  • Is this second attempt to clean my barrel going to work better?
    So, after that first attempt to clean my barrel turned out not so great, I did some more research and decided to try again. I got some new products to try and a better process in mind.
    First, thank you to all the people who gave me some tips! I ordered the products suggested and I can say that one of them worked really well!! If you see anything else I need to do better, please let me know. I think a few more times going through this process will really shine up the inside of my barrel!!
    I got some ThorroClean, Iosso bore cleaning paste, and Chameleon Gel. Also picked up some brass brushes, but I actually did not even use them this time. That might be what is going to be needed to get the last of the carbon out of the start of my barrel, right past the chamber. I still have a few black lines there for a few inches, but the rest of the way down I think it looks pretty good!
    Please let me know what you think. Is this good enough or do I need to go further and remove anything and everything that is black or copper colored? I know that a few shots are going to foul it again, so I figured this was good enough. But please, let me know what you think!
    Thank you for watching this, and thank you again to all the great commenters on the last video! The help is greatly appreciated by me! I hope you have a great rest of your day and an awesome weekend!!

    The black is carbon. You are clean enough, but you can clean that out with the Bore Tech carbon cleaner or eliminator. You can use the mop to wet it good and let it soak it for a while. Hit it with the brush after it’s softened/loosened up.
    About that muzzle brake. Take it off and clean the crown. Plus you don’t want product getting down in between the barrel and brake. When you start shooting that will turn to carbon under the heat and pressure and be a real PITA to deal with.
    You are correct that most of what you seen is shadows in the corners of the grooves.

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад

      Yeah, I figure it was good enough for now. I will do a copper step of soak and scrub, then a full carbon step to soak and scrub. I didn't do a repeat carbon soaking. I assume the first 20 shots will result in similar looking black in the barrel, so I will run it now and see how it groups. Just hope I get my good groups back after this!
      More for me to learn still. I cleaned the brake well first time. I think with the little level, I can take it on and off quicker now. So not as much of a pain in the butt to retime it when mounting.
      I thought I was seeing shadows. That is a bright light in there. Tried to turn it down and noticed the shadows not as bad, but then can't see quite as well.
      On to the next project. Test my ammo, make sure it's still doing what I want. Then get all loaded up for the last match!
      I may want to go to Dusty's and set up flags from 400 to 1000 and study how the wind is different from shooting position and down range. Need to learn how to estimate ot better by sound and feel. That is my next big topic to get learned well.
      Have a good weekend, dude! O yeah, I got your brass annealed this evening. I'll try and load it up and put in my truck tomo. I might forget when I wake up tho 🤣

    That looks a lot better. Getting the carbon out (especially by the breach end) is often the hardest part. I recently went old school and tried just plain old CLP on a bronze brush and scrubbed the living daylights out of the barrel, then followed that with a solvent soaked patch and it got a ton of black gunk out. I then repeated that until the follow-up patches came out clean. I was surprised that it worked so well, but sometimes the old school methods work just as good or better than some of the modern methods. Cleaning barrels is funny because everyone has their own method and tricks, so if you ask a dozen leople how they clean bores, you'll get a dozen different answers. 🤣

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад +1

      Yeah, I am happy with these results. I figure that little bit left is just going to appear after the first 20 or so shots. Might not be worth the time to get it out. But, I want to learn my process to do it, so I will go longer next time until I get it all!
      My friend actually stopped by last night to drop off a cover I let him borrow for his last NRL Hunter match and his brass for me to anneal. I showed him the video as I was editing it last night and he said it looks plenty good.
      So, I will start fouling and test my ammo this weekend. If still groups we'll, then load it all up and be ready for the last match in 3 weeks. I am hoping this doesn't throw my zero off, but I can correct that. Mainly, I want to see a nice, tight group after 15 or 20 fouling shots. Finally got a reason to shoot up some of the factory ammo I don't use anymore 🤣 Might as well burn it while fouling, then check my loads.
      I think that is the smart move. I guess we will see in a few days!!
      Thanks for all the tips and suggestions the last few weeks. I hope you can see how I went from terrible at cleaning to decent at getting the gunk out over these 2 weeks!! Your comments helped a lot to get me here! Thank you, Justin!!
      Have a great evening and an awesome weekend, sir!

      @ChadKelly7 , by the way, when you mentioned trying to clean without removing your brake, that's what I do (leave them on). But just watch out if you let your barrel soak for a long time because if your brake is regular carbon steel as opposed to stainless steel, you might get some corrosion depending on what ingredients are in the cleaning solution. I haven't had any issues, but I don't let chemicals soak for more than 10 minutes at a time. Once I'm all done, I spray off my brake (through the ports onto the barrel crown area) with automotive brake cleaner just to be sure no residue is left behind.

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад +1

      @DocJustinT Good point. I will show what I did to reinstall my brake. Figured out a cheat code to get it timed again, so not as much of a pain the butt. I will likely be letting stuff soak a long time, so will probably need to keep taking it off just to be safe.
      Quick cleanings, leave it on, deep cleanings take it off. Good rule of thumb!!
      I got a mini digital level. Start it at 7 degrees and it was like 8 degrees too far when tight. Next started at 15 degrees and when tight, my brake is now within .7 degrees of 0. Should be good, lol. Knowing I can start with a repeatable degree and it be level when I tighten it should make the process easier. If this holds true, I will just keep taking it off when deep cleaning.

    Hey Chad Breakthrough Clean products are great too... I heard having multiples cleaning rods helps with keeping from contamination of brushes, mops, etc... so each end piece have its own rod.... but IDK. It makes sense but that would be a lot of rods to keep attract of if you have multiples calibers... Great video and good job... let me know how those tear apart patches do...

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад +1

      I have not tried Breakthrough. I see that Academy carries it now. I might give it a try also.
      The rod I use is like 80 bucks. So, not sure I will get another one. I can change the ends. I wipe the rod down between jobs. And the cleaners I am using shouldn't be too bad to mix slightly.
      I will get another some day, just to speed up the process a little. Plus a cool carry case 🤣 I like cool gear. Found a BoreTech case that can hold 2 and that would be sweet to have. Expensive tho!!!
      I have already packed those patches in my range bag. I think they will be handy to clean the action and bolt while at the range. I will let ya know how they work. Box is cheap, hopefully the patches are not as chintzy as the box 😂
      Have a great weekend, Michael. See ya on the next one!

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад +1

      Yeah, I had taken it off to clean the first time. Soaked it over the weekend and got the bits of carbon picked off. Didn't clean it this time, but it was off. I got a little digital level to help me time it. Instead of trial and error, I tried at 7 degrees and it went too far off level when timing the brake. I think next I started at 15 degrees, and timed it pretty close. Got it to .7 degrees within perfectly level. Should be plenty good. After seeing how easy ot was to time when starting with a repeatable number displayed on a level, I will probably keep taking it off when I clean just to get everything done well. Plus, I don't want to have anything get stuck in the brake when I let product sit and work overnight. Still testing ideas and after a few more cleanings, I will get my best process figured out!
      Have a great weekend, CW! Don't drink the mercury!! 🤣🤣

    Learn something new everyday, and it's usually from Chad! 😜 I didn't realize the barrel mop was used to apply bore cleaner but rather it's your last one or two swipes with the cotton mop. 😂 Exactly why I always wondered why I would need to run the patches then last the cotton mop....it made no sense. Cuz I'd apply my bore cleaner to patches and swipe them through but this is much better as it coats the whole bore. 🤦

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад +1

      Hmm, I don't think I ever used a mop as a last step. I am sure there are other uses for it, but I got a lot of them to use in the future. I figure I will have 1 to use for each of the chemicals I plan to soak the inside of the barrel with so I don't have to reuse the same mop. To me, it feels like it can apply the product better than a patch. The patch tends to push the chemical thru and out the end. The mop is more like an applicator in my mind. Less scrubbing power, but better application power.
      This was my first time to try this idea, and it seemed to work. I will keep doing it this way until I find something better, but to me, this works well!!
      I will keep updating as I figure out better ways to do this. I will eventually learn how to make a super shiny barrel and let everyone know what I find works the absolute best!!

      I was going to try that, but found the ThorroClean while searching as well. It is made by Iosso for Bullet Central I think. I think it combines the paste and some other ingredients to be similar, but more of a thick goo instead of a paste. To me, it worked well. After this last match, I will get in there again and find a good process to remove that last bit of carbon after the chamber. I figure I am just going to foul it again today after 10 to 15 shots, so not gonna stress that too much now. Hoping that my ammo still groups well thru a clean barrel 🤣 Going to test today and find out. I may need to drop my powder a tenth or so to get back to the speed that seemed to group the best. I don't know, but after testing today I should!! Just trying to get as many things in top shape for my last match. I want to finish this season with good results!
      Erik Cortina has been a big inspiration to me. I see his results and try to do what I can to emulate him, but I know I will never be on his level. Maybe someday I can make the drive down to him place and give the Blackjack challenge a go!! That is on my list for this year. Should be good fun. Trying to find some small plates to build a practice KYL rack I can test myself on before driving 8 hours to shoot his, though 😂
      If you get a chance, I can say the ThorroClean gave me good results. I would recommend giving it a try someday! I will likely try the Iosso or JB paste next.

I have not tried any of the Kroil products. Let me know which is the one you like, please. I looked over their stuff on a few sites, not sure which would work best for what I'm trying to accomplish here. I'd say your barrel is still dirty. Having said that, to my dismay, I've found that my barrel shoots much worse if I try to get it spotless.

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад

      Yeah, I think by the standard of Erik Cortina and pros like that, they get every speck out. But, then I think that the fouling shots are going to put similar carbon there in the first few inches, so for me and my skills I am going to run it.
      Plan to foul with some factory ammo I have left to get some use out of those rounds, then see if my handloads group as well (hopefully better) than they were. If all looks good, get my next match's worth loaded up and be ready to go!!
      Figure I won't clean any more until after the match. Get it fouled and keep going with it!
      I hope it shoots slightly better than very dirty. As long as not worse, I will be pleased.
      Always more to learn in this I find.
      Thanks for watching and have a great weekend, Randy!!
