How JetBlue Is Challenging American, United and Delta

  • In just two decades, JetBlue Airways became a major mainstream player in the U.S. airline industry. But in 2018, its shares plummeted. To keep up in the big leagues, JetBlue is aggressively trying to raise revenue and keep a lid on costs.
    JetBlue Airways is looking more like its bigger competitors these days.
    Plans for the New York-based airline were unveiled in February 1999. JetBlue took its first flight in the winter of 2000, vowing to "bring humanity back to air travel." Now entering its third decade, it is adopting measures used by some more established airlines to drum up revenue and please skeptical investors as its stock price struggles. Increasing baggage fees? Check. Plans for a no-frills coach service? Check. Chasing those lucrative business travelers? Check. Slimming down corporate-office ranks? Check.
    JetBlue's challenge is holding onto its quirky culture and succeeding at airlines' tough balancing act: keeping investors and passengers happy.
    "We're exiting that awkward teenage stage and becoming adults," said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlue's president and COO.
    Despite updates like new planes and cabins, JetBlue wants to hold onto its customer-focused approach that won it a loyal following.
    "Customers expect good service, and when they don't get it, they're vocal about it," said Geraghty.
    Armed with a fleet of brand-new Airbus jets, each outfitted with leather seats and individual screens offering satellite television, JetBlue was the brainchild of serial airline entrepreneur David Neeleman. He'splanning to launch a new U.S. airline.
    JetBlue took its first flight on Feb. 11, 2000, from New York's John F. Kennedy International. The carrier's bet on JFK was a gamble on whether travelers would trek out to an airport more known for international service than for short- and medium-haul flights.
    "The joke was you could bowl down the runway," said Mark Ahasic, who joined JetBlue a month after its first flight and stayed on for more than six years helping to plan flights and run operations.

    The Dominican Republic made JetBlue into the top competitor airline it is nowadays. JetBlue was the first airline to travel into the new Cibao International Airport of Santiago, Dominican Republic in 2001. This was a game changer because Santiago is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic and the fifth largest in the Caribbean, and there was no airline traveling into this city from the United States. The airline started providing 5 daily flights to and from JFK/STI and the flights were packed! JetBlue saw the importance of the Dominicans living in New York City, which is the largest immigrant group, and started providing flights to Santo Domingo, La Romana, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and even Samana. Adding their main gate in Santiago, this was a major revenue provider since Dominicans love to fly back home at any time of the year. Now JetBlue provides flights to/from Dominican Republic to Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Newark, Orlando and San Juan, Puerto Rico which are home to large Dominican communities. With the horrible service and expensive airline tickets provided by American Airlines, to/from Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo only, JetBlue changed the game and made is a respected airline.

    JetBlue is wonderful airline, the best in the U.S.A but there are serious areas that need improvement:
    1) Better flight scheduling: To enable more connecting from major markets through there focus cities. Like from Houston to Ft Lauderdale via NYC which doesn't exist due to flight scheduling.
    2) Fix there buggy mobile app: Its fussy to book a flight the app and crashes quite frequently compare to other airline apps.
    3) Compete better in major markets. Jetblue is a unique airline that offers most amenities than any major carrier for the price. Markets like Houston where United and Southwest are the most dominate but lack in service amenities and fares tend to be quite high due lack of competition. Jetblue can compete and should like they do in Austin.

The snack options were great along with the entire can of soda. That matters lol. And the live TV was the best part. Oh and our flights were on time both ways. After jetblue stopped allowing a free checked bag, I stopped flying them. Now my thought process is: do I need to fly with a checked bag? If so, go southwest. If not, go wherever is cheapest.
    I do not believe jetblue's "better service" means anything substantial anymore.

    The real truth about Jet Blue, David Neeleman did lowered prices he like profit share, with organizing the workers to meet workers situation.
    Even young man was all for JetBlue and for the workers. The management didn't like what was going on they didn't care about the employees of JetBlue they were about more competition profit sharing trying to get the money. The executives we're pretty much Staffing the employers and employees were pretty much out there outside at the airport doing work and a very strict and harsh environment.
    David Neeleman came to the board and spoke to everybody and said hey you guys want profit-share that's fine if you guys want probably share at the employee's comes first because they do all the heavy lifting they do all the work.
    Also when the Border directions chairman decide cuz they have the majority vote they booted out David Neeleman. So when the original owner of the JetBlue was booted out by force of share structure. JetBlue sales in the client's and everything went forward. They never charged every nickel and dime for every customer they started to fee on bags checking's and luggages onboard luggages. The original CEO never did that to the people, that is not true to what CNBC is saying. The original CEO May JetBlue a great atmosphere for workers from many other individuals.
    How I know this as a shareholder and also as an individual who buys and sell the stock buy as well as from many other friends who worked at JetBlue under David Neeleman. That's how I know that the original CEO was a great man to work with and do business with. Now JetBlue is at their own issue their own problem for over hiking the price for everything that's their problem and they did that so I blame JetBlue now but the original CEO has another Jetline and it's way better.

      After being ousted from JetBlue David Neeleman went off to Brazil and founded “Azul” (which is blue, in Portuguese), and it follows the same principles of the customer satisfaction and crew happiness that made JetBlue so successful once, it’s currently the third biggest airline in Brazil and the only one that consistently reports a profit every time.

    All airlines in the west need to step up their game and start paying the pilots more. It was surprising to know that I will make as much as a pilot in my labor job that required no experience. Pilots in China make more than pilots in the west. There's going to be less and less pilots in the west over time because they simply don't get paid enough. It's very expensive to get your license to fly and takes a long time to even work for an airline. Imagine still having to pay off loans when you're 40 or 50 and retirement is not far away? meanwhile a pilot in china will have their debt paid off by 30. PAY PILOTS MORE AIRLINES

    • @andrewenriquez3138
      @andrewenriquez3138 5 лет назад +7

      I'd take a look at thepayscale. They've gone up quite a bit in the last 5 years because no one is going to go 150k in debt for 20k a year before taxes. Nowadays most pilots pay starts at about 40k a year with a 20k sign on bonus and within 10 years the average captain is making about 130k a year and after 20 years the senior captains are making over 200k a year

    • @kevshorty
      @kevshorty 5 лет назад

      Andrew Enriquez yes but in order to get that pay you need a certain amount of hours of flight time per week. The airline doesn't care about the delays or how much connection flights they must do in order to get the quota. Only senior pilots get it easy in choosing long flights going overseas and back. I do like Airlines offering a significant discount in flight schools as long as they work for them. They still have a long way to go

    JetBlue has grown up to becoming a bully. Jetblue out of all the airliners finished last place 2019! Jetblue in 2018 7th place! Main stream JetBlue needs to remember how they got to where they are today. There CEO is from British airways. He's is making JetBlue Airways into a money making Airlines. But the Jetblue stock has not showing any growth. Where is the money going? Cost cutting to save money .This should not cut the service in witch JetBlue is known for. JetBlue is getting worse every year. I fly Jetblue . I am starting to feel like Jetblue has forgotten and remembering how JetBlue got to where they are today. Great service minded people. I see a bad change in how I am treated when flying on my trips. There is now a hands off don't tuch.The workers are not happy and it's shows. The feeling is is a fake happy. The ground service is not the same. The past 3 years has bin so many changes it heard to keep up with JetBlue. I fly Norwegian Air. JetBlue is Just like them . Charging for everything. JetBlue is starting to do the same. Its only time till JetBlue starts to charge for the snacks. Carry on bags. Jetblue is getting less and less on everything. JetBlue Cutting to save money is one thing. But taking away from the service in not making anyone happy. It's only time till JetBlue becomes another British Airways. Sad to say We need another airline to start up to make a point. This may be the only way to save JetBlue to understand they are going in the wrong dedication. All the best #mikemerone on RUclips.

    Jet Blue -
    Please do these two things:
    Seat the plane from the back first. Walking over people to board is awkward for me and them.
    Analyze foot traffic in the terminal and try organizing the staging and boarding areas to stage inside the seating area (try seating by zone in staging). Skip the lines moving into the terminal pedestrian walkway during boarding and make things really flow correctly.
    The flights themselves are great but the boarding procedure is counterintuitive and slow.

    • @Meowmeow-lj4sv

      They used to do back to front. It was great, but boarding was a little slower due to many variables on how people boarded the flight. The new boarding process that they have is actually speedier. The idea is to board window to aisle seat, which spreads the traffic out a little bit better.
