Though I can't defend everything on the album as Quality (Homecoming, Governator and Whatsername anyone? And seriously who asked for Holiday? It's thanking its lucky ass Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the song that follows it up) It still holds up amazingly well with lyrics off of the title track that hold horrifyingly true nearly 2 decades later.

Over-compressed “loudness-war” era production which saps all dynamics, too many hammy pop rock ballads, lyrics that don’t exactly cut that deep if you were listening to actual radical anarcho punk and crust during the same era it came out, and just lacks a lot of the natural energy, plain sincerity, and playful vibe of the albums that Greed Day put out in the 90s.

All lyrics were written in the studio and then recorded and he said it was an awful experience and that he would never do that again. Abbey Road over Sgt. Pepper is fair. It has a fuller sound and better flow. Each song on side A is a staple in their discography. Side B is the perfectly coordinated capstone on their career. Sgt. Peppers has some great songs and is maybe more influential in music history, but Abbey Road is the more consistent album.
I definitely agree with the last sentence. Never considered Abbey road to be my favourite of The Beatles albums, but it's all killer no filler, and because how diverse it is it really works as a crown jewel at the end of their discography.

Awaken my love does not have more bops. It's better as a whole project but there are way more individual tracks on bti that slap. If I listen to awaken my love it's a whole album playthrough. Oakland, 3005, flight of the navigator, pink toes, sweatpants and the worst guys. The only real standout songs on awaken my love is redbone and me and your mama.
American Idiot is Green Day's most popular record while not even being in their top 6 records. Their first 6 were all much better for a punk band, even their first has surprising folk energy similar to some of the later Mischief Brew songs. The acoustic version of One for the Razorbacks is peak Folk Punk, and Nimrod and Warning took it to the next level after they did more traditional punk albums
I feel like American idiot was not trying to be a straight up punk album. It was more Green Day trying to tell a story through what they thought would fit.

Dookie, the songs are just so much better and Green Day really felt like they weren't selling out, feeling more rebellious and everything... But it's really fucking hard to pick that over American Idiot, given all the sentimental value I have towards that, me and my friends used to jam out and listen to it a lot, I still remember the big road trip my best friend and I went on where we listened to it in full like, twice just in that day alone, then a couple other times before I went to college and she moved away.

Awaken my love does not have more bops. It's better as a whole project but there are way more individual tracks on bti that slap. If I listen to awaken my love it's a whole album playthrough. Oakland, 3005, flight of the navigator, pink toes, sweatpants and the worst guys. The only real standout songs on awaken my love is redbone and me and your mama.

American Idiot is Green Day's most popular record while not even being in their top 6 records. Their first 6 were all much better for a punk band, even their first has surprising folk energy similar to some of the later Mischief Brew songs. The acoustic version of One for the Razorbacks is peak Folk Punk, and Nimrod and Warning took it to the next level after they did more traditional punk albums
I feel like American idiot was not trying to be a straight up punk album. It was more Green Day trying to tell a story through what they thought would fit.
I’m pretty sure American Idiot was original written to be a rock opera.
