I originally filmed this as a vlog, but because of the wind I wasn't able to talk very much, and when I tried to use my good camera, I couldn't even get it to turn on because of the -10 degree temperature. So, I decided to cut all the parts where I was vlogging to camera, and mute most of the audio and narrate over the footage instead. I think it was the best way to still be able to share this footage. But- if you're interested in seeing the original VLOG, which also isn't too bad, it's up on my Patreon for my supporters... www.patreon.com/GoNorthJapan
Incredible! I was stationed at Misawa for three years in the mid-90s, and this was my playground. We did multi-nighters in winter, slept in the huts, and summited all of the peaks. Every trip ended with a bath, beer and a meal at Sukayu. I have some grainy footage posted on my channel from those amazing times. Thanks for sharing!
I had to wait a few days before watching this video and, the first time I wasn't even able to see it, just to listen. I could only imagine; first the beauty you spoke about and then the drama of those soldiers stranded in the night, in the snow, the cold the wind... such a difference in moods, all in your soothing voice Quinlan. I arrived at my home, late in the night as I usually work the night shift in my restaurant, and the first thing I did was sit down and watch this Hakkoda's Snow Monsters. The beauty inside was more than what I imagined and it literally stole my breath. I could not even think, just admire these glorious landscapes shaped by the mountain, the wind and the snow. The white to the end of the horizon, the sun upon it and the blue sky on top. What wonderful world we live in! No wonder you and all others smile like that, that is beauty fit to elevate you. What gift you give us Quinlan. I could never thank you enough for this. But even so, thank you for being there and for sharing this with us.
Thank you for taking us along with you on your hike! I don't think I'll ever be inclined to hike with so much snow/in such cold conditions, so I enjoyed watching yours. :)
What a stunning collection of shots in this video! Your videography is beautiful and the landscape stunning. Your narration of the Hakkoda disaster was powerful too. Looking as beautiful as they do in good conditions, it seems almost easy to forget that the mountains also have an ara-mitama that you don't want to mess with. I absolutely love the snow monsters and I really hope I'll be able to see them in person one day, I still can't wrap my head around how those trees survive being encased in snow and ice that way! Thanks again Quinlan for adding a massive dose of beauty by taking us along with you to these gorgeous places.
Thanks so much! And yeah- on clear calm days the winter mountains feel so peaceful, but they can quickly change into a deathtrap if you're not careful. (So I'm generally pretty strict about not going into the mountains during the winter if there's anything fierce forecast!) Hope you get to come see the snow monsters some year soon!
Hi Quinlan, this was a great video to watch first thing this Sunday morning, so relaxing to see the stunning scenery. Loved the seeing the transition from when you passed through the cloud level on your way down. Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone. Best wishes and safe travels 🏴🇺🇸🇯🇵
Wow, just wow. What a spectacular day on the hill. I loved the area in the late summer/early fall, and now I'm pretty sure I have to come back with my snowshoes for the winter! Thanks for these videos - your photography and soothing narrations are exceptionally relaxing.
i love small hikes and this 700m elevation gain is something i would normally do but in snow i wouldnt dare to do it alone :D Wish we had some snowy mountains down in kansai as well. Tohoku is so pretty.
Thanks Quinlan. Even as a ghost-sceptic _I do like_ to hear about scary bits like the legends about the souls of all those poor dead soldiers haunting those gullies around Mt Hakoda 👻😬 You hadn't done this in a while, I love it when you finish a vlog about a particularly scenic hike with drone footage. It's like a sudden adrenaline shot to the system... 🙇♂
I'm with you on being ghost-skeptical, but also yeah- ghost stories and dark histories are great. And so glad you like the drone footage! I'll have to keep that up!
such a sad tale but such a beautiful landscape. Foolish to go without a local guide, but sadly not suprising either. Ah this was lovely. Time to finally have dinner though. I have been wondering whilst watching though: Did you ever figure out a solution for your frost-bite batteries?
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 just didn't seem to function in those conditions, but the GoPro is still fine. So my solution is just to use only the GoPro when it gets really cold...
sorry i am back with another comment. This time I saw the other vlog-version before and just to add: yes I definately like it better with a bit of music in the background I think :) and of cousre the story makes it very interessting. Of course all this is more work but seeing the vids back to back really shows which I'd prefer XD
Yeah, climate change is definitely messing stuff up here. It's warm and raining today, the snow monsters are basically destroyed now I think, and it's mid-February. They should be at their peak.

Nice!! That sounds epic!!
They look like tempura shrimp to me 😋 Just gorgeous! And you are the BEST storyteller! Very sad story today, but thank you for sharing.
So glad you liked the video! Thanks so much!!
Always impressed by how beautiful our planet can be
Indeed!

New goal: winter hiking. Thank you for showing us such a gorgeous scenery!

Thanks!
Thank you so much!! That means a lot!
this channel always helps me calm down and chill
Glad to hear that!
Such a tragic story about the soldiers! But, oh, the serenity of those snowy mountain vistas. Such a contrast. Thank you for sharing this!
Hope it wasn't too dark! I just thought I should share the history since I was there.
@@GoNorthJapan No, indeed. Tragic but also fascinating and instructive. The stories and history you impart are always appreciated!
Takk!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate that!!

Glad to take you places that you wouldn't go otherwise!
It really does look like a winter wonderland. I like how you can see from which direction the snow/ice grows on those bigger rocks.
Yeah, easy to see the general wind direction!
that drone shot at 5:50 is absolutely beautiful
Thanks! It is such a beautiful landscape!

There are a lot of great aspects you can only see in the winter! Definitely worth returning!
What stunning views! And such a sad, tragic story. Be safe out there!
Thanks! Definitely always staying safe!
Oh my gosh the storytelling! I got goosebumps 😮
Glad you liked it!
Beautiful terrain. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Thanks for watching!
Your videos are always so beautiful and so full of historical information. Thanks!
So glad you like them!!
Stunning, and your drone footage is always on point!
Hey thanks!
Just stunning views in this video, truly enriching to watch
Hey thanks! I was really impressed with your editing and storytelling as well! Can't wait to see where you go from here!
@@GoNorthJapan well im flattered and humbled to hear that coming from you! thanks!
This video turned out to be very beautiful despite your weather challenges.
Yes, it was a bit windy, but basically a great day!
It's almost alien to me, all that whiteness of the fluffy snow and the sky. Most incredible.
Love love love it!
So beautiful up there! I'd do the same (showshoeing) but I proved during a recent snowstorm that my Camry was not made for that kind of weather.
Nice video, love your story telling, thanks!
Thanks!
Stunning ❤ Hope to visit one day!
Yes! Definitely worth visiting!

Beautiful!
Lovely relaxing voice too

What a wonderful place 😊 im saving the next year or two for a two week Trip to Japan. I will def visit the north for a week. You hooked me 😂
So glad to hear that!
Beautiful! Is it also possible/allowed to ski down?
Yes! Absolutely! I was in snowshoes that day, but more than half of the others I saw were in skis!
IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE IN ANOTHER PLANET. SO PEACEFUL.
Yeah, never get tired of this landscape!
Marry me!
Marry me bro
Is climate change messing stuff up by you. No longer snows by me sadly
