- Suella Braverman today declared that no one who arrives in Britain by small boat is "fleeing imminent peril" and none have a "good cause" for being let in.
In a major speech in Washington DC, the Home Secretary called on world leaders to rip up the 1951 UN Refugee Convention.
She said global asylum rules are out of date and have expanded over time to facilitate illegal migrants "shopping around" for their country of choice.
Ms Braverman praised the UN Refugee Convention as an "incredible achievement of its age".
But she caveated that "we now live in a completely different time".
She said: "It is incumbent upon politicians and thought leaders to ask whether the Refugee Convention, and the way it has come to be interpreted through our courts, is fit for our modern age or in need of reform.
"The status quo, where people are able to travel through multiple safe countries, and even reside in safe countries for years, while they pick their preferred destination to claim asylum, is absurd and unsustainable."

Don’t hold your breath all she is doing is manoeuvring to take the top Tory job after they get trounced in the elections.
That's what she is doing in this situation. She is not allowing people to come because they are gay. But people like you need to get into your head is they are taking action on every issue but yet the courts keep stopping them and so is the home office! It's called the blob and it's literally stopping democracy from happening and the politicians we voted for introducing what we want!
She says all this while changing nothing and presiding over the highest amount of immigration ever. Handing out a million plus visas to Nigerians and those from Muslim countries every year. They are allowing triple the number of Nigerians than we ever had EU citizens. They want us to focus on their pretence at being against the boat migrants while flooding us with migrants everywhere else. No surprise coming from the "diversity governmemt." Look at their actions not their rhetoric.

Clearly you don't understand! "Cheering the backlog" means letting tens of thousands of new undocumented migrants into the country! They and (she) have been trying to find other ways of getting rid of them but thanks to the legal obstacle course created by Tony Blair 20 years ago it's almost impossible! But her and Sunak did pass a piece of legislation to get rid of the "temporary 300 day visa" that Johnson brought in that was basically a loophole for non asylum seekers to gain residency!

Asylum needs stopping full stop. Any genuine asylum seeker would seek refuge in the first safe country, not one thousands of miles away and numerous safe countries away. It's a system that is completely abused now and it needs to stop.
No they are not Asylum seekers at all. As you said it's actually law that they seek refuge in the nearest neighbouring country that is safe. But also the fact they are in France, a safe country with no war or natural disasters... They are no longer refugees. But the whole "asylum seeker thing is just a loophole to get them into the country and to push as Propaganda in the media. Most are coming from Albania and Asian countries like Vietnam and being exploited for cheap labour and to undercut the British worker. That's what it's all about.

The immigration system is on its knees because of 13 years of underfunding. Now they've decided its easier to pay £8 a day to their donors who own hotels then fix the issue.

After the Vietnam war many thousands of peoplle left Vietnam because they knew they would automatically be resettled, many of these people were not real refugees in danger of persecution, they were economic migrants. Eventually the UN had to step in and judge people on a case by case basis.

@@aigeneratedwauigi2696 if a woman or person of lgbtq is fleeing and regardless of their reason, if they statistically pose higher risk of unfortunate circumstances the longer they remain in their country, then within that group they should be prioritised. E.g woman wants to migrate because there is no work in her country. Bottom of the list. Woman is also from a country where it’s hard for woman to find work. Higher priority within the bottom list. Or orrrrr… Man wants to migrate because of whatever not so urgent reason I don’t know, man is also gay and lives within a homophobic country. Higher priority within the bottom list. Seems fair to me!
