I was there too. I remember my brother had a single record and on one side was “Over the rainbow” and the other side was “I told the brook”. Which I think was the better of the two. Then I blossomed in the 70’s and fell in love with his music. I think his finest work was “The gangster of love”. Which I think went for 20 minutes. To this day he was my favourite Australian singer.
He learned his guitar skills off a true legend lobby loyd
This was like the Winwood/Traffic offering from Australia. As A Brit I can honestly say Thorpe sings every bit as well as Daltrey, Steve Marriott or Greg Lake. The world in the late-60's/early 70's simply wasn't ready for music like this from down under competing with the U.S./UK artists. What a conniving shame. As much as I love the early Bee Gees stuff. There simply is no comparison to the soulfulness and thorough musicality of what Thorpe was doing then.
Billy really shows his vocal powers here
How basic were the shows back then with the cramped conditions
The roadies did a great job
That Melbourne town hall organ made a statement
Billy at his best in 71
I was there that night and what a great night it was , RIP , GREAT MAN !!
It's just amazing to me that Billy wasn't a huge word star, his vocals and guitar skills were supreme.
I've just caught a brief glimpse of myself for a few seconds behind the speakers.
What a surprise. After all these years!
I knew Billy back in the late 60s and early 70s when I used to hang around with Jerry Humphrys and Claire. I remember the time Billy took me home when I got dead drunk at Q Club and the sad day that someone stoile Lobby Loyde's Gibson guitar 'George'.
I have Mama on the Live from the Melbourne Town Hall LP, the last album I bought two days before leaving Oz forever. I was there on the stage behind one of the speaker boxes making sure that those large plastic balloons kept inflated.
You didn't happen to see him in 'Jan '68 with The Who, Small Faces etc?
Denis Darmanin - Many thanks for your memories! :) I've also been around the Oz music scene (although now in Scotland) for many years :)
Loved Billy, never missed a gig in Sydney. Loved Jerry too, what a voice!
Good times back then. I was at the Sydney Town Hall gig a week after this was filmed. Poor Pig wasn't allowed to play the Organ in Sydney, due to blowing the windows out in Melbourne at this gig. 😅 I so wanted to hear Pig play that organ too.
Talent like this is rarely seen these days, such a shame he was so unacknowledged by the rest of the world. RIP Billy.
This song is something that speaks to my soul and and he sings it to a tee!❤️RIP OUR BELOVED BILLY THORPE
WHY DO WE LOSE THE GREATEST
My favourite Aztecs song and one of the greatest rock vocals of all time IMHO. Sends shivers down my spine, every time I hear it and the opening feedback note from Billy's Les Paul on Time To Live is magic. RIP Billy.
Yep
SIMPLY 1 OF OUR GREATEST EVER🚶♂️🎶
Still listening to in April 2024
Should be Australia's National Anthem. His voice is a killer. His hair in platts is crazy. The guitar weeps like a child. The guy is the epitome of what is a real Australian. Such power.
The best live performance ever
This sounds heavy as F*ck!
Billy had a thunderous voice, and what a powerhouse band The Aztecs were.
Took my girlfriend to the concert, recall everyone standing on the seats causing a bit of damage. Great, great concert with multiple Aussie bands including Daddy Cool etc. Got on the tram outside and couldn't hear anything at all except a ringing in my ears for 2 days! Loudest concert I can remember. The AZTECS were at their peak at this time in my view. What a concert! What an experience then for, and now from my youth! What a memory to take to my grave! Real music...
+Tony Wethereld - weren't you supposed to be in Vietnam
@@Blackscorpion1963 The concert was in 1971 so I was only 15yo so (thankfully) didn't have to go to Vietnam.
My brother in law and I saw him at the Palace at probably one of his last concerts in Oz
Probs 5 feet back back from the stage
Faaaaaarrkk
Driving home down Punt rd , we couldn't talk to each other because our ears were ringing
I was at the Sydney Town Hall performance of this concert a couple of weeks later. Pig got a bit more time on the organ Magic, except I had to put in a midnight shift after the concert finished.
I'm glad I grew up in that era. So many great muso's and bands.
The greatest live performances ever rip
HEAVY!

Billy Thorpe bassist , he’s legendary he set the bench mark for the idea of the bass player I am gonna be one day ... I play guitar I have always loved to see him playing his Fender Jazz Bass head banging his head on the beat ... that’s a legendary band indeed , great influence on me for sure and great influence in the Australian Rock’n’Roll that came after Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs , he did well in USA as well with his film work . When I hear a band that gives goosebumps on my legs and back I know they are something else .
I think you speak of John Robinson:, and there is a strong resemblance to Paul Wheeler, who I believe is playing bass here. Curiously there was also a later different Paul Wheeler played for Blackfeather, but he was a drummer. Thorpie had many fine bass players, not the least of whom is Gil Matthews (rat) who is playing drums here.
@@gerringongmusicstevesparke6152 John Robinson also played in Blackfeather, but then as lead guitar. (check out Mango's Theme live on YT)
Best version of Time To Live. Bought The Dawn Song single just to get Time To Live. Of course got the Live At Melbourne Town hall a bit later. Killer song. Amazing harmonics in this version. Saw Aztecs as much as I could from around '74 to '76. Volume! Long Live Rock N Roll!
I so miss that beautiful voice!
Now this is much better music from Thorpie and the boys. On 'Somebody Left Me Crying', Warren Morgan was able to utilize Melbourne Town Hall's pipe organ. Brilliant.
His best song.
My favourite Thorpey song by miles and I told him that once. What a voice.
One word: "WOW!"
What a difference from the image of 1964, just 7 years earlier.
So much groundbreaking music.
i always wondered how he grew his hair that fast
..when kings walked the earth
Just OZ rock loyalty.
Fucking legends. ❤❤❤❤❤
Just found this omg i remember it now so clear i was there that nite it was frigin awesome and so memorable i went with 5 hot young ladies one my girl friend daddy cool played as well it went off just wild people danced on the chairs frigging mind blowing
+ Stephen Shrubsall - weren't you supposed to be in Vietnam
I was there. Gil perfect as always.
Just the most incredible drummer! Loved this line up.
Great stuff!!! :)
Playing this for my bro. Huge treat- & some of this sounds like Neil young's dangerbird.
Aries Gemini Pisces I hear it too! Good call.
Warren Morgan on the Town Hall organ - awesome
Thorpie.........LEGEND!
simply awesome
Scantily remembered Aztec classic
Tiempos 👍
Great Music.
I wonder if Jimmy Barnes ever heard Billy sing growing up.
Awesome Thorpe!
1 Heavy Number!!!
I've got the triple CD 'Lock Up Your Mothers" set with this on it. Don't think I've ever seen this video before, Pig Morgan's bum organ notes are edited out and it's a shorter version of Somebody. I met Billy about 10 years ago and told him this was my favourite Aztecs song and he was surprised, he expected me to say Most People I Know... RIP Billy, you were amazing.
rock MONSTER
