- June Huh won the 2019 the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics. Here he delves deeply and articulately into the beauty of mathematics, the pure joy this brings, and whether math is created or a vast structure waiting to be discovered.
Congrats to Huh on the Field Medal award!!!
huh??

As a pure and applied math major and future mathematician, I really look up to Dr Huh. He has one of the greatest underdog stories in Mathematics from not being good at it to becoming a Fields medallist
The way he express his passion and his feelings for mathematics is beautiful.
He inspired me.
i wish i could be like this guy. i tried, but i'm not
You are unique.
Nobody is cat-head

Congratulations Prof. Huh for winning the Fields Medal! You are an incredible inspiration, and what you are saying about the beauty of things that we discover or create is very humble and motivating!
Thank you June Huh, you're a great inspiration and I admire you.
허준이씨는 놀랍도록 풍부한 수학적 모델세계가 있음.
Wow. He perfectly explained exactly why I believe mathematics is the process of discovery of structures that are intrinsic to the universe rather than a completely human concept. The structure beneath could probably be represented in many other ways other than the mathematics humans have but I really feel that maths is in some way entwined in the fabric of reality itself and our current understanding is a small glimpse into that. If we ever discover other intelligent life, I would be most interested in seeing their version of maths
He is my inspiration
Yeah…man is in love.
What motivates us is … beauty. 100% agree
Quick Answer : A Psychedelic Experience would suffice .
undoubtedly, he is definitely a poet because he always use many analogies on what is the math of beauty. Posssibly, he is an unique and special mathematician among math field. Unfourtunately,i am also this kind of species. I mean that i am a poetic person.
poetry in numbers, joy in mathematics
Beutiful soul..
I am glad he lets his passion for mathematical beauty flow out of him naturally without pretension.
He is a lovely communicator.
my idol
I am very inspired by june huh
Beautiful guy
The pursuit of beauty
What on earth is this guy talking about hahaha
I’m sure you have seen beauty in some level of detail of something that most people dismiss, don’t care about, or can’t see. That’s what he is talking about. Everyone knows this feeling in one way or another.
Never makes me go "Huh"
❤
Jun on math sounds nice
I'm with him!
profundity it is
Thanks .
You can find interesting connections and patterns in many things. With something like mathematics, there are infinite combinations, so it' not surprising that there's a huge realm in which we make interesting connections. And mathematicians only focus on the numbers and theorems that have patterns, ignoring the infinitely many that don't. So it might be a selection bias among mathematicians, as they only concern themselves with numbers or theorems that have some pattern or special significance. Math is also similar to language or the alphabet, where out of a combination of 27 letters we can construct infinitely many ideas. I don't think that means there's something sacred or mystical about language itself, it's just a tool. So I don't know if math is much more than that.
It would be selection bias if the connection he’s talking about is trivial. But these connections are highly non-trivial and surprising.
I also thought same. Then the videos of complex number totally changed by view. It may feel at begining that we are inventing new number but when we learn its properties it is just the missing piece of number system. Even we try to avoid it just arises like in Scordingers Equation. Its like we have discovered math.

If any Korean person sees this, how hard is to get itno SNU into the program June Huh got into? In the quanta magazine article about him theh said he was disinterested in studies and "dropped out" of high school but he went to SNU? Isn't it a too Korean university which is hard to get into?
SNU is the top school in Korea and extremely difficult to get into.
Yes, he dropped out of high school but it is not true he was not interested in study. He wanted to become a poet and to focus on it. That’s why he dropped out of school.
He said he was shocked that there are so many students smarter than him in SNU. I believe he really feel that way because SNU has been where many talanted students in Korea are gathering.
Fields medal should be cancled or at least adjusted, to those who do real contributions to math, no need every 4 years, like a olympaid game, no meaning.
This man inspires me to breath and live
