So true. I think Clift went downhill after failing to win. He had also been nominated two times previously in the Search and Place in the Sun. Lancaster was completely intimidated by Clifts acting and Holden said Clift should have won. Brilliant actor who destroyed himself and left us far too early. Sadly he is forgotten today except by intelligent film fans.
Agree- I think he and Lancaster split votes. Love Holden and believe he deserved an Oscar for "Sunset Boulevard," but Clift was at a peak in "Eternity" and went very deep into the character of Prewitt.

I love Mr. Holden's acceptance speech, I wish they could all be like that, heartfelt, short and sweet. He did an incredible acting job (making it look not like a job) in Stalag 17. His entire performance was stellar and because of him, I have watched the movie about 10 times these last few months, there is one scene, a short one, where it would be virtually impossible for anyone to do it better, it was perfection personified.

Thomas Headley, I saw him on the "I Love Lucy" Episode. I have seen all of William Holden's Movies. Regarding "Love is a Many Splendored Thing," he and his Co- Star, Jennifer Jones, had ZERO Chemistry. He wanted Audrey Hepburn as his Co-Star. I would have liked the Movie a lot more, if Audrey Hepburn had been his Co- Star. William Holden and Audrey Hepburn, have Great Chemistry, e.g., such as in The Movie, "Sabrina."

No he wasn't. Stalag 17 was his baby and he knocked it outta the park with a commanding performance. As good as he was in Sunset and Network, those films were ruled by Gloria Swanson's unforgettable character and Paul Scofield's towering lunatic performance. Oscar got it right on all counts this time.

Shirley Booth is dressed for her newest play, "The Matchmaker', which was a big success and became..."Hello Dolly!!" Thought I'd throw that in. Like Holden, but Monty Clift playing the horn after his buddy is killed...perfection.
Allegedly they were running short on time so Holden was given the bum's rush, hence his brief speech. Watch Grace Kelly's clip where he says "Time is running short again." He handled it with grace though. And so handsome!
I believe Clift and Lancaster split the vote giving Holden the win. Its fine by me. Holden makes the film. He should have won for Sunset Boulevard instead of Jose Ferrer in a very hammy role Cyrano de Bergerac.
Most undervalued actor in Hollywood history (well, almost. There are others as well). Maybe because he was handsome? But Stalag 17 has been one of my favourite movies since I was a child and he is great there as he was in SB. He got it this time probably because Lancaster and Clift took votes from each other. But he was better than both anyway and FHTE is not even half as good as Stalag 17.

Great actor, great film. Maybe if all the winners reverted back to a simple "thank you" in accepting the Oscar, the modern Oscar shows wouldn't be such a drag-out for 3 hours and get it all done in a respectable 1 and a half hours tops.
The reason he only said Thank You is because the broadcast was running late and Donald O’Conner told him to “take the thing and get off”. Always bothered him that he was able to thank those he felt indebted to.
I th hink everyone in Hollywood, including Holden himself, knew that the real winner should have been Clift. I remember reading something about it years ago--that the Academy felt that it owed Mr. Holden an Oscar for some such reason. But what was really riveting for me in this video was Shirley Booth. What a graciious, calm presence she had. And what an amazing actress she was. The U.S. film instrustry doesn't produce actors of her caliber any more.
Agreed. Eternity cannot win Best Picture without Montgomery Clift. He was the heart and soul of that picture. It haunted him the rest of his career, he really wanted it for that picture. All the other actors some winning and claiming Clift was the one that inspired them. Travesty.

William holden should have at least got nominated for the wild bunch 1969,clift and Lancaster got nominated for best actor in the same film thus leaving the way for holden to win.never did care for any of brandos films except viva Zapata 1952 and one eyed jacks 1961.
This was obviously a consolation prize for them not giving him the Oscar for Sunset Boulevard. Montgomery Clift should have won this award, which Holden even said himself, him or Burt Lancaster.
His biography explains that the show was running over and he was only allowed to say "Thank you". He had a speech prepared in which he was going to thank his wife, parents, and director.

Did you know Bill Holden & his wife thought that it was given to him for the previous year when he was truly snubbed as he was the best in Sunset Boulevard. I think that year it was given to Gregory Peck for political reason. Peck was certainly a star but hardly could act specially at the caliber of Bill Holden. David Lean once said that Bill Holden was the best & most intense actor he had directed. David had directed Alec Guinness, Peter O’Toole, Antony Quinn, Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger, Richard Burton, & Robert Mitchum. His films, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan’s Daughter, Bridge Over River Kwaii, Brief Encounter, etc.
peck won in 1962 or 03 for to kill mocking bird. holden did not loose to peck in 1950 for Sunset Blvd. holden was more talented sure but i will not say peck could not act. his role in to kill a mocking bird is seen today as one of the best performances by an actor ever.

Take Humphrey Bogart for example, an ugly, short guy with terrible voice who could not act but a superstar nevertheless. Only in the USA with no talent you could reach stardom & wealth.
A heartbreaking tidbit: After the ceremony, Holden's high on winning the Oscar was punctured by his own wife, who told him that he didn't really win for Stalag 17, but as a make-up award for Sunset Boulevard two years earlier. It has also been argued that Holden may have had the advantage that Montgomery Clift and Burt Lancaster could have canceled each other out when they were both nominated in the same Best Actor category for From Here to Eternity (one of the reasons for the studio politics of submitting actors in Supporting categories even if they have as much screentime as the "lead" actor.) All of this, to me, is B.S. Holden's peformance in Stalag 17 should be required viewing for would be actors who want to learn how to play a compelling antihero.

well deserved.:) the Most people dont Think that Holden should have won the Oscar this year and it belonged to Clift Instead-But I Disagree, I Think Clift was more a supporting male character than lead in From Here to Eternity, and He should have won the Award in the best SUPORTING actor Catagory Instead for lead (Also More People have seen From here to eterny that have seen stalag 17but that have nothing to do with that one performance was better than the anthor).. But for me, It is sOOOHard to choice who give the best Performance in best supporting actor Between Both Sinatra (that was the Actuall Winner) and Clift (Who was nominated in this catagory even of he was more supporting) give incredible performances in from here to eterny and it is actually the hardest choice to chose of ALL the Years of nominees in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best supporting actress catagoreis of all time imo! I heard somewhere that Billy Wilder sent Holden a telegram that said, "Wasn't that second 'Thank You' a bit redundant?" On a sour note, Holden's wife at the time was quoted as saying that Holden was bitter over the "snub" he felt he recieved for not recieving an Oscar for "Sunset Blvd." and actually threw his award in the ocean while boating. Perhaps that explains his terse, (although polite) nod to recieving it. Weird if that's true. I have heard the "tossing in the ocean" part from more than one souirce. Sad if true that he allowed such feelings to mar the event of rhim. For example, look how long John Wayne waited for his after "Sands of Iwo Jima"?

Allegedly they were running short on time so Holden was given the bum's rush, hence his brief speech. Watch Grace Kelly's clip where he says "Time is running short again." He handled it with grace though. And so handsome!

I believe Clift and Lancaster split the vote giving Holden the win. Its fine by me. Holden makes the film. He should have won for Sunset Boulevard instead of Jose Ferrer in a very hammy role Cyrano de Bergerac.

Most undervalued actor in Hollywood history (well, almost. There are others as well). Maybe because he was handsome? But Stalag 17 has been one of my favourite movies since I was a child and he is great there as he was in SB. He got it this time probably because Lancaster and Clift took votes from each other. But he was better than both anyway and FHTE is not even half as good as Stalag 17.

Wow, he beat out everyone including the most famous and perhaps the best assembled classical actors in a single in hollywood history namely From Here Go Eternity...!!!
His best performance was his I Love Lucy appearance where Lucy lit her nose. And you see a horrified Bill Holden! Still one of the best comedy scenes ever!

Great actor, great film. Maybe if all the winners reverted back to a simple "thank you" in accepting the Oscar, the modern Oscar shows wouldn't be such a drag-out for 3 hours and get it all done in a respectable 1 and a half hours tops.
The speeches aren't really the problem. It's the lame sketches and way too many montages that drag the show.

The reason he only said Thank You is because the broadcast was running late and Donald O’Conner told him to “take the thing and get off”. Always bothered him that he was able to thank those he felt indebted to.

I th hink everyone in Hollywood, including Holden himself, knew that the real winner should have been Clift. I remember reading something about it years ago--that the Academy felt that it owed Mr. Holden an Oscar for some such reason. But what was really riveting for me in this video was Shirley Booth. What a graciious, calm presence she had. And what an amazing actress she was. The U.S. film instrustry doesn't produce actors of her caliber any more.

Agreed. Eternity cannot win Best Picture without Montgomery Clift. He was the heart and soul of that picture. It haunted him the rest of his career, he really wanted it for that picture. All the other actors some winning and claiming Clift was the one that inspired them. Travesty.

William holden should have at least got nominated for the wild bunch 1969,clift and Lancaster got nominated for best actor in the same film thus leaving the way for holden to win.never did care for any of brandos films except viva Zapata 1952 and one eyed jacks 1961.

This was obviously a consolation prize for them not giving him the Oscar for Sunset Boulevard. Montgomery Clift should have won this award, which Holden even said himself, him or Burt Lancaster.

Did you know Bill Holden & his wife thought that it was given to him for the previous year when he was truly snubbed as he was the best in Sunset Boulevard.
I think that year it was given to Gregory Peck for political reason. Peck was certainly a star but hardly could act specially at the caliber of Bill Holden.
David Lean once said that Bill Holden was the best & most intense actor he had directed. David had directed Alec Guinness, Peter O’Toole, Antony Quinn, Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger, Richard Burton, & Robert Mitchum.
His films, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan’s Daughter, Bridge Over River Kwaii, Brief Encounter, etc.
peck won in 1962 or 03 for to kill mocking bird. holden did not loose to peck in 1950 for Sunset Blvd. holden was more talented sure but i will not say peck could not act. his role in to kill a mocking bird is seen today as one of the best performances by an actor ever.

Many stars in Hollywood could not act. Take Humphrey Bogart for example, an ugly, short guy with terrible voice who could not act but a superstar nevertheless.

A heartbreaking tidbit: After the ceremony, Holden's high on winning the Oscar was punctured by his own wife, who told him that he didn't really win for Stalag 17, but as a make-up award for Sunset Boulevard two years earlier. It has also been argued that Holden may have had the advantage that Montgomery Clift and Burt Lancaster could have canceled each other out when they were both nominated in the same Best Actor category for From Here to Eternity (one of the reasons for the studio politics of submitting actors in Supporting categories even if they have as much screentime as the "lead" actor.) All of this, to me, is B.S. Holden's peformance in Stalag 17 should be required viewing for would be actors who want to learn how to play a compelling antihero.

well deserved.:) the Most people dont Think that Holden should have won the Oscar this year and it belonged to Clift Instead-But I Disagree, I Think Clift was more a supporting male character than lead in From Here to Eternity, and He should have won the Award in the best SUPORTING actor Catagory Instead for lead (Also More People have seen From here to eterny that have seen stalag 17but that have nothing to do with that one performance was better than the anthor).. But for me, It is sOOOHard to choice who give the best Performance in best supporting actor Between Both Sinatra (that was the Actuall Winner) and Clift (Who was nominated in this catagory even of he was more supporting) give incredible performances in from here to eterny and it is actually the hardest choice to chose of ALL the Years of nominees in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best supporting actress catagoreis of all time imo! I MUST give both clift and Sinatra the Oscar together as a Tie, and maybe the only tie i am going to give from all tthe acting catagiries. You cant choose an Oscar to only one actor when Another actor was EXACTLY so Great! the Academy has all sow given a tie in best actor in 1931 for Fredric March in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Wallece Beery for the Champ AND in best actress in 1968 For Katharibe Hepburn for the Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl! I heard somewhere that Billy Wilder sent Holden a telegram that said, "Wasn't that second 'Thank You' a bit redundant?" On a sour note, Holden's wife at the time was quoted as saying that Holden was bitter over the "snub" he felt he recieved for not recieving an Oscar for "Sunset Blvd." and actually threw his award in the ocean while boating. Perhaps that explains his terse, (although polite) nod to recieving it. Weird if that's true. I have heard the "tossing in the ocean" part from more than one souirce. Sad if true that he allowed such feelings to mar the event of rhim. For example, look how long John Wayne waited for his after "Sands of Iwo Jima"?
