    • @EasyOSX

      I appreciate the kind words.
So Mac upgrades are generally safe, but with so many different machines and configurations, it’s possible for something to go wrong. Perhaps you lose power in the middle of the upgrade, or perhaps there’s an issue with the upgrade itself that causes problems with your machine. We’ve seen reports that some 2013/2014 MacBook Airs and Pros have been bricked and won’t work properly when trying to install Big Sur. If you have your data backed up to an external hard drive or to the cloud, you can at least take some comfort in knowing your data hasn’t been lost and you can either work from another machine, or and quickly put it back on your machine once it is fixed or replaced.

@@EasyOSX oh ok, but I dont really have the money to buy a new hard drive. Is it better if i dont upgrade or should i just take a risk and try to install Big Sur?

While it’s best to have a couple backups, you could put your stuff into a cloud service provider on one of their free tiers depending on how much stuff you have, or even a flash drive or series of them. Dropbox gives you 2 gigs of space for free, iCloud 5 gigs, Google Drive gives your 15 for free. That might help you a bit if any of those will give you enough space.
I would always recommend having a backup regardless, and if you’re still running Mojave or Catalina, Apple will still be giving you security updates for the time being

Not officially anyway. There are unofficial tools that may allow you to upgrade, namely the OpenCore Legacy Patcher, but it's not as straightforward as you may be used to upgrading from Apple.

What model of Mac are you using? Your machine should tell you if you hit the Apple logo in the top left corner of the screen and then hit “About This Mac”. A window should pop up and tell you the version of Mac OS you’re running (ex: Mac OS 10.15 “Catalina”) and the Mac model (ex: MacBook Air mid-2014)

Hey Ran, assuming your MacBook is a supported model, then you should just be able to follow the directions in the video to download and install Big Sur from the App Store. That said, here is the link to directly to the Big Sur page in the App Store, since the page is probably hidden with Monterey being recently released.

Yeah a 2015 MBP should be able to run Big Sur.
So to make sure I’m following, you’ve got an SSD installed in the MacBook Pro, and you’re trying to run the installer from an external HDD running El Capitan correct? Does it not show the internal SSD as an installer option? What does that SSD show in Disk Utility? It may be the SSD is not initialized

Hey Cali. It’s entirely possible to upgrade directly from High Sierra to Big Sur. The one thing is we’ll need to make sure your Mac is compatible with Big Sur. If you already know that it is, then can download and install Big Sur from the App Store. If you don’t know, then you can let me know what Mac model and the year it was made, I can help you figure out what newer version of Mac OS you can go to.
To find this, hit the Apple logo in the top left corner of the screen and then hit “About This Mac”. A window will pop up telling you what model Mac you’re using (eg MacBook Air mid 2013).
