At first glance you might think the result of this drag race is a foregone conclusion. Surely there’s no way a BMW M3 can beat a Porsche 911 Turbo S over the quarter-mile, right?
Well let’s check out the stats. Starting with the Porsche, it’s powered by a glorious 3.8-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can deliver 650hp and 800Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels, and it weighs in at 1,640kg. If you were looking to pick one up, prices start from around £180,000.
Then we have the BMW M3. It comes in a whole lot cheaper than the Porsche, with prices starting from around £84,000. However, this one has had around £8,000 spent on it to give it a tune… And the results are INCREDIBLE! It’s still packing a 3-litre twin-turbo straight six, but the power output has increased from 510hp & 650Nm to 750hp and 900Nm! What’s more, the weight hasn’t been affected, so it still tips the scales at 1,780kg.

@@TeacherToolkitDemo stop fibbing man b58 and s58 are notoriously bad when tuned. Most UK remappers and tuners won't touch them now because of how unreliable they've proven to be even stage1 non-agressive maps blow them up pretty swiftly. BMW guys need to accept that bmw cars are junk, absolute junk and the B58 is NOT a closed deck at all it's a lie go look at the top shelf of the block and come back and tell me uts a closed deck.

Damn if I had an M3 I would immediately give those guys a call. For 8k that is an insane difference and well worth it. props to the boys over at Tom Rigley.
Then your warranty would dissappear and then 3 weeks later when it blew up you'd be on the street homeless as BMW would demand the entire payment for the car.. which you don't have so a solicitor comes for your house... and ANOTHER homeless ex-bmw owner

@@bigduphusaj162 I have a tuned G80. Cost me $5k USD to do the same. Tune with dme unlock: $2600, catted downpipe plus install $2400… no it’s not set to kill. These cars in kill mode make about 850 hp with port injection and only one known blown motor so far because the port injection had a failure. Red Bull team found the forged s58 motor was still running at 1300 awhp…

Even with that M3 winning, my jaw is always dropped by how amazing the 911 turbo s is. It is just so consistently, amazingly fast, and it looks beautiful doing it.

@@nighthawk0077 how do you know that? The S58 makes over 750 at the wheels with nothing but a stage 2 e50 tune. No need to upgrade the turbo to get these numbers. Especially don’t need to upgrade the fuel system, the S58 already has not 1 but 2 HPFPs. There’s plenty of fueling.

The S58/B58 is amazing engine to work with! I've got one in my M240i and less than £1000 for some basic bolt ons and a tune and you're close to 500HP. Seems like even more HP gain here!

Built S55 can make 1300whp. This S58 should be ever better eventually. Stage 2 map for £600 from MHD or boot mod. You don’t even need to spend £8000 to do this.

I was surprised when Mat didn't mention the usual BMW's erratic launch mode. Maybe he let Yanni drive it thinking he could win because of that but he ended up shooting himself in the foot.
@@module79l28 the G generation BMWs have massively improved launch control systems over the F generation. Those F ones were pretty stubborn indeed.

Problem with the mcmurtry seems to be it's very easily upset even a stone on the road has it throwing a fit and they basically relying on the principal that even if the car spins it won't go far as its still sucking to the road.. and the nightmare for them is once the car lifts even one side off the road for even a split second the entire thing is basically toast as it's relying on the skirt to get suction. I'm not sure they will let it on a bumpy old airfield at its full 1000bhp and 24000rpm fan mode
Edit: catchpole was in one that spun but he was absolutely whisky footing the throttle out of fear. He never mentioned it on that vid but he was on another podcast and got asked what the issue with it might be if any issue is discovered in the future. His reply was a bit eye opening as he said he thinks it would end your life in a huge accident if you were on the limit and even one fan shut down. He didn't think one fan would save you as that would equate to only 12000rpm which he had it on its lower 1200rpm setting earlier when he first got in it. He basically thinks if one fan goes you are in the wall.

Normally the tuned cars dont fare so well, but this one seemed on point. No issues or hiccups, just solid tuning that got the power down.

Buy a old golf put vr6 in it and and spend the rest of those 70k on tuning watch what happens with the bmw. 70k is really a lot 40k will be enough and you will have left over money.

In Porsches, you should try using sport response mode on the rolling races. It's what the button was made for. It works better than sport plus for rapid acceleration while moving.
Matt, this might sound like a silly question. but, are you pressing the "speed response" button, before launch in sports + mode? (The button that looks like it could be a NOS button), on the dial of the setting circular button? It definitely helps with launches! ;)

I can't wait for the next generation of the 911 Turbo S. Seems like a lot of cars have now caught up the insane performance of the this generation's Turbo S so I'm just really hoping and looking forward to the next one to see it put these cars in their place :D
Engine in the back is one reason why it launshes so good.
this 992 generation just came out fairly recently
They have also used the same turbo S for so many videos the tires are probably worn out, it used to make 10.1 quarter mile reliability
@@vikinnorway6725 ehh not quite, having the engine at the back is actually a disadvantage for launches. The 911 compensates through the fact that it's got massively wider tyres at the back (315mm vs 255mm at the front, a massive difference) and through the AWD system which moderates power soo well when launching. So you can say the 911 launches well _despite_ the fact that it doesn't have the ideal set up for it.
In an ideal AWD launch car you want the weight to be towards the front, such that when the weight shifts back during a launch each tyre gets about the same amount of weight over it. That way you aren't required to compensate through tyre width and other clever things.
But doing so has disadvantages, your braking performance will suffer because there will be much more weight towards the front when braking. Handling will also suffer since the front tyres have to work harder with all that weight over them.
The Hellcat is a good example of the other side of the coin. It's front heavy on purpose since it's meant to launch well on a drag strip (and it does so really well despite being RWD), but it also sacrifices handling to get there. Its setup is the polar opposite of the 911, which prioritizes handling.
@@pedros43ful It's not the same car. 911 HUL has been the registration number of the Porsche GB press fleet 911 Turbo since at least 1979: they replace the car under it every so often. This is a new one with the burgundy interior, it was not the same a few months ago
