Matco Michael is back and has his Matco Tooltruck loaded down as usual. This week we take a look at the improved ratchet design with the Matco 1/2" ratchets. This design is shown up close and personal with the old version against the new version with a demo. Pretty cool tools to kick off your weekend!

I'm not a mechanic, and probably less than average as a diy'er, but since I found your channel, between Matco Michael's knowledge and "ownership" of his brand, and your tool reviews, I've been obsessed with replacing my box store tools with tool truck tools. Got the Matco 3/8 locking flex head, Snap On screwdrivers and T handle hex and torx, and the SAE set of Mac reversible ratcheting wrenches.
What a sucker
There are plenty of high quality tools that you can get, especially for a DYIer, that are much less expensive. These are high quality tools no doubt but you are paying a lot for no real reason.
@@nachoisme
Not for the Taiwanese imports, but the extra cost can be very well worth it if you're getting American made tools.
@@TylerSnyder305 9 times out of 10 you’re not. Most of the shit on the truck is made in Taiwan or China now. Go buy Mayhew for us made and tekton for bang for buck.
@@hunterramsey3132 I like the Tekton hard handles which are a joint product between WILDE and another company who does the handles, but I won't buy imported wrenches ratchets and sockets.
For these things I buy WRIGHT tool.
Wd40 as a tool cleaner is great , most penetrating oil works great
Tub o towels for the win!!! Use them all the time.. even on my hands when you can't go to the sink and wash up.
Matco Michael just made a great case for SnapOn’s dual 80 technology. Look at the pawl of your newer ratchets side by side and Snapon has stayed well ahead of the curve.
I have 3/8" and 1/2" Stanley black chrome dual pawl 120 tooth ratchets that are innovative. They are my goto ratchets. Very little backlash and they work in amazingly tight situations.
The redesigned it and fixed it - problem solved. Matco ratchets are slimmer and lever recessed the Snapon ones are HUGE and lever sticks up.
Snap-on's can definitely go way longer any maintenance
@@mt1885eah I love my snap ons, but that bottom extruding out is annoying as hell. It keeps getting bumped an unlocking.
Of course I’m talking about the locking flex head.
@@samuelw.3992that locking flex head will undo so easily -__-
Happy Friday KooN Trucking.
Hope you had a nice week!
Have a nice evening and a great weekend!
Thanks! You too!
Clay you are the reason I now own multiple Matco locking flex head comfort grip ratchets. They're awesome. Could you please share the part # of the 3/8 drive kit for the 1/4 drive body ?
I’m retired but still working on small engines, still love looking in tool trucks
Both Matco and snapon
Wish we had a cornwell truck
Thanks for the quality content man. It's almost like a tool podcast.
Glad you enjoy it!
I’m glad they changed the paws, bought my 1/2 and used it 4 times and it’s already been rebuilt twice.
I really liked the Samsung Rugby flip phone! As for ratchets I super lube them out of the box new and keep them lubed up with next to no failures! Cleaning tools I use WD-40 on wrenches, impacts, chromes, etc, etc, etc.... , and tub-o-towels for cleaning comfort grips, and plastic handles/ power tools. Everything is clean and ready to go! Thanks for the great video content Clay and Michael!
I still have my bag phone and my brick phone and a razor that's been like 35 years ago. I like the line wrench set. 🔧🔧🔧🔧
The movie rental store story is funny lol. What was also painfull is when you had to sit there while it was rewinding 😂
Haha yeah
think it’s about time for ol koon to come back down to Tennessee on my truck and do a Big tool truck video 😉🙌
Everyone comment if y’all want koon to come visit techs choice agin!!!!
Yes x10
Ok you talked me into it! Broadway after?
YUPPPPP!!!! 👍 👌
Yes the Techs Choice videos are awesome! Always have a variety
I’m a diy er, just got my first matco ratchet. I have snap on. Gotta say I’m lovin it so far. Slimmer head no matter what people say I measured them with a socket on. Got the flex head of course. Already ordered another one.
I periodically open my ratchets up wipe old grease out and put a little synthetic caliper grease in them make them slick as snot.
That's good to know even though I've never broken a matco ratchet yet
Awesome tools!! Truck is loaded
Happy St Patrick's day and happy Friday boys and girls!
I have been repairing Matco ratchets for a few years with the GW 84 tooth kits. Customers have had NO issues with them. Only problem is, it is getting harder to get the 84 tooth kits, as GW is going to 90 tooth and 120 tooth dual pawl heads.
Nextels were tanks!!
Hell ya fixed the ratchets 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
For tool cleaning I have been using silicone spray for years now. Soft grip handles and power tool grips stay nice and it cuts right through grease and oil with a rag. I haven't seen or felt any issues with any of my tools using it and as long as you wiped it off, there's no greasy or slippery feeling afterward.
Solvent works amazing on soft grip handles as well. They will come back to like new condition
Yeah I use that super lube on all my forcing screws and various other stuff man that stuffs the absolute best
I wish they would go to screws for the face plate instead of clip. I also pull my ratchet apart a put some superlube in them.
nah the belt clip in the door is crazy first time i started carrying a p.n. i laid on that fender and left a good ting thankfully no paint but the dealership was able to knock that out
I need a big phone to watch Koon Trucking.
So why not add a center position on the selector switch which would engage all teeth ,effectively making it a breaker bar?
Would be nice if we had a local dealer, I broke my 1/2” pawl and ordered and repaired it myself with the new kit because it’s faster then sending the tool in for the warranty
Just can’t beat snapon racket for 60 years number one
I swore I’d never have a smart watch. Get one. Leave your phone in tool box and work. Check watch and if it’s important u can get it. I never break my watch and my phone is brand new at every break I take
Those watch crystals are hard!
My wife bought one used because they’re pricy. It had light scratches and a big gouge in the crystal.
I said give it to me. I never saw a scratch I couldn’t buff out.
I tried polishing compound. It did nothing. I finally used an 8” cotton wheel on a grinder with ruby polishing compound.
Then it took 15 minutes on that little square inch of glass!
It did make the light scratches disappear. And the gouge got too smooth to be visible.
Though you can feel it with a fingernail.
So you don’t need to worry the glass doesn’t have a bezel around it to protect it. The glass is tougher.
The Exclusive RED motorola razor flip phone from sprint! That was my favorite phone ever man
Mueller kueps line wrenches nice
I have about 2 dozen Snap-on ratchets and I use super lube in all of them and they have no issues. I feel like those gears need some grease in the matco ratchets. I think Michael just sold me on those flare nut wrenches, I will have my dealer thank him! Awesome video!!!
Only light grease though. The Matco's will have issues with heavy grease. The pawl sticks.
I have been using super lube in my ratchets for years and i use castle shop-solv brake cleaner it is not as harsh as other brake cleaners
I've never had a problem with the pawl/ gear on my Matco 88s. It's always the square drive that shears through the ball detent.
Super Lube is the way to go. A small tube is cheap at NAPA. It brought a 60 year old Husky ratchet back to life. I use it in all my ratchets now.
Great video 💯💯💯
Also have always used WD40 to clean ratchet gear boxes. And use a little syringe deal of Superlube to re grease.
boy, matco sure got some of the nicest tools
Those Vhs and dvd days aren’t that far in the past. But it did suck when the movie wasn’t in. Then Hollywood vid and blockbuster would do the guarantees in
Tub of Towels is the greatest innovation since sliced bread. If you are like me and work at your( my) home towns maintenance department and you work in the utilities department, Tub of Towels is a life saver. Especially if you have to repair chemical leaks. Some of the chemicals we deal with will destroy tools. I don't care who makes them. I've seen brands from Pittsburgh to Snap-On get eaten and rusted due to guys not cleaning their tools. You have to clean them. Wipe them down with Tub of Towels and lightly oil them after you are done. Tub of Towels also works great for cleaning your old smoke pole in a pinch. I am a believer.
where's Snap-on??? Still no dealer for you Koon? Nice vid
No new dealer. We are supposed to be getting one but….
i usually just use my pocket screwdriver and put a few drops of differential fluid in all my matco ratchets and they work so smooth and quiet. absolute butter. but thats just me though.
First Matco ratchet I bought blew up the first time I used it. I’m sticking with Snap On. Funny thing, I traded a Snap On ratchet for the Matco and my Matco dealer gave me a good trade ($120). When I went to trade in my Matco ratchet for another Snap On, my Snap On dealer was like I’ll give you $50 for it. Hahaha.
Ratchet 101 tonight!!
I clean mine with warm beer
I use solvent to clean up my ratchet handles all the time, they will come back to like new condition!
Good video. I got longest 1/2 they make I can't keep gears in it.
Try these out
@@KoonTrucking I am going to.
Maybe he said, im not sure will they change it out or does it have to start shipping?
When I do transmission pans or oil pans i make sure I use different ratchets because they get a nice little drip bath of fluids and i count that as my ratchet lube service.
I am a DIYer and I use Tide liquid laundry detergent to clean my hands. It makes my hands and under my nails clean as hell.
Good stuff! I do think Snap On is the way to go for a Ratchet.
I used to think that. I’ve fallen in love with the blue matco 3/8. I also love both of my Japanese ratchets( nepros and koken)
But koken is my absolute favorite over snap on by far. But I live snap on too
@@donotrobme9295 Funny you mention that. Many years ago I lost my beloved snap-on 3/8 long flex head ratchet. The cost bugged me, so I just never replaced it. About a year or so ago I broke down and bought the Koken fine tooth flex head 3/8" rachet and wow... they do make amazing tools!
The other thing I don’t like about the koken ratchet is the opposite lever than what I’m used on the snap on, and the 3/8 ratchet I bought was to short
@@gilbertg6878 ya. That’s tough. It would be similar to when I grab most other brands outta my box as they r opposite and I agree it’s a pain.
Similar to all brands need compatible batteries!!!
Do all new Matco ratchets, regardless of size or drive, have this newer ratcheting mechanism? Thanks
Cut the top off of a quart of transmission fluid. Dunk the ratchet heads into it overnight. Remove them the next morning and drip dry on towels. I've only had one Mac or Snappy ratchet fail in over 30 years. I try to do this ever couple of months.
Good to know about the redesign of the pawl. I haven't bought a Matco ratchet in years because I have one single Matco ratchet and it always starts skipping when I use it often. So I just don't use it haha! I have been eyeing the purple handles lately though. You guys might just be the reason I give another Matco ratchet a shot.
I just the blue handle matco locking flexhead used it a few times wondering if they sell paws kits they have to..still waiting for skips depends how much use
@@jamessionesini7377 I can't say if all the dealers have them but my dealer has a bag of the newly revamped 1/2" pawls on his truck
I've had the 3/8 88 tooth flex head ratchet for 7 years, never had a problem with it jamming up before, then the flex head gears stripped out so the head wouldn't stay in place. My matco dealer put a new head on it and ever since it will jam instead of ratcheting. I told him and he rebuilt it. Still does the same thing. Then I tell him I think the head is defective due to a machining defect, so instead of giving me a new head he rebuilds it again. STILL DOES IT. I've about had it. Does Michael have any input on this?
I’d tell him to replace the ratchet.
The line and sensor wrench almost look like a rich man’s crowfoot
Does/can your Matco guy travel to Speedwell TN? It’s about an hour North of Knoxville. Thanks 🤘🏻
I guess I should mention that there’s not a truck servicing this area. I called Matco to verify.
Unfortunately not it’s just a little out of his area haha
Idk if you have a video on it but what would be a good all around scan tool? I do a lot of work on my own vehicles and have just a basic OBDII scanner. I just don't have the funds to buy a few thousand dollars in a scan tool
What's the part number for the newer rachite Mechanism.?
I am lucky with my phone, have not broken it yet.Goes in my 1/4 drive socket drawer when not in use not being dropped.I remember Joe's number when he has called me,shows it as a Tennessee phone number. My 24 inch Matco ratchets,I will have to call Matco for that updated part although that has not happened to me.Cleaning my tools,I use the tub o towels you got me into.Brake clean,do not spray near cuts on your skin. Will know very well,it hurts
Still love my snap on. Got it on sale for 300 asswoopins
I had the razors but also had a few blackberry phones with the full keyboard push buttons and the pos rollerball that sucked!
I’ve went through soooo many phones lol I keep mine in the service truck
I apologize if this has already been addressed, but whatever happened to snap on videos. I vaguely remember hearing the dealer left the business to try a new venture, but do they no longer get a snap on truck or is the new dealer just camera shy?
No new dealer yet. Shouldn’t be much longer
Incase anyone other than me is wondering who make the lines wrench’s , Mueller Kueps makes them, the , here’s the part # 457 720, probably get them cheaper without the Matco branding
My phone stays on my tool box it is never in my pocket or actually used during the day!
Matco the worst ratchets, In my box. And sadly from a brand that was myb1st tool truck, my local dealer is trash and now the brand is ruined to me
I’d rather watch your videos than a movie or tv show
Thank you
Im a diesel mechanic currently working out of a 68” 7 drawer epic series toolbox and I’m wanting to upgrade to a matco but I’m afraid that I may not like the matco toolbox over my snapon how do you like your toolbox now compared to your old snapon toolbox?
I love the box
i clean my sockets and pliers with wd40 have ruined a ratchet or two with brake cleaner they plastic handles dont like it
8:34...I had a "bag-phone" in 1992... ~$2000 in '92😮
MKes you feel old huh? Haha 😂 I had a bag phone too back in the day.
Clay the worst was when dvd and blue ray was out. DVDs would all be gone but there would be blue rays and you didn't have a blue ray capable player
Yeah ! I remember that now
They need a centering peg in the back of the gear
I think that's why koken ratchets are so good.. the peg keeps everything inline and maximum tooth contact.. only downside is they're no sealed as well.. but junk ends up in ya ratchet gears regardless
Welp that explains everything. But I spray brake cleaner on a rag and then wipe it down. Then dry it off so it don't deliberately sit on there.
Since when does the Matco truck sell Girl Scout cookies
Since they help raise money for Girl Scouts, I think it’s awesome. Not to mention they are good
My macro ratchets continuously fail. My 3/8 18in finally broke where the Paul presses against the side of the case finally cracked the case.. they're great rackets but they're like high-maintenance girlfriends
Anyone have the part number for this upgrade kit? Been trying to get mine fixed but my matco distributor has been ghosting me since I don’t owe him anything.
How bill and wallie?
What is the Matco part number for that knife?
ANy one know if this has been updated in all the ratchets? if i buy a new 1/4 or 3/8 ratchet will it be this new style? Can i have my older 3/8 ratchet upgraded?
Just the 1/2” that was having the issues I think
What’s the part number for the gear update?
I reckon you yunguns never wore a chain belt ;-)
Can I upgrade my older matco ratchets to the 88 tooth set up? I have a clapped out 1/4" and 1/2" in the non 88 tooth. I also own a neo chrome 3/8th 88 tooth matco and had that rebuilt once quite a few years ago.
Watch today’s Matco video because we discussed this just for you
@@KoonTrucking wow thats awesome! Thanks man!
@KoonTrucking my local Matco Dealer upgraded my old ratchets straight up to the newest 88 models. I am going to also upgrade my old 30" 1/2" ratchet as well! Thanks again for your help and information as well as to Mrs. Matco.
Y’all got rain 🌧️ coming, we flooded again with losses. Ok I too had a razor cell. Man we old AF Clay
Yeah I know man! Haha
I’m going to have my dealer add new paws on all of my ratchets. He’s going to hate me 😂😂😂
Good new tools. Any news on a new snap on or Mac dealer
Nope

Yeah if you would want to put Taiwan internals in a USA ratchet it would be ok. But there’s differences in the 88 tooth Matco we showed them in detail side by side. The old school Matco ratchets aren’t the same as the new ones.

How many clients does Michael have, and how many ratchets does he need to rebuild in a month? If I rebuilt a ratchet more than twice for a guy I would upsale him a breaker bar.
Props for improving the design? How many years did that take? Should be ashamed to release bad designs, not applauded for fixing a fugh up years after the fact.
Pumatic guns are some of the most powerful ones out there, so I'm not too sure about things being more torqued because of the modern guns.... Maybe cuz of less common sense and guys don't torque things to me. Just ugaduga things together
Marco doesn’t make any tools that’s why it took so long to fix there ratchets ! I personally like snap on because they are the tool manufacturers of most of there products i support American made products plus snap on only uses new steel!
Well for most things you are correct but you can’t get that Matco ratchet anywhere else or under another brand because Matco has the exclusive on it with AJ Manufacturing so… get a Matco ratchet some where else.
