I have a doubt. How were you sure that the pollutant is e. coli because other coliforms such as enterobacter, citrobacter and klebsiella spp. are gram negative also. And all of four of these microorganisms are rod shaped.
i.e why confirmative and completed step are carried out!!
Therefore MPN is performed in 3 steps to eliminate any doubt
