A true craftsman at work, all I can say is that table is a pure work of art, function, design and craftsmanship all coming together and it is pleasing to find someone who uses hand tools.
Amazing! Videos like this will inspire a whole new generation of woodworkers. You really showcase the beauty of an amazing trade.

An inspiring piece of work: the table, the videos, and the music too. I look forward to each of your videos, Tom, but I do think this series is my favourite. The range of skills and the various joints that you demonstrate are very helpful as well as entertaining. I am enjoying both of your books immensely too. Please keep it all coming.

Loved the background music, and loved the beautiful craftsmanship even more. The drafting table came out wonderfully.
Absolutely beautiful, nicely done sir. I also enjoy the tunes you put to your work. It's nice to know that there are still people that still enjoy, and have a passion for the beauty, and the craftsmanship of handmade furniture. Thank you for these videos, and for not squandering your talents, bravo sir!
You do beautiful work Tom!
Thanks Abby-
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship, patience, determination...well done. I posted it on an architects page that I am a member of..
Great work and beautiful piece. Congrats!
I shared in your rapture as the pieces came together in their final form. A bit of guilt for not having watched all prior videos. This is truly a piece for the ages and maybe your grandson will design world peace on it!
WOW! I am glad YT suggested your channel to me. This table is more beautiful than many museum pieces. I hope to see you make a musical instrument. -John
This table will get more beautiful with age. The walnut will darken and the maple will get a subtle amber hue. I wish I could see it in a few years.
An art piece! Like watching an amazing film! Enjoyed every second!
Fábio Montez Thanks Fabio!
Wow! What a great piece. I really enjoyed the videos. Thanks
You are a true master of design and craftsman!

Benedek Alpar Thank you !!
Beautiful! Can't wait for the next project series.
Beautiful table Tom. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and look forward to the next.
Hello Tom was an incredible job
Absolutely stunning piece of craftsmanship there Tom. I was surprised you didn't use brass slotted screws though. Perhaps that's just an English thing. But, again absolutely outstanding; a pleasure to watch... and listen. Hope there's more to come soon.
Tak8835-
thanks for the comments. It's funny you mentioned that- I meant to change these out as they were what I had on hand when I finished the project. I completely forgot about them over the last few years but now that you've reminded me, I think I'll swap them out! Brass would be nice and match the paper tray hardware I used.
Cheers~
One of your videos popped up in my suggested videos. I can't believe it has taken me this long to discover you! Thank you for your time, and the gift of knowledge you impart, I look forward to learning from you.
+Chad Smiley Thanks Chad! Very much appreciated~
+Tom Fidgen
It's kind of crazy, actually. I've been doing some work (restoring a sub-floor) in a room full of antiques, and one of the many pieces that I've had my eye on is a 300lb two-piece drafting bench. I've been considering the benefits of making my own for drafting ideas that come into my head, and by chance I stumbled upon your video series. I like it because it is elegant and practical. Am I understanding correctly that the detailed design for this project is outlined in your newest book?
yes- the book is called The Unplugged Woodshop - its available online and st most book stores. all the best~
Cool! Table and Hair!
Fantastic work
Well done Tom
This is a beautiful drafting table!!
Just saw this site.... wow... what workmanship... would have loved to have had someone to teach me these skills... aah well, the boat has sailed so can only sit and admire. Well done.
Completely Superb .....on all fronts.
Im impressed to tell you that fine wood working should be like art. Fine not huge thick timbers . The true masters always made thier furniture the strongest with the least amount of wood. Your craftmanship is phenomenal. Your technique impeccable. Your art so so. Heres to the wood cheers.
love this
Gabriel, I find it interesting that you could not follow your own advice while writing your comment. You accuse Tom of being heavy handed with lumber yet you seem oblivious to the heavy hand of your own commentary.
In defense of the "artistry" of Mr. Fidgen's Architect's Table, think masculine rather then feminine, think confidence rather then airy. Imagine it in a paneled library perhaps next to a stone fireplace. Gabriel, ask yourself, are men not handsome? Are mountains not majestic? Can only lace or flowers have beauty? The Architects Table is a remarkable piece, the fact that you cannot see the strength in this design is not the fault of the maker.
Amazing genius Tom.
Very very very impressive! cant believe it was done all by hand. Thoroughly enjoyed the tunes as well! Well done man, I envy your talents.
george erasmus Thanks George !
Beautiful. Really nice job. Keep up the good work.
uh-wow! i dont know what more amazing: the table itself or the fact it was made by hand!
Absolutely blown away by not only the skill and patience, but by the love and passion you abviously have for what you do. I am wondering about the final assembly though... I know why you finish before final glue-up, but how long do you wait after the last coat of finish to assemble? I should think the clamps you use would leave hellacious indentations in an un-cured finish. Looking forward to seeing you at the Halifax Lee Valley. Have a good summer in Cape Breton!!
Hi Lawrence,
great to hear from someone on the home front -;)
as for the finish and waiting times- I think I only waited overnight.
It's a shellac finish and if you look closely in the video, at the point where I apply the clamps, you'll notice some blue painters tape on the top of the leg.
What you can't see is the 1/8-in. poplar protector, covering the outside of the leg ( the blue tape is holding it in place ) so my clamps never actually touch the work piece~; )
Make sure to say hello at LV in Halifax....
see you in August and thanks for the comments.
Tom
Lawrence, shellac dries very fast. It is alcohol based and dries in minutes rather then hours.
Came out awesome! Great job as usual Tom, another masterpiece.
Talented wood worker and musician. Super impressed. Looking forward to watching your other videos and upcoming. Thanks for sharing!
Great work. Your videos are very pleasant to watch - we learn something and we enjoy every second of it.
Thanks for all the positive feedback folks !!
; )
hey, thanks , awesome videos!! how do you stop it from moving back or forth if you lean into it?
thanks for the interest. I used brass rods as stops- they're glued into the ends of some old handplane knobs and hold the table in place through a series of drilled holes. Full details in my book- the Unplugged Woodshop.
all the best~
much thanks, ima check it!
Tom Fidgen amazing work..amazing tunes as a bonus!
Beautiful work.
perfection , i respect you for the love that you devote for your work . congrats!

Hypnotized !!! Just Hats Off !!

Your table turned out stunning!! I've been wanting to build nearly the exact table, only using curly maple and purple heart....
on my way to get one of your books now!
beautiful work
Hi Tom,
the desk looks really great. It is a abzulutes unique.
Geb a comment right, the brass screws nice look to the case.
Looking forward to your next product video. Since every video of you, a dream of craftsmanship is.
This is what you can call a handmade, great effort i love your work , greetings
Many thanks!
Thank you for sharing this!
Amazing Unplugged !!! :) Greetings from Argentina
Nicely done! I'm longing for the day when I can have my own little workshop. Though I doubt that I will ever produce such fine work. Excellent!
Einar,
Thanks for the comments. With a little practice and some finely sharpened hand tools, you'll be able to do this kind of work too! It doesn't happen overnight, but the journey is the destination-; )
All the best
Tom Fidgen Top Quality. My old teacher used to always say the secret was razor sharp tools and an even sharper pencil :-) fine workmanship. Not a power tool in sight. Warms my heart
Tom, thanks for taking the time to post your videos. I enjoy them and find your work inspirational. Besides, this doesn't look so hard, twenty or thirty thousand hours of practice and I could probably pound one of these out no sweat :)
Don't sell yourself short, Terry. It only takes about 10,000 hours to reach mastery at any given skill. Figure a couple hours a night and 8 Saturday and Sunday with no breaks and you and I could reach close to Tom's level in a measly 10 years, or so.
Beautiful work, Tom! Love the music, as well. Your channel is a new discovery for me. Time to explore. :-)
Fantastic work !
thanks Philip!
I absolutely love this table. I have to work on my joinery before I attempt it, but it's definitely on my list. That being said, I have to admit I'd probably watch your "Driving a Nail into a 2x4" video, just to listen to the songs.
+Michael Finley Many thanks! - ; ))
Truly a work of art. My compliments to you, sir. A question came to mind after watching all of these sections... How many man hours did it take from layout to final assembly?
Great design, great execution, and millions of points for doing it all with hand tools.
I did have a question about the table top, though. I was surprised to see you attach the top with screws after seeing how much attention you gave to movement in the last video (breadboard ends.) Are you at all concerned with the top moving in relation to the base? I'm very new at this and would love your opinion.
Thanks!
+Davidthetree hey David, thanks for the interest- that's a great question. The screw holes are larger than the screws for a bit of wiggle room...that, along with the fact that the table is laminated and on edge left enough space any any of the small amount of movement that occurred. If the top had been made from flat sawn stock, or even out of a few larger planks, then for sure, the screw holes would have been made into slots to allow for some movement. It's been 4 years ( believe it or not ) since I finished this piece and it's still like the day it was finished. thanks again for the question, hope that helps!
I would pay millons to have this skill. absolutely great work. thanks for sahing it.
Insane masterpiece, astounding.
love the fact that you finished the piece before assembly. what was the glue that you used? and how was the clean up? keep up the great work.
Loay Abu-Husein, thanks for the comments. That's hot hide glue (animal glue) which makes clean up very easy. You wait a few minutes and allow the glue to get tacky- with a damp rag, you're able to wipe away any squeeze out.
all the best-
