Um... ego is not a contraction of egocentric. Ego, as defined in the Jungian or Freudian sense, talks about the how the self defines oneself. It's a neutral term. Ego is how one determines one's self-confidence or self-esteem. It's the bridge between the conscious and the unconscious. So, the lyrics fit. J-Hope is defining how he is deriving his confidence. He reflects the past and acknowledges how he has been mold by all his experiences. So the swagger I feel from the MV tells me that this boy is gonna go forward with head held up high to conquer whatever may come his way.
PD is right though, even in Jungian psychology the ego can be overly-inflated or overly-restricted/structured/inflexible or under-developed, which would mean you become egocentric or have low self-esteem or identify too much with your persona/a mask, etc... Not everyone has a healthy ego, just like not everyone has a healthy shadow or has integrated the different parts of themselves... Basically, his expectation could have been a posible way to portray the ego. I'm really happy Hobi choose to portray a healthy and integrated ego though, it's not how it's usually portrayed in media.
Ego is the centre of consciousness. Ego is greek for "i" one must have a strong ego to be able to make decisions for conscious part of psyche and such ego is not a bad thing or about egotism like the mainstream world say about it according to jungian, map of the soul book a weak ego is not the best, to have a big ego is bad(egocentric what ppl think "ego" as a whole means), to have a strong ego (awareness) is a very good thing which hobi put out in his solo.
i'm really surprised i'm not seeing any other comments about this, but the beginning of the song, the "we are now going to progress to some steps.... etc" and the "ready, set, and begin" are from the beginning of their first song(Intro: 2 COOL 4 SKOOL) on their first album! and the start of the video is a rewind through their past music videos. pretty sure the visual of the words is from an early teaser or intro video too. that detail is what really made this song stand out to me, and makes it really special!
Yeah I was gonna comment this if no one else did! And to think it’s rly important considering that not only ego but also shadow and ON link to they older songs (shadow with part is the instrumental and ON from N.O)
its ego as in “self”, not as egocentric. i get what you mean when you reason though. i really missed you though, i feel like i haven’t been seeing ur videos in a while.
Since bts last two albums are based of carl jung map of the soul theory, according to him the ego represents the conscious mind which includes the thoughts, memories, and emotions a person is aware of. And ego is responsible for feelings of identity. This is why the video is light and colorful bc he accepts his true self, including the shadow
It’s funny because this sounds like such a lighthearted fun song but it’s one of the deepest of the whole album. That’s exactly how I picture j-hope, sunshine on the outside but has been through a lot to get to that point. I actually related to it a lot, he talks about a rough past growing up, disappointing his parents, but the song is so happy because he’s finally happy. I think there’s a reason the album ends with that song, it’s a summary of everyone’s experiences and how they’ve finally reached a point where they accept the past and know it was all part of their journey.
Ego is honestly such an uplifting and refreshing song. At first it seemed as if it was the total opposite of Shadow but in reality it was actually another perspective of life/their current situation. Shadow is basically yoongis feelings of fame and being on the top (which is mostly negative with some contradicting statements(don’t let me shine/don’t let me down)) he’s feeling confused in what he wants almost, or just wants balance. And you guys all know he states that he’s lonely/the top is lonely, the shadow gets bigger with the fame, etc. But Ego takes a different approach to that fame, J-hope does acknowledge that his personal life is flying by and that it was such a hard and sad journey to get where he is now, but despite all that he knows that he must be doing something right to be in the most famous/or successful Kpop groups in the world right now. I think that is why I find this song so hopeful, in a way. Hobi has a way of finding the best in everything.
This song has a latinoamerican carnaval vibe... Specially towards the end of the song with the trumpets and the woman's powervocals, that feeling of celebration, of embracing both pain and joy with open arms and pride, the celebration of being alive, that sound that makes people wanna clap and babies be born dancing... Idk how to describe it, but both Ego and Filter have latin soul, in my humble opinion, much more than Airplane pt. 2. PS: This is why people are saying this song is World Cup material... Hobi really is our adopted son, our latinoamerican king!!^^ Reyyyyyy Joséok LMAO ARREEEEHHH ÁNGEL, ESPERANZA, SOLECITO!!!
It sounds like the type of song Brazilians would love, and I'm sure our spanish-speaking brothers and sisters too. It didn't surprise me that b-armys created the ego samba challenge the instant it came out lol
i loved this song immediately after listening to it once. it's that kind of song that i find myself needing in my life, and is perfect to turn on and listen to whenever i'm in a place where feeling good about myself is hard. it's a good reminder that having self-confidence, and a little bit of an ego, is a good thing.
In psychodynamic approach of Psychology Ego is the rational part of you, the Guardian stopping Id(focuses on plesure, impulses) and superego(voice telling how things should or should't be done because of the rules of society) from constant fight and kinda mediate choosing middle ground choices
How is no one talking about the intro that is like the one from 2cool 4school. Also how all their BigHit intro was reversing and all their MV’s where reversing💖
That intro with the saying "we are now going to progress to some steps which are a bit more difficult ..." wasn't an indication that this MV would focus on dancing xD. It is a call back to the intro of BTS's 2 Cool 4 Skool song since at the beginning of the song J-Hope recalls the beginning of his career and all the trajectory that brought him here.
i think my favorite thing about the mv is that it's so lighthearted and fun? like, there's parts where i smile every time, and the trumpet parts especially make me want to dance without worries (and yeah, as a brazilian? definitely fitting for carnaval)
Ego is my favorite song in the album, which doesn't mean the album is not as good, is just that this song really hipes me up, it's so fun and danceable, hobi did a great job~ Please react to the Commentary Film too, but I would recomend doing it after listening to the full album
The title Ego is actually referring to the Ego archetype in Jungian psychology as that is what BTS is using as their backbone theme for the MOTS series :) (Ego, Shadow, Persona, Anima)
The beginning of this music video is the same as the beginning in their debut trailer. It's like this since they're going back in time (sort of) with their music in a way. Their new title track ON is just N.O. backwards
after shadow i definitely did not expect this to drop. but it did. and i love it. the song is amazing. its screams "JHOPE" with every beat and every visual in the video. he did amazing on it. plus it will sound amazing on tour in stadiums!
I love this song so much, Is My Moto. EGO, makes a clear reference to everything that makes up a person: their bad moments, their misfortunes, their triumphs and their joys. We are our past, our plans about the future, our mistakes and the attitude with which we face life.
Thank you for reacting to this! I appreciate the insight and I totally agree with you about the instrumental drop with the trumpets being very refreshing considering the popular trend of edm drops! I'm excited for the listening party and I personally loved the video of Outro Ego. I hope you like the album!
Yaass Jung Hoseok 💜🤴💜 I'm a BLINK and I love him with all my heart ❤️❤️ this song really has a deep meaning which doesn't appear as 😅 His main dance focused song is - Just Dance .. and it's live Wembley Version is my fav solo live performance from a BTS MEMBER. 😍😍😍
I actually loving the way you filmed this video, this type of video with the vibe and how your voice came out really smooth is kinda what i am looking forward in every your videos
Actually, the green screen thing has its own meaning. For example at the start as Hoseok walks he’s moving but his background stays the same. Its to symbolise that he is moving forward in the present with his experiences around him. The meaning is Something of the sort. Just know that each video has its meaning, its not the budget. Have you wondered why Ego is obnoxiously edited? It has its own meaning. If you want to, there are theories I’ve seen on twitter and I think that’s what I like about this MV and other MV’s by BTS. No matter the budget (example is I need U, N.O, IDOL and etc.) the story is still present and well visualised open for interpretation
The beginning is a throwback to their past (I think it's actually from their debut trailer) and then you se videos from diffrent songs as a kind of a transition into our present.
I was fucking losing my mind when i couldnt play the song on spotify😂 catch me walking around campus draining my phone battery & streaming the mv over and over again ITS JUST SO POSITIVE AND HOBI. He is the only person who could spin the pretty heavy topic of the self and self discovery (and the conclusion to an album about exploring your inner demons) in such an uplifting, positive, happy way:(( im pretty sure hobi got to decide for himself what direction he wanted to take the outro when they gave it to him, but im SO happy its this. Its an amazing note to end 7 on. you just went on an entire confusing, emotional, complicated journey, starting as conflicted persona grappling with impossible questions, and ending as ego, so much happier than when you started for having gone through it all.
It was the real trumpet i guess. There is a commentary video on bangtan tv about the making of the album. It was UCLA marching band and a choir contributes to this album.
ego according to freud is the part of your consciousness that directs your personality your superego(conscious morals and ethics) and your id(unconscious desires and aggressions or human drive)
Omg I'm so ready for the listening party for MOTS7 as in this album their sound is really different and we can hear and feel the growth even though they are talking about these past 7 seven years as BTS.
Map of the Soul persona and 7 are based on carl jungs psychology book map of the soul. His 3 archetypes are the persona shadow and ego. The movie balck swan is said to be a good representation of a persons persona ego and shadow in discord
he doesn't mean that ego, he means the psychology term, like ego, id, super-ego. What you reflect of yourself to the outside world. Its from Carl Jung.
Um... ego is not a contraction of egocentric.
I mean without it even being in a psychology theory ego in greek means ''I''
PD is right though, even in Jungian psychology the ego can be overly-inflated or overly-restricted/structured/inflexible or under-developed, which would mean you become egocentric or have low self-esteem or identify too much with your persona/a mask, etc... I recognized it right away! Both this song and shadow sample from older bts work!
Meh
Yeah I was gonna comment this if no one else did! And to think it’s rly important considering that not only ego but also shadow and ON link to they older songs (shadow with part is the instrumental and ON from N.O)
Ngl I always thought it was gonna be like “we will now begin the pacer test” LMAO
its normal if the reactors didnt see old bts mvs
Someone said this song works as a World Cup song and tbh...
yes.
yes PLEASE
I always think this when i listen to Idol
also perfect for copa america! ;)
That was the first thing I thought when I heard this!
The trumpets are real. They recorded the trumpet part with the gospel adlibs in an LA recording studio.
In Jung's psychology Ego is the mediator between the Persona and the Shadow
what you say about the trumpets in the chorus: you gonna understand so much more after you see the ON commentary film: dialogue
brutavx Yes!!! He HAS to react to it
I'd love to see PD reacting to that
Hoseok is the main producer , writer , arranged everything and all. His artistry is insane. 💜
its ego as in “self”, not as egocentric. i get what you mean when you reason though. i really missed you though, i feel like i haven’t been seeing ur videos in a while.

I thought EGO was a song that could belong to Hoseok's mixtape Hope World! It definitely has a very JHope aesthetic
I know, it's like he found his sound and I'm glad he's experimenting with it
Distinctly JHope! Very HopeWorld feeling!
Ego is honestly such an uplifting and refreshing song. At first it seemed as if it was the total opposite of Shadow but in reality it was actually another perspective of life/their current situation. In all honesty, whenever Im down and I hear this song my mood is instantly better. It cheers me up right away. One of my favorite songs!
Me tooo , it’s on my instant happy playlist
thank you^^
you could also check out his _blue side_ a very relaxing one ^♡^
This song has a latinoamerican carnaval vibe... Reyyyyyy Joséok LMAO ARREEEEHHH ÁNGEL, ESPERANZA, SOLECITO!!!
I kept thinking of latin carnival when he was trying to name what it reminded him of
It sounds like the type of song Brazilians would love, and I'm sure our spanish-speaking brothers and sisters too. It didn't surprise me that b-armys created the ego samba challenge the instant it came out lol
It's afrobeat so yes
the beginning audio was their intro from their debut EP
PD's face when jhope transitioned to baby jhope uwu
I can’t wait for him to see On, but I’m also really happy he saw this art too 👌👌👌
i loved this song immediately after listening to it once. it's that kind of song that i find myself needing in my life, and is perfect to turn on and listen to whenever i'm in a place where feeling good about myself is hard. it's a good reminder that having self-confidence, and a little bit of an ego, is a good thing.
All I have to say: Jung Hoseok never fails to touch my heart with his amazing music 💜
He's so amazing, I love him
Ego is in reference to Jung’s Map of the soul. But I like your interpretation. I’m soooo excited to hear your thoughts.
In psychodynamic approach of Psychology Ego is the rational part of you, the Guardian stopping Id(focuses on plesure, impulses) and superego(voice telling how things should or should't be done because of the rules of society) from constant fight and kinda mediate choosing middle ground choices

Honestly me too
i think my favorite thing about the mv is that it's so lighthearted and fun? like, there's parts where i smile every time, and the trumpet parts especially make me want to dance without worries (and yeah, as a brazilian? definitely fitting for carnaval)
Its actually a real trumpet. Its played by the UCLA Marching Band. Its seen in the Commentary Film Dialogue thing in Bangtan TV.
Ego is my favorite song in the album, which doesn't mean the album is not as good, is just that this song really hipes me up, it's so fun and danceable, hobi did a great job~
Please react to the Commentary Film too, but I would recomend doing it after listening to the full album
I really like how BTS depict the several facets of fame and what it can bring to you and how different people can feel about it
The title Ego is actually referring to the Ego archetype in Jungian psychology as that is what BTS is using as their backbone theme for the MOTS series :) (Ego, Shadow, Persona, Anima)
Those are real trumpets PD :) They used a marching band, a jazz band and a gospel choir to help create some of the sounds on the album.
The beginning of this music video is the same as the beginning in their debut trailer. It's like this since they're going back in time (sort of) with their music in a way. Their new title track ON is just N.O. backwards
They are real trumpets, they worked with ucla marching band for the album
I think PD knows that it's talking about Carl Jung now from everyone commenting the same thing...
man, but no matter what, jhope in no more dream with the cap and head scarf outfit was a look
The trumpets are real, they worked with the marching band for this album
after shadow i definitely did not expect this to drop. but it did. and i love it. the song is amazing. its screams "JHOPE" with every beat and every visual in the video. he did amazing on it. plus it will sound amazing on tour in stadiums!
The way I waited for this for so long I’m so happy you got to see this masterpiece 🥺😭
I love this song so much, Is My Moto. EGO, makes a clear reference to everything that makes up a person: their bad moments, their misfortunes, their triumphs and their joys. We are our past, our plans about the future, our mistakes and the attitude with which we face life.
EGO here is not the way most people think of it. It’s referenced the way Carl Jung defined it.
The trumpets are real. Bighit released a commentary video which shows the recording.
This song just makes me so so happy!! I smile and dance every time I hear it and I think that would make J-Hope so proud!
Thank you for reacting to this! I appreciate the insight and I totally agree with you about the instrumental drop with the trumpets being very refreshing considering the popular trend of edm drops! I'm excited for the listening party and I personally loved the video of Outro Ego. I hope you like the album!
I really hope you’ll review the whole album!!! I always love your input on the sound💜💜💜
You’re thinking of Ego in terms of Sigmund Freud, J-Hope is using Carl Jung’s interpretation of Ego. They are different.
Yaass Jung Hoseok 💜🤴💜
I'm a BLINK and I love him with all my heart ❤️❤️ this song really has a deep meaning which doesn't appear as 😅
His main dance focused song is - Just Dance .. and it's live Wembley Version is my fav solo live performance from a BTS MEMBER. 😍😍😍
7:11 they were real trumpets. You should watch the ON commentary
I actually loving the way you filmed this video, this type of video with the vibe and how your voice came out really smooth is kinda what i am looking forward in every your videos

Waiting for this! And will wait for "On" reaction!
The beginning is a throwback to their past (I think it's actually from their debut trailer) and then you se videos from diffrent songs as a kind of a transition into our present.
The trumpets are real.
The trumpets were very real. BigHit used members of the UCLA band. BigHit actually released a documentary about it.
I was fucking losing my mind when i couldnt play the song on spotify😂 catch me walking around campus draining my phone battery & streaming the mv over and over again
ITS JUST SO POSITIVE AND HOBI. I really like all your reactions and reviews.
Thank you for your honesty. Best quality.
It's almost a carnaval Brazilian music love it
Love the song...not my favorite MV but still fun. That said, the "Oh my God...God...God...GOD!" segment may be one of happiest moments ever. 😀
the instrumental was done by the ucla marching band! super cool
ego according to freud is the part of your consciousness that directs your personality your superego(conscious morals and ethics) and your id(unconscious desires and aggressions or human drive)
Not gonna lie, this is my favorite rap song of this album!
It fits J-Hope so much 🌞
Yay so many uploads! I am glad you are catching up on everything
the chorus has such a fifa world cup soundtrack vibe
Don't know what noise I made when I saw you uploaded this 😂😂😂 either way... Hobi is amazing. This is such a happy song
YESSSS! I was waiting for this, thank you for reacting, PD!
I hope you make time to watch the ON Commentary, even if it's not on here 😌
outro: ego is samba babey
Had been waiting for this reaction
I would say a latin dembow with some groovy vibe (like everything Hobi does, groovy)
Wow, ur busy today! Love it!!!
Great review as always
Omg I'm so ready for the listening party for MOTS7 as in this album their sound is really different and we can hear and feel the growth even though they are talking about these past 7 seven years as BTS.
Its like a mix of a traditional mv and a lyric mv haha
Map of the Soul persona and 7 are based on carl jungs psychology book map of the soul. His 3 archetypes are the persona shadow and ego. The movie balck swan is said to be a good representation of a persons persona ego and shadow in discord
Yesss I’ve been waiting for this vid glad it finally came out :)
i think the trumpets and the instruments were real and it was played by ucla's marching band ig just like in ON
Just an interesting fact in Psychology ego is actually more related the part of your conscious where our desires are weighed out by norms and rules
yup yup!
The song and the video feel very J-Hope and they both also feel like a natural continuation of his Hope World mixtape. It’s hobicore in a song lol
he doesn't mean that ego, he means the psychology term, like ego, id, super-ego. What you reflect of yourself to the outside world. Its from Carl Jung.
AHHHHHHHH YESSSSSS
nice perspective you have! I hope you will do reaction to whole the album!:) ok, I see you answered this in the end hahaha
5:29 that is an interesting interpretation
Ego is more complex. Its the ego from Jung’s psychology of Map of the Soul
Nice video!
Yaaaaaaaas
I really need a listening party.
All I’m waiting for is Carpool karaoke & listening party by PD!
SO EXCITETED FOR UR REACTION TO ON
hello... just wanna point out that an ego weighs the human’s id and super ego.. it both had a positive and negative aspect.😊
Omg j-hooooope 💜💜💜👑
You'll love the video for on
IM BEING SPOILED so many vids in such a small amount of time 😭
Oh my gosh PD, four uploads in a single say??
I think this is just underated because it's J-Hope... :(
Nahh
❤️❤️ I hope you’re doing well.
So many uploads in one day, it makes me less sad that I'm sick 😂
It’s based on Carl Jung’s concept.
We're getting FED today
"ego" is about ego definition from Jungian psychology
