+Darien Cruz Music They often do demoes of stuff they just started stocking and never demoed before... So I doubt you'll find a Plexi Drive demo any time soon
There are some great pedals right there. Also love "Typical Girl". Great song. These demos are all great. Best demos on the internet. All the different gear, all the funny stuff, the great playing, great combination of sounds with each piece of gear. And the audio/video-quality is fantastic also.
The 'brown sound' refers to the tone that Van Halen achieved by altering the voltage input of his Marshall Plexi head "until the tubes started to melt". It was just below the 120VAC current from the standard American ring main, and the Variac unit was used to imitate this sound when it restricted the voltage that it passed through to the Marshall head.
Eddie Van Halen once said that he considered his guitar tone "brown like somebody hitting you with a nice, mature redwood tree as oppossed to someone throwing thin razor blades at you". Im guessin' he meant expansive and warm versus compressed and thin sounding. Anyway, AWESOME demo of the best overdrives around. Rock on Chappers!
It's from Eddie driving his Marshalls at near brown out conditions with a variac. He used the Variac to lower the output of his amps so he could crank them and not kill people in the clubs with running his amp too loud. Brown Out = Brown Sound.
I use a Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue and I can attest that the Wampler Black '65 really nails that tone quite well. Even the rather nasty overdrive from the 6V6's is replicated in this pedal. The Mesa Express is a very different sounding amp than the DRRI, but the Black '65 really makes it (almost) indistinguishable. Nice job Wampler!
Hey! I do remember, you mentioned some wempler pedals compared to my real tube od... Is it pinnacl? I think triple wreck is a bit closer with its tone, but from "another side". It is more high gain'ish. BTW: Really good juicy tones here on other pedlas!
Wampler always delivers. They do a Brad Paisley overdrive too. And his tone is just amazing. Brent is great too. His album "Hot Wired" is hard to get. He did a Jazz album with his brother on the drums. It's ok. "Smoking Section"
When you guys do these vids, how about playing a reference guitar that everyone understands like an American Standard Strat? Played through a fender deluxe reverb or DR reissue please?
no. it's simply trying to describe the overall feeling and tone of the sound using colour as a reference. If Red is fiery and sharp and treble-y, and Blue is dark and round and tubular and bassy, then brown is supposed to be the middle ground between the two. It just means a well-balanced warm sound.
Wampler makes great pedals. What's your take on their Plexi pedals? How do the foam Acoustic panels compare to the ones made of fiberglass or other insulation and covered in fabric? It is called the Brown sound because a guy named Brown ( No Lie) either did the Mods to EVH amps. The Tone King had an article on his website talking about this. The guy even came out with a few pedals also.
@Augenatic I am not a huge pantera fan, I was merely making the point that his gear is modern and VERY easy to acquire, we're not talking about finding a Dumble overdrive special for gods sake and yes your right, I heard him say he used solid states because he couldn't get enough gain from tubes and they were too warm, he liked alot of bass and treble and as everyone knows dumps the mids.
@FergusVickersGuitar I`ve got a lotta Wamplers, for boostage look no further than the boost from the Slostortion boost circuit. Although my main dirty boost at the moment is a Wampler Paisley with the gain quite low and the tone and presence high. Works great.
Dude thanks so much for this video. I'm looking at a Wampler Wreck thingy to replace my Radial Plexitube thats kinda at the end of its life. Love the plexitube but all the Wampler drives seem good.
Well, a silver sound is a shiny glossy sound, like a great polished bell. Bonamassa has this ringing timbre. Orange or red, for Gary Moore, is fiery and hot and sizzly. Think Brown but with sharper edges. That's the only way I can describe it. When I hear certain sounds, I see colours in my head.
@RobChappers My initial fuzzy feelings of well being evaporated when you reminded me that I am yet to buy Skyrim! :'( But still, for replying to me, you have now made my life 10x more awesome.
Brown sound: I think it is because Eddie plugged the amp into a variac, which you can think of as working kind of like a dimmer switch for AC power. So he would drop the voltage from 120V AC, which when it happens on the electrical grid they call a "brown out". Hence, "brown sound".
The Pickup output was very low on his guitars that were tested to do a relic so much so Fender thought they damaged the pickup taking it out of the Frankenstein gtr. I believe that added to the Brown Sound.
Walker Masuda Yeah i got some EMG 81 85 & NO dynamics can't get a descent vol swell. Now I had a some passive pups once w/the EXC by EMG or was it the After Burner on board pot that Really Was Awesome yet I still had dynamics. I wish I could remember what the EMG pot was???
Cool. Interesting you've hooked up yer Wamplers to a Boogie Express. I've just bought a Black '65, and I fire it through the same amp I've had for couple of years. GCC! (Great Gear Combo). Oh, and I can verify, that these pedals ARE really quiet
@scarsonmybed I think no guitar amp is truly flat. They should run trough a hifi amp if they wanted flat. But you do have a point about the express. It has a lot of low mid frequencies plus small cabs in general are mid heavier.
Chappers,How did you resist pulling some `rock` faces and `standing on the monitor- leering at the crowd ' poses when testing the Triple wreck`? That`s a seriously metal pedal-Thanks for the demo as always guys-
Eddie Van Halen initially used the term "Brown" sound to describe his brother Alex's drum tone...pleasingly "Woodlike." He then used the term for his amplified tone because he succeeded in getting a big, warm, not overly distorted/harsh sound. As he would say, a pleasing tone that did not sound like razor blades coming at you. Brown is organic, not cold and metallic sounding.
Dude!! You read the same guitar world article back in like '91. I remember him saying that exactly except he used the word "ears" instead of "you" (razorblades). He described Alex's snare to a big log. Nice and woody. Brings back memories. Thanks
did you get your socks from a supermarket chain with the letters a, d, s, and a in the title rob??? i only ask because i am wearing the exact same style at present :o
if your thinking of getting the triple wreck check out the rocktron zombie, most authentic rectifier pedal, people say they work better with valve amps but I don't know but I do know it's the best dual rec in a box type pedal
I HAVE SINCE TRIED IT WITH A SS AMP, IT DOES NOT SOUND AS GOOD, ROCKTRON DID SOME SORT OF MAGIC WIZARDRY THAT WHEN USED WITH A VALVE AMP IT GIVES A AUTHENTIC DUAL REC TONE, AND ONLY 40 BUCKS US, YES I SAID 40 BUCKS WHICH WOULD BE LIKE 25 POUNDS IN THE UK, AND THE TRIPLE WRECK IS DESIGNED TO ROUND LIKE A MIXTURE OF A DUAL REC AND A PEAVEY 5150, THAT CAME OUT OF BRIAN WAMPLERS MOUTH, 40 BUCKS VS 200+ BUCKS ? EASY CHOICE
Eddie on the "Brown Sound": - not sure how accurate this is. Eddie Van Halen refers to his guitar tone as the "brown sound." He says it's not yellow, pink, or blue. It's brown. All dirt and molasses. It's not just a tone, but also the incredible mastery of the guitar that Ed displays on each Van Halen track. Actually, the term "brown sound" was originally coined by the Van Halen brothers to describe the sound of Alex's snare. Ed has even said "I want my guitar to sound like Al's snare drum."
Brian Wampler literally "wrote the book" (see Amazon.com) on guitar effects. Thank God he started his own company. Best part is, they are high-quality, at a respectable price and there is no 3 year waiting list like for the stupid Ethos. By the time my name comes up on the list I'm not gonna want it anymore. Wampler maintains a consistent production level to meet the demand. The Leviathan and Ego-Compressor are great pedals too.
EVH used a variac in the early days to lower the line supply voltage and make his amps break up differently. Brown as in "brown-out" when the voltage in an area is lower than standard.
@willeng84 Shows you how much you know, first off just so you know dime used that warhead for cleans only, dime also never used krank even though that's damage plan so that's a moot point. I asked for pantera which he used amps from the early 80's and 90's almost 20-30 years ago. I'm also in the UK his amps are kinda rare over here. Anyway the point of me asking is to get chappers to do that "sound like" again cos that made good video in my opinion. He could demo new gear at the same time too
@RobChappers Hey man you going to be doing any more of those "sound like this artist for under a grand" videos. I really did enjoy them and i think a few people would want them back too ... do pantera first though :D :D :D
you guys should do another wampler video. i would love to hear what you think of the plexi-drive
+Darien Cruz Music They often do demoes of stuff they just started stocking and never demoed before... So I doubt you'll find a Plexi Drive demo any time soon
That Triple Wreck!!!! I tell you what...I call it the 'Brown Sound' because when I hear it I say "Shite" that's awesome!
loving the playing in this chappers
4 years ago chappers looked about 40 years older than he does now
There are some great pedals right there.
Also love "Typical Girl". Great song. These demos are all great. Best demos on the internet. All the different gear, all the funny stuff, the great playing, great combination of sounds with each piece of gear. And the audio/video-quality is fantastic also.
@sonofkikkoman I restarted after 11 levels of experimentation, I am now a level 10 Redguard Werewolf Warrior \m/
The Pinnacle's vintage setting was so nice
"Over the top? It's never enough." ---This made my day.
Rock on Chappers!
holey moley it just sounds FANTASTIC the balck 65, i just gotta have it wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's from Eddie driving his Marshalls at near brown out conditions with a variac. He used the Variac to lower the output of his amps so he could crank them and not kill people in the clubs with running his amp too loud. Brown Out = Brown Sound.

Awesome...20 minutes of work to go and a 20 minute video to fill it with
Hey! I do remember, you mentioned some wempler pedals compared to my real tube od... Is it pinnacl? I think triple wreck is a bit closer with its tone, but from "another side". It is more high gain'ish.
BTW:
Really good juicy tones here on other pedlas!
Eddie reduced the voltage on his amp. A brown out is when a power
grid momentarily reduces voltage. Hence brown sound.
Holy shit... that's the most normal Rob has ever looked. He should go back to this. None of the other looks have worked for him. This works.
Rob your fantastic player
Was about time for a new video!
no. it's simply trying to describe the overall feeling and tone of the sound using colour as a reference. Forget how the universe began!
Why aren't these videos getting more views!!
Nice pedal review! I need to play on these in person.
8 years ago and Lee looks exactly like today :-O
James May's shredder cousin
vintage to modern did it for me
Great video Rob! A chappers video day is a good day!
@Augenatic I am not a huge pantera fan, I was merely making the point that his gear is modern and VERY easy to acquire, we're not talking about finding a Dumble overdrive special for gods sake and yes your right, I heard him say he used solid states because he couldn't get enough gain from tubes and they were too warm, he liked alot of bass and treble and as everyone knows dumps the mids.

mmmm you got to love those mesa combo amps
nice playing rob
Dude thanks so much for this video. I'm looking at a Wampler Wreck thingy to replace my Radial Plexitube thats kinda at the end of its life. Love the plexitube but all the Wampler drives seem good.

The "Brown Sound" is so called because legend has it the tone achieved by VH would make you soil your pants! A-sheetz-my-drawers...
The hot wired has me interested. The pinnacle sounds like the last pedal that you'll ever own.
dude you are just awesome
@RobChappers My initial fuzzy feelings of well being evaporated when you reminded me that I am yet to buy Skyrim! :'( But still, for replying to me, you have now made my life 10x more awesome.
It's called "Brown Sound" because when Eddie heard it, he thought it sounded brown. Like we say "warm vs bright," he just said it sounded brown.
Brown sound: I think it is because Eddie plugged the amp into a variac, which you can think of as working kind of like a dimmer switch for AC power. So he would drop the voltage from 120V AC, which when it happens on the electrical grid they call a "brown out". Hence, "brown sound".
The term actually started by Al describing his snare drum.
IIzLeCookeh yeah that's what I understand.
The Pickup output was very low on his guitars that were tested to do a relic so much so Fender thought they damaged the pickup taking it out of the Frankenstein gtr. I believe that added to the Brown Sound.
I have the replica frankenstein pickup and yeah, it's fairly low. But that's where the big sound comes from, because it's not too compressed
@RobcC2809 Initiate feelings of well being, I have taken time away from my Skyrim addiction to respond to your comment ;-)
@RobChappers chappers, coud you demo a schecter omen extreme? i'm dying to see a serious review of that guitar!
Blackstar shirt for the win! Im hoping to get my very own ht5-rs sometime soon :)
Guys - the Ecstacy overdrive is a lovely pedal - worth a review if you get the chance.
I liked your hair like this Rob
i have boogie express 5/50 2x12... the big brother of the amp in the vid. and i looove how transparent it can be for pedals
i have the Wampler "Plexi-Drive". Thing is sick.
does it make you have to take a shit? like after eating one of those beef bean burritos from taco bell??
Hey Rob mate when will the next voting for the ML3 be ?
Cool. Interesting you've hooked up yer Wamplers to a Boogie Express. I've just bought a Black '65, and I fire it through the same amp I've had for couple of years.
GCC!
(Great Gear Combo).
Oh, and I can verify, that these pedals ARE really quiet
IM WAITING FOR THE VIDEO WITH THE TRIPLE WRECK VS THE TONE CITY MODEL B SINCE THEY HAVE THE SAME EXACT CONTROLS, CHAPPERS CAN YOU HELP US OUT
@scarsonmybed
I think no guitar amp is truly flat.
That`s a seriously metal pedal-Thanks for the demo as always guys-
@RobcC2809 Guys Mason uses both sides as individual drives BUT also combines the both at the same time
nice overdriven tones here 5:37
@RobChappers MY DAY IS COMPLETE !!!!! THANKS ROB :)
Eddie Van Halen initially used the term "Brown" sound to describe his brother Alex's drum tone...pleasingly "Woodlike." To me, they all have that transistor clipping sound. Yeck!
did you get your socks from a supermarket chain with the letters a, d, s, and a in the title rob??? i only ask because i am wearing the exact same style at present :o
What was that riff Chappers played at 13:05? Amazing!
Even though Rob is pretty famous, he is a great, down to earth, guy. I love you chappers!!! No Homo!
take a look at the Wampler triple wreck and the tone city model b, same controls, switch name is different
Smashing Pumpkins FTW!
Guys please make Lovepedal overdrives shootout, it would be really great ;)
if your thinking of getting the triple wreck check out the rocktron zombie, most authentic rectifier pedal, people say they work better with valve amps but I don't know but I do know it's the best dual rec in a box type pedal

I got a home made pedal who are extremely close to 'The Brown Sound' closer then the pedal in the video, but bout sound great:)
Rob if you can afford only one Wampler pedal, which would it be?
I wouldn't upset if Lee was never in another video.
He is SOOO boring
Eddie on the "Brown Sound": - not sure how accurate this is.

z1g2012 your the only one here that’s got the story right
The black 65 was my favorite. Do want
Great video! Thanks.
But please do a demo of SLOstortion and PLEXtortion pedal by Wampler too if You have them :)
Thanks a lot. :)
CHAPPERS: how long does filming one such demonstration take?
Brian Wampler literally "wrote the book" (see Amazon.com) on guitar effects. Thank God he started his own company. 8:50 very nice van halen tones
I have a Pinnacle. Best gain pedal I have ever used
More guitar reviews please!
I said you should check out Wampler pedals, i got some, they are REALLY good.
@everybodylovesgav High Five \m/ *Slap*
ugh I want them all.
@FergusVickersGuitar I would use the Escasty
Edward used colors to describe sound so I guess the color brown seemed to remind him of a warm tear your face off kind of sound.
EVH used a variac in the early days to lower the line supply voltage and make his amps break up differently. Brown as in "brown-out" when the voltage in an area is lower than standard.
@RobChappers ha thats exactly my character as well WIN
@willeng84 Shows you how much you know, first off just so you know dime used that warhead for cleans only, dime also never used krank even though that's damage plan so that's a moot point. I asked for pantera which he used amps from the early 80's and 90's almost 20-30 years ago.

He hid his baldness creatively
15:02 Always On the Run !!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Over the top?! It is never enough... Amen
@RobChappers What kind of character and lvl?
That poor les Paul being neglected :( great vid :) :L
My ears hear brown as more of a mid range, just a tad above dark and gothic. this is what I think when I hear sounds in comparison to colors.
Yay me. Few more demos on my channel (inc SloStortion)..... >>
@JamiesHereNow Actually the best one is the Plexidrive Carl Martin
@RobChappers Sounds about right :)
Could you guys do a "sound like clapton for under ..."
oh my days around 6 mins he plays kenny wayne shepherd!!! Chappers that is laddish!!
What does orange and silver signify then?
