That would legit be a game changer if they could do that. I hate having to drive to the airport, and either pay to park or get dropped off to take it. If they made it go downtown, there would be numerous busses that I could just take to the station, and be able to go all the way to o'hare just by public transportation. Now this is a pipedream - but what if after that they made it also go to downtown elkhart? It's not likely to happen, but would be awesome if it ever did
Thanks for the video. I feel this would be a great addition for South Bend to reuse the old Union Station. It would be great if the South Shore commuter trains also use it since it would provide a great spot for Amtrak passengers to transfer to the local trains that serve other Indiana towns. It also would work the other way as well allowing outlying Indiana towns being able to make easy connections with Amtrak. And who knows maybe someday Amtrak and VIA Rail in Canada May reestablish service to Toronto.
The building is surprisingly clean, well kept, with no graffiti or busted windows. I hope it remains that way after they begin to offer train rides to the ne'er do wells of Chicago. South bend has been through enough.
I still remember when Union Station was in use as a train depot. We met my cousins from Montreal there in 1964 and 1966. I seem to recall that Montreal-bound trains left South Bend in the middle of the night, around 1:00 AM. This is great news, though. Amtrak should have stepped in back in 1971 and taken over Union Station then, but instead opted to set up shop where South Shore trains terminated before they moved to the airport. The 20th Century Limited did not ordinarily stop at South Bend. I remember asking my parents what train they took in 1949 from Grand Central to South Bend and while they couldn't remember, it might have been the Commodore Vanderbilt.
We don't know that yet, but it's very likely to possibly be taken back by South Shore or possibly be turned into something else. We'll see. This is still exciting none the less because as I said in the video, downtown South Bend will be a hotspot and will be twice as photogenic as the current South Bend Amtrak Station.
@@southbend-chicago.railfan @southbend-chicago.r...: I heard some time back of reviving the train station that use to be in New Carlisle. I wonder what happened to that plan? Will it still be possible to restore the station stop in New Carlisle IN?
@Marcuswelby-nx2te We don't know that yet, but hopefully we will get updates soon. I'll do a follow up video when they start building the new platform.
Great job! What a great future just around the bend. I'm 80. Aug. 15, 2024. St. Joseph, MO, USA
Best of luck on your ambitious plans...👍👍from MN 🥶 railfan 70 yrs
I'm too hoping the South Shore Line can also get back into downtown South Bend and jointly use the Union Station that would also serve Amtrak.

@johnchamberd8528: Those plans would really be great and sure hope they all happen soon.
@@albertcarello619Nothing in South Bend happens soon. Or, conversely, if you think 30 years is soon, then, yes… it will happen soon.
@@kennethandrysiak413030 years ? Hardly soon enough.

I do, too, man.
I will be the Railfan's hot spot when Virtual Railfan installs one of their live feed cameras. The closet is in Elkhart.

I actually railfan not to far, in New Carlisle. But what would they do with the current station if they decide to move there?

@@CNTrainMan5762 Well I’ll tell you this.. If the south shore decides to reuse the station again, it’ll save a lot of money!
@@southbend-chicago.railfan Indeed.
@@southbend-chicago.railfan I think the station may still remain as a local station stop in addition to having the new downtown station.

Cool how ever you might get mugged there
It might be a little treacherous, especially at night.
@Marcuswelby-nx2te It will still be an awesome place to watch trains none the less.
What is the possible time table for this happening?
