Detailed Rivian R1S Quad Review - Everything You Need to Know Before Buying w/ Real Owner

- I know this one is 39 mins, but we have a lot to say on the actual production Rivian R1S. In this detailed video, we come at it unbiasedly and with a lot of EV SUV reviews under our belt. Grateful if you take a moment out of your day to check out our content. I actually shot over an hour of content, and frankly cut out some of my negative driving impression parts. I still think you will get the vibe of this new SUV, which in many ways will be a class leader.
We understand that the Rivian R1S is not new anymore, but let's face it a press car ain't the same as one that was actually delivered to a customer. We sure appreciated Aaron sharing his trials on purchasing this 2023 Rivian R1S, which took over two years. As Aaron states it, two canceled delivery days, picking the R1S up at a local park, and even at one point having the order canceled. This was all news to me when it comes to a Rivian R1S. Overall, I do speak highly of the Rivian R1S, especially this production version. Rivian has definitely solved some of the build quality issues on the rear with this R1S, and overall the build quality is some of the best I've seen in the EV category. It's even on par with the best from Porsche, dar I say!
As a Tesla Model X P100D owner since 2019, I speak candidly about the things I like about the Rivian R1S which mostly includes the interior. Performance, autonomous driving, looks, and overall driving-wise, I still prefer the Model X. But, interior-wise and considering all the "fun adventuring nods" that Rivian gives you, like the PSI machine, 120 volt, electric front truck (okay not interior), and two rows of folding seats, it's packed with functionality. Let's also not forget the boom box, flashlight, double pano roof, incredible ash wood interior trim, and amazing vegan leather seats, god I can go on.
Now, I know that the new Model X and S have far better interiors than my 2016 P100D, but I still give the nod to the Rivian R1S in its interior features and overall design. Having said that, check out my Model S Plaid review which should have so many more views than it does sadly. We did a fair job of covering that interior.
Overall, we really hope you enjoy our Rivian R1S review. I want to thank Bryan and Aaron for joining me and I sure hope you enjoy the content. I got eaten alive by mosquitoes that morning, so hope it was worth it! I'm still itching from it!

I haven't been able to get an answer on the sound quality of the new system. Realizing that it is incredibly subjective, but I'd love to know opinions from people that have actually heard it in the R1S. Mine is due in a month or so and I was very not impressed by the meridian so much so that I was really turned off to the R1S. Changing to a new system is a winning idea but I still can't find opinions on it. Any opinion from an actual owner or one that has heard it is more than welcomed.

From my perspective, the Meridian system offers a warmer sound signature. The bass and mid-range are robust, creating a rich auditory experience. I did notice that the mids could get a bit muddled initially, but after tweaking the equalizer settings, the Meridian really came alive. The audio felt fuller, like being immersed in a sound blanket, which is a quality some music lovers would certainly appreciate.
In contrast, Rivian's in-house sound system delivers a crisper sound. It's clean and detailed, providing a sharpness that allows individual instrument lines to shine through. It may not have the fullness of the Meridian, but it offers its own unique auditory experience that is quite satisfying.
It's important to remember that neither system is inherently better or worse - they each offer different listening experiences. The best choice between the two would depend on your personal sound preferences. If you prefer your music to have a warmer, fuller tone, you might lean towards the Meridian system after proper equalizer adjustment. However, if you appreciate a more detailed and crisp sound profile, Rivian's in-house system might be the one for you.

@@aaronharstine881 One more follow up if you don't mind.... Is the bass full on the new system? Crisper systems usually have fuller bass. Would you describe it as the bass "hits" or that it's just there. Or another way? I have an HK system now and love the way it sounds and really hope the Rivian system is comparable.
@@jasonsimon3204 i like it more than the Harman Kardon system in my Polestar 2, both the Meridian and Rivian in-house systems in the R1S offer a pleasing experience. Both have impressive bass that’s not only present but I would say tighter in the Rivian system, which leads to a well-defined and controlled low-end response. The sound signature of Rivian's in-house system in the R1S closely mirrors the audio profile of Apple's newest HomePod, offering a similar clarity and balance in sound but of course much louder.
We live in IL so our delivery was smooth! They actually delivered the car to our house. The whole process took 2 weeks from starts to finish. It was so bizarre to just do everything online.
In the middle row under the small temp control display is another 120v plug-in, in case you didn't know.

Nice review, ty I have one on order. They tell me delivery in 2024. Cool, will give me time to save$. I love my MYLR i recently bought, still a head turner and excellent experience driving it. I would probably go for the model X when the time is right. I don't think will ever be dull, boring, or go out of style.
150 miles of range??? No. Before you talk about a vehicle, you may want to know a bit more about it. Rivian estimates mileage pretty accurately- inclement weather and very cold/very hot weather can sap range, but not to that extent
Thanks Erin for the comment. While that is an extreme example, I stand by what I said. With 835 HP and 900 torque, you absolutely could burn that battery down quickly. I did say 270-280 range should be consistent in the quad spec, with normal AC running and some light spirited driving, such as running 79 on the highway .
19:09 I was able to fit my golf bag and the folded push cart into that frunk. It is huge! Told the Rivian guy they need to advertise that. Tried it (R1S) out at the Franklin service center. Looks like they are doing deliveries there now.
San Jose CA is the same, I had to go to a park to do my demo ride.
Maybe vehicle owner got different delivery confirmation email instructions than we did to account for his delivery day "nightmare"? "Please bring the following to your delivery appointment: All registrants must be present along with their valid driver’s licenses. If you have a co-registrant, please ensure they are at the delivery appointment as well."

You could make a video of just the montage and I would have watched it in loop 😍. Constructive criticism; it was going great and I was thoroughly enjoying the quality, when it felt cut abruptly and short.

Serious there's a 120 volt sitting right between the front two seats. You don't have to run a huge extension cord! 11:34 lol
There are a ton of these now in my area in NY. In the back lot of our building i see at least 5 per day. I asked one lady about it and she said she wanted the new Range Rover and she got tired of waiting and seemed very happy with her Rivian.
They’re still rare around here my friend, but I think with time these will be very popular. Rivian just needs to get them to their customers now, believe the orders are there.

There is also a storage space under the front of the drivers seat i think.

If you own a Rivian do not drive in conserve mode unless you actually need to conserve the battery to make it home or a charger. It will cause very uneven tire wear if done often.
cant decide if i wanna get this or the X Plaid.. just hate that this has 7 seats and the X has 6.. i want a 5 seater!!
Not sure what the buyer's experience is related to. But 5 months later...non-issue for me when I get my R1S

Great, in-depth video. I learned a lot! I am tired of the Tesla MY and MX, so I have an R1S reservation. Back in the day, my Model X was one of the cars valets wanted parked in front of their hotel instead of in the parking garage. Super cool........at the time.
Right, I agree Tesla has lost some of its brand luster, and I own two so I say that unbiased. A lot of that is from Elon being Elon sadly, much as I love the man. Their products are still best of breed in many ways. Still, I love my Model X P100D, even at 83k miles its the car I want to daily to this day.
How is the interior of the S better than the T when it is identical front seats forward.

How about a rooftop tent? Will it hold 500+lbs?
The Rivian one crossbars hold a static weight of 600lbs.
anyone who thinks EV's are too quiet for the occupants or drivers... just, wow. Noise, and NVH is extraordiniarly bad for the human body in direct ways to the cardiac muscle itself, and to the all the systems related including the brain. Your heart will literally thank u for a quiet car. I dn't even like EV's generally for a couple reasons, namely my use case for cars and road trips, but due to the quiet and due to the low maintenance or low incidence of serious repair needs vs ICE, i love them in a sense, and due to the quiet, i will consider them in future (and i'm a die hard ICE person, bcuz i'm 54 y.o. and like no muss no fuss backcountry travel.

get that trunk gap to the service center if you see that on delivery- they fixed mine which had that on one side, and now its flush. I mean perfectly flush. Should've been manufactured that way, but at least they put it right for free

I have FSD in my Tesla and i never use it. My wife does and she loves it. But i just prefer to drive myself.

Dual motor will not likely be as reliable as the quad motor as evidenced by the warranty coverage on the dual motor. Also, unlike the quad motor, which has the conserve move, the dual motor does not. This likely means that the controller is constantly engaging and disengaging one of the two axles which will likely lead to more wear and tear than the quad.
The recent recalls and owner dissatisfaction with customer service keep me away…
This owner is not good at following instructions on process of ordering...i did everything correctly. The portal stated clearly all person name on the registration need to be present to sign.

the owner is a 🤡. SMH no dealership would ever deliver/ let you drive off a vehicle without all registrants present in person.
Appreciate you sharing. Aaron is a very busy guy, travels a lot. It’s just the way it went down, and since I was there Monday when he flew back into town just for this, and then they would not release the car due to paperwork and their dealer status and how it all worked, and then having the co signer present next day which in fairness they did not mention while I was there either, it was just a story we wanted to tell.
I spoke with the Rivian’s rep myself that day, for a while we talked as he still showed us the car and I filmed some stories on IG - even he admitted point blank it is strange times, and they’re working on it. They could only do so much due to their current status without a license. Do want to make clear to anyone reading all were very nice people in the Franklin service center.

Obviously you know him personally but email Rivian sends our literary says "All registrants must be present along with their valid driver’s licenses. If you have a co-registrant, please ensure they are at the delivery appointment as well." While i understand it must have been inconvenient but one still have to take some responsibility for not reading the instructions thoroughly instead of blasting a company online (doesn't matter its a small business or a big one)
@@mramritsingh1 Hey, I appreciate your input. However, just to clarify, I didn’t receive a delivery instruction email until the third attempt at delivery. This was the first time I was made aware of such requirements. Also, I’ve purchased vehicles before and have never encountered a co-signer or co-registrant requirement. It’s important to have all the facts before making assumptions. Thanks for engaging! 😊
A car is meant to be driven and enjoyed as such. Stop thinking of it as your tech hub or living room. Who cares about watching Netflix in a car, when I have a much better television set up in my living room?

The model X is not sexy nor sleek. U need exposure to either the car world generally or design world. Seriously, shaking my head. Model X is the least sexy electric car of all, tho Tesla's generally are the least sexy EV's, unfortunately.
The hp means nothing when the top speed is limited to 112mph 🙄
