Oh, and Bill playing ACOUSTIC DRUMS! I like some of the Simmons Electric stuff and all, but this is how old Bartley Buttsford should be heard. A log drum and scaled back acoustic kit- wish he had toured w/ ABWH like this. It would sound far less dated.
I Wish I Would Have Known About Them playing in Concert when they were playing there Album (ABWH) !!!!!! Unfortunately I didn’t know about that Album/CD until the early 90’s which was given to me (CD version) by a co-worker and I Still Have To This Day ! I Completely Love This Album/CD to Death !!! What A Great Masterpiece ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Rick Wakeman has been my biggest influence and inspiration for about 30 years. Back in the 80's a girlfriend of mine made me an incredibly large keyboard scarf. I was fortunate enough to meet Rick several times. During one of our meetings I gave him that scarf. I could be wrong but I think he's actually wearing it on this video! If so, that's pretty damn cool. Thank you Rick and Yes. Their music means more to me than they will ever know.
Strange! After that big intro by Michael Douglas I was at first let down by what seemed like the beginning of a Jazzy-Folk Fusion Yes performance medley, that usually sends me running...but I enjoyed it after all! Thanks!
brudford played the same little percussion insterment..on neal jack n me a live king crimson tour...abwh is some of jons best work.............jon for supreme being
found this video via this forgotten-yesterdays.com/dates.asp?ftype=1&qdec=1990&qdateid=2990 We lately found a VHS videotape with this Aids event of Arista from 1990, but without that performance. But the speech of Micheal Douglas reminds me of that benefit concert. Fantastic stuff.
My favorite line-up!!! But only miss Squire in the line-up and will be the perfect fit for me. Jon voice is and is always incredible. Love Sweet Dreams and Roundabout renditions here. Wow a gem!
fantastic news. Audio of any ABWH concert would be a great thing. During the hurricane I listened to 7.29.89 ABWH premiere w "Quartet" live, even tho sound quality was lacking, it was a magical thing to hear. (originally was thinking of Pro VIDEO w Tony Levin, one needs to see the light of release) Now i must go find the Live at the NEC!!
I saw them for this tour in 1989. They had recorded an album and wanted to release it and tour under the name of Yes but Chris Squire and Alan White had a problem with that so they went under the name Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe.
Squire is great, but if you have to replace him, Tony played with Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Buddy Rich, Liquid Tension Experiment, Andy Summers, Tracy Chapman, Joan Armarading, and on and on. He wore modified drum sticks called "Funk Fingers" because he doesn't often use a pick, and Yes tunes have that sharp attack.
in answer to your other questions, levin played on the abwh album and those sticks actually called funk fingers were inspired by his work on gabriel's big time. to get a more percussive bass sound levin did the fingerings and the drummer played sticks on the strings.
@flashchrome I agree with the last part. Levin and Squire are in the right places. Here in Brazil we say "Each one in your own square" :D Nice talk to you. Every time we listen a different opinion with a mind open we're doing what that band says: "don't surround yourself with yourself". ;)
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe "Live At The NEC" was released on July 2nd of this year. Go to the Gonzo Multimedia Group website to order it, or simply type it in to Google to get the info. Sounds pretty good to me, could use a stronger rhythm section mix, though.
It will be great to know whe was this gig..still God bless claycorn for sharing this vid and let me tell u that really enojoyed!! long live to the Yes music!!
@flashchrome No, I do mean "better". Don't get me wrong, I love Squire, but Tony has played with all the greatest progressive bands. He is more technical and complete. I agree with you: "Music is not that easy to compete in", but is not impossibel or wrong say who's better player.
Very rare to see Tony Levin with them. It is a pity that they have used footage with Jeff Berlin for the official dvd release. Tony would have been much better - despite that Jeff is a master bass player too - but Tony has more suitable style and sound for this kind of music.
I can maybe relate. There are some songs I never tried to learn, because it seems 'decoding' and playing them takes away some of the magic. - Not that I'm much good at gtr. In my hands a song loses most of its magic anyway. But maybe it's a bit like occasionally visiting a place vs actually living there.
@spiderbass65 You might be able to replace squire on bass, but vocally there's a big difference between Yes with him and without him. When you listen to something on Drama with harmonies, it sounds like yes, and that's Chris. It's kinda like when Walsh left Kansas, they still sounded like Kansas, because Steinhardt was still there. When Robbie left, they sounded, vocally, like Foreigner. With that said, this was a great album and tour.
@Metsengneizer. You supposedly mean differnt than Squire. Music is not that easy to compete in. Tony and Crhis has very differnt styles and I wouldn't even want to dare compare them even if comparing is pointless.
LOL - Putting the great performance aside, Wakeman looks ridiculous with that hair and outfit! But I'm sure it wasn't thought of that negatively way back in 1989.
Surprised that 'in the Big Dream' got applause (a quarter of what the Old Warhorse got but still). 7:15 'Laa-ka'... yeah! Somehow that moment made me wish Bruford's snare sound had that same kick it has on the original. Wished the full band had kicked in during Br. of Mine. Was this arrangment/medley unique to this performance? ABWH's last time playing live according to what I read.
Is that the one from Jones Beach that SandSpock33 was referring to? That was a great concert and I loved Rick Wakeman's solo at that concert. Someone posted that solo but it started midway through and went into the next song. I want to get that solo by itself ... but would love the whole concert!!!
machinewrecker Adrian Belew was the co-guitarist/vocalist of King Crimson from 1981-2003, Tony Levin the bassist. It is Tony Levin without a doubt. Check out any video of Tony playing with Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Liquid Tension Experiment or any number of his own bands right here on RUclips for proof.
really? a full ABWH concert? I doubt it. There were 3 live songs from Birmingham on the ABWH 2cd remaster. the Best to date is 8.10.89 Jones Beach, NY. The video cord was kicked out in the 'communion' section of CTTEdge, otherwise, that's the best ABWH w Tony Levin on video.
@Metsengneizer. Well, I still wouldn't say better. That is your personal preference rather than fact. To me, comparing or stating better / worse than, is like having two guitars, one classical and one western/folk and saying the western one sounds better. No it doesn't, it sounds different. I, personally wouldn't have Tony in Yes, because he wouldn't have a clue to what to do there, and I would never, ever have chris in Liquid Tension or as a performer with Peter Gabriel to name obviousness:)
Was Levin always with ABWH? And isn't he Gabriels bassist too? Is he wearing really long clothes pins on his fingers, because if they are they sound great. Never a really big fan of ABWH because I am a huge Squire fan.
Alright! Bill Bruford is playing REAL drums here!, not those tacky-sounding awful electronic things he was battering on the other ABWH video and the Yes "Onion" tour.
@Avooc Oh do get a life. It's actually a perfectly good vocal sound and if you really think that was "major feedback" then you should try leaving the house a little more. Possibly one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever seen on RUclips, and that's saying a lot...
NastyGreaser you are a fool. It's one thing to learn to play a part, and another thing to write it. I can quote Shakespear. Now go ahead and give me the buisiness, like you did with that other bloke.....heh heh...
When my day comes, and I am at the pearly gates, the voice out of Gods mouth will be the voice of Jon Anderson.
Great arrangement for 'Sweet Dreams' excellent guitar work from Mr Howe
This is live in NYC at Radio City Music Hall, ARISTA RECORDS ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
So great to see Bill back in the saddle with these guys. The chemistry makes it meant to be.
GREAT GREAT GREAT!!! Rare Vid and a real pleasure for every Yes fan! Thanks a lot!
Rick Wakeman has been my biggest influence and inspiration for about 30 years. Back in the 80's a girlfriend of mine made me an incredibly large keyboard scarf. These are the father of the music ¡¡¡¡¡¿
Yes for never and ever ¡¡¡¡
Strange! After that big intro by Michael Douglas I was at first let down by what seemed like the beginning of a Jazzy-Folk Fusion Yes performance medley, that usually sends me running...but I enjoyed it after all! Thanks!
Jon,you are angelic.Your voice, your soul, your being. You were meant to be. I know this is late in coming but I hope you get to see my comment.
brudford played the same little percussion insterment..on neal jack n me a live king crimson tour...abwh is some of jons best work.............jon for supreme being
Levin covering squire - a novel approach! It definitely works for this incarnation of Yes!
some of there best work...brudford..and levin
kick ass ...thanks for posting
Wow....never seen this til this moment. Loving it!
It is nice to hear after all these years.
Awesome! i can't believe I missed this when it was live!
Bill Bruford was the best drummer and arranger for Yes and King Crimson too. Bless him.
Thanks for posting I never saw this before!
80's hair! YES!
Thanks so much for adding this gem of a medley. BoM kills and always will.
No way!!! That is the coolest thing I've ever heard!
So nice to see Tony Levin with them!
@SandSpock33
They did an acoustic version of Sweet Deams on the ABWH tour around 15 times between 1989 & 1990. I saw them do it at MSG in NYC 1990.
A date and location is always nice. With Michael Douglas introducing them, it seems like some sort of awards show or something.
Funk-Fingered ROUNDABOUT!!!!
found this video via this forgotten-yesterdays.com/dates.asp?ftype=1&qdec=1990&qdateid=2990
We lately found a VHS videotape with this Aids event of Arista from 1990, but without that performance. But the speech of Micheal Douglas reminds me of that benefit concert. Fantastic stuff.

Brother of mine is my fav track of that album
Goddam fingers , Star! What do you know about that?!
the arrangement for Sweet dreams was awesome
that was great! Thnx!
Arista Concert was March 1990.
That was a beautiful rendition of Roundabout
Rick's hair is sooooo funny:-)
I agree, Tasia! I like Yes a lot, but I saw them twice because of that rhythm section.
fantastic news.
I'm very happy to see this vid
AWESOME!!! I think the vocals sound better than ever-- Levin ROCKS!!
in case anyone is still wondering, i think this is a Arista label event.
I saw them for this tour in 1989. They had recorded an album and wanted to release it and tour under the name of Yes but Chris Squire and Alan White had a problem with that so they went under the name Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe.
Sweet Dreams on Yesterdays....anywhere else?
they are called bass fingers and he invented them. he played most of the abwh tour.

THE BEST BAND ALL OVER THE TIMES ¡¡¡¡
It's funny. I always thought that Jon Anderson resembled Michael Douglas. What a coincidence that he would introduce Yes.
Michael Douglas: Yes fan. Who would have thought Gordon Gecko had so much sensitivity?
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe "Live At The NEC" was released on July 2nd of this year. Go to the Gonzo Multimedia Group website to order it, or simply type it in to Google to get the info. Sounds pretty good to me, could use a stronger rhythm section mix, though.
As much as I love him, what was he thinking?
It will be great to know whe was this gig..still God bless claycorn for sharing this vid and let me tell u that really enojoyed!! long live to the Yes music!!
Gonzo Multimedia is putting out a whole 3 disc set of ABWH live w/ Levin, so that should be cool to hear.
I like Bill's Converses.
@flashchrome No, I do mean "better". Don't get me wrong, I love Squire, but Tony has played with all the greatest progressive bands. He is more technical and complete. I agree with you: "Music is not that easy to compete in", but is not impossibel or wrong say who's better player.
I like Wakey's hair and Bruford pants. I like them a lot.
Funk fingers!
As to why Rick didn't use the moog for one of the most iconic synth fills is beyond me.
more "hammond" than anything...
Very rare to see Tony Levin with them. It is a pity that they have used footage with Jeff Berlin for the official dvd release. Tony would have been much better - despite that Jeff is a master bass player too - but Tony has more suitable style and sound for this kind of music.

How is it possible I've not seen this before? Wow.

Still have a luv for YES in any form...
Surprised that 'in the Big Dream' got applause (a quarter of what the Old Warhorse got but still).

Tony Levin on bass. Great work with those drumsticks!
Tony Levin
MMG6161 I think you're right.

Yes, I know. Just got my names mixed up, I guess.
machinewrecker Nothing to worry about, happens all the time. Just delete or edit the original comment and people won't continue to comment on it.
A.M.A's 1990 or so
haha yes very rare thanks

Why does Wakeman look like Tony Kaye?
@Metsengneizer. Well, I still wouldn't say better. That is your personal preference rather than fact. To me, comparing or stating better / worse than, is like having two guitars, one classical and one western/folk and saying the western one sounds better. No it doesn't, it sounds different. @whiterobin He really is! Although, to be fair, it was 20 years ago.
PS I mean an audio 3 disc set, not a video one. Perhaps that is the cause of your disbelief? ;)
Tony Levin is a great bass player. He is better than Squire.
what show is this and its interesting how simple thier set up is here , bruford a basic drumset and wakeman is not loaded up with keyboards
La banda debería llamarse ABWHL... ahí atrás hay una pared sonora llamada Levin.. eh?
Was Levin always with ABWH? And isn't he Gabriels bassist too? Is he wearing really long clothes pins on his fingers, because if they are they sound great. Never a really big fan of ABWH because I am a huge Squire fan.
Love these guys forever. But Rick, your hair looks ridiculous. ..ha ha ha ha ha
Can anyone tell me which is the song in the middle of the medley? I know sweet dreams and roundabout, but what do they sing inbetween them?
Brother of Mine Pt 1: In The Big Dream
The audio CD's released last year were a U.K. date. Sorry!
@hanscarter you mean chris squire had the problem.....
I've never seen this before. What show is this from?!
Alright! Bill Bruford is playing REAL drums here!, not those tacky-sounding awful electronic things he was battering on the other ABWH video and the Yes "Onion" tour.
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe. And Tony Levin. And someone else. And another guy. :D
julian colbeck on keys and milton mcdonald on guitar too
Opinions are like assholes...everybi=ody has one! And it also seems that assholes like their own opinions!(I don't though)
@Avooc Oh do get a life. It's actually a perfectly good vocal sound and if you really think that was "major feedback" then you should try leaving the house a little more. Possibly one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever seen on RUclips, and that's saying a lot...

What year?
+theonemodifier March 1990, just before their legendary concert at Madison Square Garden!
+simonal1989 thanks
Great performance, but geez this mix is terrible! Steve's guitar can barely be heard on Roundabout.
