BEWARE! FMF 4.1 RCT Exhaust System - Maybe its just me? My FMF nightmare!

  • Well, I never expected this! I am a long time, 25 years + FMF exhaust buyer and racer, and this version of the exhaust might have just changed my mind. What should have been a very simple disassembly turned out to be a garage nightmare! That stock muffler packing material is crazy. It is wrapped in plastic to hold it together, but of course when removing the exhaust it tears and the packing breaks loose never to go back in again! And as I point out, its just not a real user friendly exhaust to take apart and re-pack, and I have never even had this exhaust on my bike. Very sad. Please FMF make an exhaust that does not require you to be a factory mechanic to re-pack and maintain. Anyway, for those thinking of purchasing one of these systems, or if you have one and are thinking about re-packing it, beware of some of the pitfalls I point out here. Maybe its just me, but I am pretty good with a wrench! This challenged me for sure. BEWARE!

PC fan but I will say a torx fastener is a superior design over hex.

I don't disagree, they just need to become the standard. I guess they are starting to be.
      Thanks!

Probably just me, but I've stripped out torx fastners. Never had that problem with hex.

I just repacked mine today. I don't really have a frame of reference but didn't have any particular issues taking it apart. My primary complaint would be that it is too loud and from what I've heard it's impossible to silence. I think it sounds sweet but my neighbors probably don't when I'm ripping around in the AM, lol.

I found taping the packing tight and putting it in first then the back it goes easy. The spark arrestor I don't put back in until it's back on the bike. If I even use it. I can pull one apart repack it and put it back together in less than 20-25mins. The race packing is the easiest to work with.

Im a Yoshi guy, stick to Yoshimura, comes beautiful from the oackage with no problems! And it uses the hex, andba screw for the baffle!

That’s not much of a fancy tool. Pretty much standard in most tool boxes. I would much rather have a torx over allen.

I don't disagree. We just need more things to come with them as well. I am all in!
