- As this clip seems to have disappeared from RUclips, here it is!!
This clip is an excerpt from The Norman Gunston Show, series 1, episode 7. Originally aired July 1975 on ABC Australia. Приколы
I was doing second camera ... on Cheech And Chong, over Gary's shoulder. I was crying so much with laughter as he sent them up. It's a shame they cut out the bit about "are you going muff diving on the Barrier Reef while your here?" That broke up Cheech and Chong. They couldn't believe Norman.
Great experience!
Gunston's irreverent humour shocked even the most broad minded people. McDonald hid behind his persona and got away with murder because of it. Comic genius
Classic, thanx for sharing, what a great job you landed !
David Westray thanks mate!
What did Gary think of their 'Near Hash' lol... ?
I bet thats not all they cut out.... I also imagine a lot of 2nd camera footage was from the shaking of you laughing......;)
Great Story ! !
Norman Gunston was one of, if not the, biggest influences on my life as an Aussie kid! What a gem!
You could certainly do a LOT worse.
The public influences on kids these days is very commendable.
I preferred Joe Bjelke-Peterson myself
Thank god we were blessed with the Little Aussie Bleeder!
Garry McDonald defined the 1970s in Australia. At least, the Australia I knew…
I love that they get the Aussie humour. So many Americans think we are seriously having a go at them but we just love to take the piss.
Norman Gunston (in my estimation) was the funniest and most intelligient comedian/actor that Australia ever produced (I say that as a Pomm). It was extremely sad that he stopped doing the interviews such as this one. I used to roar laughing at them. To this day I have never found anyone as funny as he used to be. He had a talent that no one has ever been able to copy.
He turns Cheech & Chong into straight men.
That's funny on so many levels... ;)
Funny af
Gary Macdonald as Norman Gunston gave Cheech and Chong the greatest run for their money they would ever get.
Sasha Baron Cohans characters Ali G n Borat have got to be heavily influenced by Gary's "Norman Gunston".
He is a comedic genius.
Zach Galifinakis, Will Ferell, Rhys Darby, Brett Kennedy, Jemaine Clement. That's all I can think of now but I'm sure the list is a lot longer.
👍🤣😂
He may have beenInfluenced by Gary's Norman Gunston ,but he never bettered him.
Loved watching Norman when I was a kid growing up hilarious spot on timing.
Morris Gleitzman was his writer in this era. I once read an interview with Gleitzman where he talks about how he and McDonald would forensically workshop upcoming interviewees likely responses to questions and they would script perfect replies. Gary would learn all the responses. But then he has the amazing comic timing…
Dead set, Morris Gleitzman as in the children's book writer. Unbelievable.
@@Alpha_7227 yes, the kids author.
Love Norman. Had forgotten how sharp he was.
This Man is a National Aussie Comedy Treasure.
He's so much funnier than anyone he interviews
Frank zappa was funny. He invited Norman to play harmonica on stage.
God ,Norman is a legend haven't watched this in years .I love his Ali and Guns and Roses interview too
He was fabulous in Mother and Son he was the only Little Aussie Bleeder 😎🇦🇺
Norman is the funniest interviewer .. still males me laugh
Males make me laugh tooth 😆
"Up the mighty Blues" - hwock spit
saw Cheech And Chong live on that tour in 1975 they were so dam funny
The interview of Sally Struthers. Pure gold.
God, he was a fabulous Comedian!
Ever the one and only Norman Gunston ,.
Great to see these. Thanks mate.
Cool how Cheech knew about Vegemite
His name is Richard. Youre welcome
Dear Norman, loved his work. Miss his style of comedy and him. Used to time my joints to, just before he was on.
Gary was so quick..........a great performer.
Go The Mighty Blues.......the interview just got better when l heard those poetic words
Having a toke during a interview pure gold.
@bofursgun maybe a Cone ?
Which the ABC would have aired. haha
Near hash like the near beer there drinking
Only during the 1970s could that happen.
Gunston legend
I don't know how many times I've watched this over the last few decades, but try as I might, I still can't be silent watching this!
These were classic comedy clips
The best one I remeber was when he interviewed Huey Lewis for a gardening magazine.
!
I write down Normans name every election on the ballad and give it a tick,,,One day Mate!
Try putting it on the 'ballot'. 😉😊😇
No offence intended, just siezing the moment.
Australia will never laugh again
Little Aussie Bleeder with the dudes
I'm late here, but this is killing me 🤣 so funny and wholesome ♥️
Thanks for the reminder ♥️♥️😘
When he started hocking loogies I laughed so hard.
Love your work.want to see more.
Norman Gunston went to the same school as my ex. Aparently they had one teacher if he caught you eating lollies would confiscate them, and then eat them all in front of the kids. So Norman got one of those hard lollies that had a sherbet filled center, he cut it open and replaced the center with citric acid wrapped back up and left it on the teachers desk, well it worked. The preacher was furious and asked the class who the culprit was, nobody came forward so the whole class was put on detention for a month. True story. I believe the school was Cranbrook in sydney.
Hilarious 😂
Never seen this bloke before. I’m welsh but my grandad was from oz. I love Cheech and Chong especially in the van made of weed
Gary McDonald went to school with my ex at ' Cranbrook High' Sydney. I believe Norman Gunston turned up and played a prank on the teacher which ended up with the whole class being kept in after school for a month. Because none of the kids would dog him in... I can tell you what he did if you would like........
Did you get it this time?
Truthful
Loved norman . He was so funny . People never knew what he was going to come out with .
Watching Norman when I was a kid was the best all time aussie legend I miss that era so much
Gunstun us a legend
Watching Cheech Moran laugh did me in.
I love how these international stars go through a process of wondering WFT they just got themselves into
I never noticed this before but.........
"Norman Gunston"
looks, sounds and acts just like
"George Mcfly" from back to the future.
Think Mcfly think!!!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I remember when Muhammed Ali arrived at Sydney Airport and 'Bodgey Norm' was there (blotting paper on all his shaving cuts and all - slicked down Californian Poppy comb-over) in the media crush with his big microphone. Coming to the fore (his big microphone outstretched in Ali's face), Bodgey Norm fired off a few inane questions. Ali studied him for a few seconds, with a bemused look on his face, then said, *"Are you for real, man?!"* It was classic!
Yeah there all loving it good times man
Absolute amazing comedy. Norman took the piss out of them..
+brian critchley not quite....
+Scott Awaywithit Well mostly. Sally Stuthers I believe was right on to him but naturally it took time to work it out, what made Norman so special was his surprise attack, simply no one knew what to make of him, to me he was a comedy prodigy ...
Ah Norman. You lad you!
Thè interview with jeff fenech is gold.
My mind wasn't opened to Cheech and Chong until I heard their comedy records from their peak time.
Yes I laughed and would again laugh
Humour AkA the 2 Cavelliers.
I wanted to hear more of that, really miss the comedy of days gone by, wonder if these 2 still perform?
They do. They've been touring in the USA anyway.
Wish the fkrs would come back downunder.😎
@@sandgroperwookiee65 Dutton wouldn't let them in the country???? Australia was great before this age of sycophants running our country!?
Fantastic!
Love It!!
Sadly the younger generation will never appreciate this
'Comedy' these days relies on vulgarity, belittling others and shouting.
Doesn't require any form of 'talent' or 'intelligence' that a typical school yard bully doesn't possess.
Happy 70th Cheech
Yeah. Been fun man. Thanks for the laughs
Long long before Sacha 😃
Norman Gunston may have said 'Up the mighty blues' BUT Graeme Kennedy was a Saints supporter full on.
3:12 "where'd this guy come from man?"
...."cat"
@@ScareFearTerror exacery .. where'd this cat come from man ? Real ghetto talk...
Corrimal 😂
@@waynejdiversi3084 Or possibly Figtree.
@@stupendous1068 I was pretty sure it was Corrimal, but could be swayed.
OMG I love him!😂
Miss this humour. Hip humour 😆
Gary was the best ! Norman Gunston
Graham Kennedy who
Bubble and squeak...oh Norman!
Whoops, I meant a BEX 😁🐨🦘
gold
TV days where the reporter supplies the drugs (Beks powder!) lol Never see that again lol.
BEX powders. Made in Queensland. Aspirin, Phenacetin & Codeine. Caused many renal failures until removed from the market. Competitor was “Vincent Powders” - coloured pink. Ppl thought “safer than Bex”.
@@robertkopp873 Bex is better!
Good times😁!
What happened to Bex, my neighbours were really into them, most took about 3 a day. Have a Bex and a lay down was the slogan.
'A cup of tea, a Bex and a quick lie-down' got so many Aussie housewives through the 50s and 60s, whilst their US counterparts resorted to Valium and vodka.
Bex was subsequently found to be carcinogenic - or some such, 'hazardous to health' anyhow - and banned in the early 1970s (I think).
Great for hangovers. Took 4-5 a week.
Gary is great.
@IWrocker here's another classic hahaha
Steven Toast has aged remarkably well
RC cola, there's a blast from the past..
The RC Cola girl. 👍👍👍
Whatever was happening in the background was just as WTF as the interview itself. @4:29 Holy hell, is that John McAfee?
The contrast between his rapid sober wit and their real-life stoner routine is extreme.
To my tastes, he's so much funnier.
I wonder what this event was? How risky would it have been to smoke pot in public in Australia in 1975?
The public figures did it in private & the rest of us did it in public- in a circumspect manner of course. Beginning of the post-hippie social phase- individualism & irony still had meaning then unlike now !
Decades later Gunston had a long battle with depression probably coinciding with the growth of the politically correct assault on society- too much for a comic genius no doubt.
ReedBender1: Garry McDonald did, yes. If you mean the rise of the 'alternative' style comedy then, perhaps, it was a factor. His character was too outwardly polite on the one hand, and not obsequious enough on the other. He got lost in between.
@@paulw.9669 It was sure a factor for Benny Hill.
Gunston may have got lost but MacDonald walked straight down the middle of "Mother and Son" writing the roadmap for great pathos and humour in Australian suburbia. MacDonald may have suffered depression but he lost much for his art, as did many of his friends and cohort. I'm forever in their debt.
Norman always embarrassed me ,,, still does
He reminds me of my relatives...& me.
I worked with him on on Fallen Angels in the 1990's.
SOOOO disappointed Norm didn't do the "which one of you is the Chink" routine! ..NOW that would have been funny!
CLASSIC 🇦🇺 🇦🇺 🇦🇺
What happened with him?
Wheres the interview with Joe Cocker?
The Navy blues CFc 💪🏻
BEX!
That's bloody funny
Fixing up the yanks
This is deadset old school 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
I wonder if that's because it's ---- old. 🤔
It's not 'old school'.
It's the ORIGINAL that 'old school artists' try to emulate.
Testimony at the Amber & Johnny Case ?
Norman Gunston, those were the days 😂 And Cheech & Chong are so young in this interview!
He’s like Narduar before Narduar
I didn’t know Gary was a Carlton supporter
GO BLUES !
What's with the man you can see through the window stroking his hair with a chicken wing before eating it.....
+Sarah Kurkov the mirror was almost as interesting.
2.02 well spotted ! just a typical freeloader after the food & drinks. I polished off 3 plates and filled my briefcase with chicken @ same event.
Its a lamb cutlet...
Haha he didn't actually stroke his hair, it looks like he was just gesturing something.
lol Chong just casually smoking a pipe. XD Even today that'd be awkward with any other interviewer with the exception of the guy between two furns dude. _(Lmfao it's buddah! hahahaha)_
Hahahaha I forgot how different Cheech was back then too, He is trying so hard not to laugh XD I really miss the way the used to do that!
....Fk me I'm old XD
Shimpal
RC Cola didn't last long now, did it?
Longer than it should have. 😉😊😇
Memories of the RC Cola girl still linger. 👍
Anyone want a Bed and a good lie down?😊😄😂🤣😉
He
Draft Dodger sss
May God save us from this 'ha-ha funnyman' interviewer.
Hate to say it, Norm, but that comb-over is NOT working. When it rains you must be long haired on one side, short on the other, and shiny on top, perhaps you possess a hat for these occasions. Your bald-over is second only to the weird confection Donald Trump wears on his head, god alone knows how much hairspray he must use to keep it all whipped up like that. I wonder if when Donald was on his TV show cameramen had orders to only shoot him from certain angles.
The 70s were _weird_ for people's appearances. Remember that doctor off the Young Doctors with the same problem, only a massive dome of a head? Mega-napper. The primitive cameras used to saturate at the lights reflecting directly off his bald head, looked trippy like he was a magical elf or something. And they all, including Norm here, looked so sweaty! Did nobody have a bath in that decade? How did nobody complain about any of that?
Eggshells was complete and utter rubbish.
Two of them were on some serious drugs
Bullsh!t!
Boring
I used to think Gunston was funny this is ordinary
I think Keith Moon handled this idiot in the best fashion possible.
