- Corporate Social Responsibilty just got interesting! Every year thousands of hours are spent watching the clock count down on a boring Friday afternoon. But... what if you could turn those Fridays into fun times with colleagues while also saving the world ? That is all possible, when you become part of the Social Friday. It all started in North Macedonia, but SOCIAL FRIDAY is on a mission: to change the world one Friday at a time. Find out how: Fikret Zendeli explains how business can meet community in this fascinating TEDxZurich talk.
Born in Macedonia, Fikret Zendeli moved to Switzerland at the age of 10, where he graduated as an engineering-technician, completed postgraduate studies in business administration and received a DAS in psychology from ipsyt (spin off Uni Zurich). Being no stranger to hard work, he moved back to Macedonia in 2010 with nothing but 2 PC’s and Golf to found Breon, a construction office. Raised in the spirit of altruism, Fikret later also founded the SocialFriday initiative, to raise social awareness for a sustainable society established as an integral part of the economic agenda. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I think the reasons Fridays are so unproductive are because by the end of the week we've just had enough. People are getting more and more burnt out and exhausted and it's because the 5 day work week just isn't right!! So I don't think it matters what we're doing on a Friday, by then we've just had it and start to check out mentally.
The impact on the SOS Children's Village is a testament to Social Friday's potential.
Making Fridays productive in a different way. Love Zendeli's approach.
JACK PERFECT, YOU GOING TO ASK tOM TO DO IT?
I get what you're saying but some things are just never going to change, we have to figure out how to get the best out of those things
What would you suggest unstead, in terms of how to fix it?
It's interesting to consider the global scale of lost potential from unproductive Friday afternoons. Channeling even a fraction of that time and energy into meaningful social engagement could have a tremendous positive impact.
Im not sure friday arvo is unproductive?
See thats the issue, keep it local quit talking global.
Not sure, not sure at all.
Absolutely, especially when there are so many feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Yes, I thought this was an interesting part of it as well. Also how they can measure such things is astounding
A very heart-felt idea, but in today's world, it seems the heart is rarely heard. Lets hope this man can gain some traction and get companies and people to participate. The difference it could make it immense - but will we all do the right thing?
If this change is being implemented I don't see how the wrong thing could be done?
Honestly thinking about it I'm not even sure what you mean by the wrong thing?
Do you mean do the right thing like.... as volunteers/participates? Bit confusing
I am not sure I agree; when the heart is big enough, it is heard.
True, all the best people are silenced.
Anyone here on a 4 day work week? What's it like?
I'm working in a company in Austria - since July this year the 4*8 week for full payment. People love it and the hiring process is going amazing. Productivity stayed the same, employees kinda work more and longer focused since the 4 day week.
I noticed work output increase because I have 1 less day and don’t want to go into the next week with open tasks, if possible.
I'd love it, and yes I'd do volunteer work on that day also
I would sure like to be.
can I get on a 3 day work week - haha
The way he describes his experience with the childrens village made me think about how wonderfully transformative human connection can be. I think this is something that's becoming dangerous in our society, how deprived of those connections we are.
It's wonderful to see different generations coming together through such initiatives.
Governments should totally support initiatives like Social Friday. It's in everyone's best interest.
The idea of tapping into the "wikipedia next door" through engaging with older generations is so powerful. We have so much to learn from their knowledge and experiences, and social Friday could provide a platform for that exchange.
Wow, Fikret, your talk is so inspiring! It's a reminder that even during our least productive moments, we can make a difference in the lives of others. Keep up the great work!
Yeah we can if we're in a workplace that allows us to lol
I love your PFP girlie! Such a pretty duck lol
Simply put, it is a brilliant idea with massive implications for social quality in life. Well done Fikret.
Thanks for sending it to me mate, and it is Friday isn't it? Drinks maybe?
Great share JG, though here in the ole US of A CEO's and trying take away working rights and use an iron fist to control staff. Not sure how this would wash with them.
and this - Grindr has lost almost half of its staff after enforcing a strict RTO policy that was introduced after a majority of employees announced a plan to unionize@@phillipnorris3rd
Just opened this man, thanks for sending to me Jonathan
Can we also talk about how engaging his speaking style was? Pulled me right in!
I'm 100% ready to accept his experiences with Social Friday as proof that businesses can prioritize social responsibility without sacrificing productivity or profitability.
I love how Social Friday connects different aspects of society - business, social causes, and culture. By bringing people together for a common goal, it creates a ripple effect of positivity that extends far beyond the initial event. These are the kinds of things we need to rebuild the sense of community that is so lacking nowadays
His point about awareness being the spark plug for change really resonated with me. We often get caught up in our own lives and forget about the problems others face. Regular social Fridays could help keep us grounded and motivated to contribute.
Kudos to the speaker for taking the initiative to turn Friday afternoons into something more meaningful. It's inspiring to see someone using their platform to advocate for positive change. Social Friday has my full support!
The combination of corporate responsibility and social impact is spot-on. His push for making a difference during those lazy hours is really clever
Transforming the way we work is a wonderful thing. The world is full of diversity of projects, people and perception based on the many things connected to beliefs. That's the beauty and frustration of humanity. When I "get to" do something I am far more engagement than when I "have to" do something.
Thank you, Fikret, for reminding us that we have the power to make Fridays more meaningful.
Two straightforward steps - willingness to do good and choosing a beneficial cause. The simplicity of Social Friday's approach makes it accessible and impactful.
It's simple when you put it like that but I think getting workplaces to actually bring this in might be a little tricky
Can we just appreciate how he took a simple concept and turned it into a movement? This is what innovation looks like!
I can definitely appreciate that!
Yeah I wouldn't agree that it's necessarily a movement just yet lol but definitely a great idea!
well... not yet!@@the-coffee-lover
I love how he emphasizes the power of awareness in sparking change. It's so true that we can't solve problems if we don't even know they exist.
Exhibiting and selling the artwork from the day at the old folks home is such a brilliant idea. I bet it brought them so much joy to see their artwork being displayed.
I'm all in for making Fridays more productive and meaningful. This talk really got me thinking about how we can use our time better.
It's amazing how a small act of kindness can have such a big impact on someone's life.
The story about Anna and the talented makeup artist was heart-warming. To think that social Friday can also create life-changing opportunities is really awesome
Gotta love TEDx for bringing such innovative ideas to the forefront. This talk is a gem!
Absolutely, hoping it will take off in my workplace
I think his reflections on the need for social engagement is pretty spot on. You don't know what you're missing out on until you get it and I think a lot of people are missing that engagement with something beyond themselves, something that connects us.
The transformative power of perspective shift is evident in the speaker's experience at the SOS Children's Village. A simple decision to be present brought about profound change.
Social Friday seems like a beautiful initiative that can bring joy and purpose to our lives. Let's make every Friday count!
I am impressed by how he turned a boring productivity stat into something meaningful
Social Friday is a great reminder to step outside of ourselves and make a difference
Was totally mesmerized by his stories about the outcomes of his social fridays... particularly the story about the retirement village, and then getting a little peek at the art they produced, wow! Truly awesome.
This presentation reminded me of the power of perspective. It's easy to get caught up in our own routines and forget about the bigger picture.
this is a pretty great take-away
This should be incorporated in schools! Imagine students engaging in meaningful activities on Fridays. Education beyond books.
His personal growth and change in perspective throughout the Social Friday experiences is pretty cool to hear about. Getting directly involved in social causes can really change how we see things and what we care about.
The idea of turning unproductive Friday afternoons into a force for good is brilliant.
Your idea of Social Friday is a game-changer. It's not just about work; it's about creating a sense of community and purpose. I'm excited to see how this concept spreads!
Yeah I liked the implications about how it will strengthen community as well
I totally relate to feeling the Friday slump. But this talk made me think - what if tech companies turned Social Friday into a hackathon for social good? Coding for change, now that's a Friday vibe!
Lol I love the inference that people working at tech companies have nothing to contribute other than coding
Yeah okay how is coding going to be a force for good?
@@chloesanduski 😂😂😂😂
@@chloesanduski That's not how I read into it but pretty funny
@@chloesanduski 🤣🤣 I mean they're not wrong are they??
Social Friday has the potential to create so much positive energy and goodwill. Truly something we need more of atm
This is so true, could really help boost communities and feelings of connection
Macedonia to founding Social Friday is truly inspiring. one person can make a difference.
Dr. Ring's personal journey with an eating disorder and how she overcame it was really touching. It adds so much credibility to her message.
I've been following TEDx Talks for a while, and this one stands out.
Love the entrepreneurial mindset here! Turning unproductive hours into an opportunity for social good is brilliant.
Fikret, your talk reminds us that there's untapped potential in every Friday afternoon. Social Friday is a brilliant way to channel that energy into positive change.
Every change begins with awareness.
It is up to us how we use our most valuable asset (time) and our energy !
These days, it is more important than ever to use it for positive change.
the idea is revolutionary. Turning wasted time into something meaningful.
Honestly, the concept of Social Friday is genius. It's about time we rethink our workweek. Great job, Fikret Zendeli!
It's definitely time for that. First Social Fridays then the 4-day work week lol
Love the energy and passion Fikret brings to the topic. Social Friday could really change how we view our workweek.
Count me in for Social Friday! This presentation got me pumped up to start making a difference in my community. It's amazing how a simple idea like this has the potential to create real change
The idea of Social Friday is a game-changer, turning inefficient time into a force for good. It's a call for us to collectively make a meaningful impact on society while strengthening the ties within our workplaces
It's crazy to really think about how quickly his perspective shifted. Just goes to show how impactful that kind of genuine engagement can be
Loving the eco-friendly perspective here! Instead of wasting away on Fridays, let's plant trees, clean up parks, and make Mother Earth smile.
I would be so down for this.
This seems like a win-win for everyone involved!
This talk hits differently, man. Never thought Fridays could be so much more than just waiting for the weekend.
The idea of Social Friday is so simple yet impactful.
Loved the talk! Let's think globally and act locally. Social Fridays can be the catalyst for positive change in communities around the world.
I love that kind of mentality, it's so positive to think of how our efforts add up and make something bigger than ourselves
I love the idea of Social Friday! It's heartwarming to see how a simple idea can connect people and make a positive impact. Thanks for sharing, Fikret!
THANK YOU for your time and kind words.
I appreciate the honesty here. It's easy to brush off that Friday feeling as just part of the workweek, but acknowledging it and proposing a solution is the first step in a much better direction.
TSOS Children's Village and the retirement home were touching. They show the tangible difference Social Friday can make in the lives of individuals and communities alike.
I'm impressed by how dedicated he is to making a difference. It's really cool to see someone taking action and finding a solution to a problem they've experienced instead of just talking about it. We need more people like this or for more people to have this kind of attitude
Yeah I agree, lots of people wanting to complain, very few actually want to do something about it
The personal stories really drove home the message of community and caring, amazing the kind of connections that have come from social friday for him!
Yeah it's awesome that he got such a great result straight away!
The spray-painting session at the retirement home was a heartwarming story.
This talk was a breath of fresh air! It's great to see ideas that focus on community.
I appreciate the focus on using unproductive time for a greater good. Kind of like wiping down a bench when you're waiting for the kettle to boil. Best not to let that time go to waste
such a simple yet powerful way to engage and contribute to the community simultaneously.
@MarilyneKing54, You're spot on! Repetition is key to forming habits, which can drive positive change in our society.
Let's keep promoting and practicing good habits to make a real difference together!
The spray-painting session at the retirement home sounds like it was a blast. What a fun way to engage seniors!
Heartwarming to hear about the children's village experience. It puts things into perspective.
It's a great story, easy to see how it affected him so much
Love that positivity ripple effect! Spreading joy at its finest
This talk made me rethink how we perceive productivity and community engagement.
Oh yeah? What are your thoughts on it now?
This is just one of many things about modern work life that needs to change!
I've definitely felt that Friday arvo slump he's talking about, counting down the minutes until the weekend starts and feels like every second is dragging.... It's refreshing to hear someone addressing it head-on and proposing a solution like Social Friday instead of making arguments for a 4-day work week that will never happen.
This idea is so good. Turning those draggy Friday afternoons into something that actually matters would legit make me look forward to going to work
Yeah I don't know if I'd go that far lol
Fridays can feel like a drag, but turning them into Social Fridays? Brilliant! It's not just about profits; it's about purpose. Count me in for making a difference, one Friday at a time.
Businesses meeting community needs is the future. This talk nailed it.
Yeah sure I mean it's not like anyone else is rising up to try and fix our sense of community
@orlageary5104, Thank you for your comment.
As consumers, we hold power in our choices. Future generations are increasingly aware of this power..
It's Tuesday afternoon so I'm very productive and have been inspired by Social Friday to ramp up my awareness of how I can help others, thanks Fikret
lol yup easy to be productive on Tuesday afternoon
His story about the initial skepticism at the retirement home was relatable lol glad it turned around! Old people can be so unpredictable
Social Friday could really transform into something meaningful for everyone involved.
The story about the SOS Children’s Village touched my heart. It's incredible how a small gesture during a Social Friday event can lead to life-changing opportunities. This is the kind of change we need!
This is an amazing idea that deserves more attention and engagement from companies!
This is a great idea! Hope to see it take off because it's the closest thing to a 4 day work week the US will ever get
I really enjoyed hearing about him going from recognizing an issue to actually doing something about it! Pretty inspiring.
Absolutely, plenty of things people recognize as being problematic and they aint doin shhh
No need for a scientific formula to do good. Social Friday is a reminder that a genuine willingness to make a positive change is where it all starts.
Just watched this TEDx talk and I'm inspired! Never thought about using Fridays in such a creative way. Social Friday sounds like an amazing initiative!
Loved the point about awareness being the spark for change. So true!
The acknowledgment that 'we are not alone' hits home, creating an empathetic connection with listeners facing the same Friday struggle.
I think it's pretty cool to give businesses the chance to make an impact on society in other ways than just what their business does... it'd be a good opportunity for them to demonstrate their values.
Just loved the spray painting session by the Dabeski residents who were able to display their "art'' at the Acanthus Gallery.
The stuff he says about loneliness in the workplace is really spot on... it can be so hard to make friends, especially if you know your personality is a little eccentric or "other" the fear of showing who you really are in the workplace is so much
I've never thought about that but I guess you're right
Wow, what an inspiring talk! Sounds like the perfect way to turn our least productive time into something meaningful. I'm pumped to start making a difference!
Productivity is definitely out the window on a Friday, love this idea!
This story is a testament to how determination and a good heart can lead tochnage.
@CatherinerDoe, Thank You !
I truly believe that determination and a good heart can drive meaningful change.
I'm glad this story resonated with you and hope it inspires others to make a positive impact as well!
It's refreshing to see corporate social responsibility.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Social Fridays - a win-win for everyone involved!
Yeah I've definitely felt that Friday slump too... I always put it down to knowing you're just hours away from two days of freedom.
I love the idea of turning unproductive Fridays into something meaningful! It's a great example of putting your energy somewhere it'll actually do good.
Yo, this dude gets me! I swear every Friday I'm counting down the seconds till I'm outta my cubicle and headed for the weekend turn-up.
The speaker's experience visiting the SOS Children's Village really struck a chord. It got me thinking about how we often take things for granted.
That's very true, I think it had the same effect on him too!
The personal stories really brought the concept to life. Inspiring stuff!
It shows how one person can make a difference!
Anything that puts us in a situation where we instinctively know we have to be present is beneficial. I think regularly doing that on a Friday afternoon would also end up impacting how we choose to spend the weekends too.
This is awesome! I was talking to my husband pretty recently about how there just doesn't seem to be a sense of community anywhere I go these days. We need to find new ways to make them and this would be really effective.
Great idea! More companies should consider implementing Social Fridays. Seems like a no-brainer for everyone involved.
Right? Sounds like there are so many benefits
