i use this as a guard pass defense. people have a tendency to hold onto your legs when you're trying to get up. a fun thing that people do is a step over when you're holding the leg. I just pick them up by the leg and drop them on their back. Anyways this is a good option for guard pass defense if like hitting deep half and switch singles. this sort of completes those types of options.
A Knee Bar or Heel Hook for sure. Also once you drop down and hook their leg, you take away their leg to counter attack you. So you could attack on your back, or finish the roll and then go for the leg lock for a more solid attack.
Read a lot of comments & let me tell you, all moves are low percentage if you don't master the move. If you drill the move at least 50 times per practice, you'll master it.
Great counter hold! Love the technique and to all the BBJ and other grapplers out their, Wrestling whether it be folk and or catch-as-catch can/submission style is the Godfather of all fighting arts and I stand on that!
I just went to my first open mat at my school and loved it. Your videos are awesome and are helping me greatly with getting a jump start in understanding moves and techniques. Thanks for the great videos.
i've been able to incorporate this in my BJJ game. i use it when someone is coming into side control and their knee nearest to me is moving in. it works in no-gi and it's great wearing the gi.
+Kolby depron Thanks! The videos with Obe were produced in 2007 - So no he doesn't have the shoes. You'll probably have to look on ebay. We have 150 free moves on youtube and 400 free moves on our website www.kolat.com with 2400 for our members www.kolat.com/full-access.html Check it out!
actually its used in college a lot. just watch any video scramble video on flowrestling and you'll see a lot of college wrestlers and top level high schoolers who pass legs.
This move was my bread and butter i never went inside the leg to roll it over...When hitting it to roll to the right the left arm is best used along side the leg where the elbow can be used as force tool to pull against the calf hand goes over the inside of ankle and other hand grips the middle of the foot to have more control this allows to set up a peterson if the opponent attempts to step over also when moving up with he leg trap it on a table top to work towards a cradle if available
Hey Cary, I go to Seminole Ridge Community High School and I was wondering if there's any chance you can stop by and coach as for a day and give us tips. It'd be really helpfull.
@cccgp1 no....the ref will only give the other guy 2 points if he is in control. When you do the funk roll you have the other guy's leg, so you don't give up any points.
@zeke4031 agreed but it's not risky at once you get it down, it was my most productive defensive move while in college. There are variations of the funk for both the head outside single and double legs shots.
I have a question idk if you will respond but what if he keeps holding onto that leg that your trying to push him off and then he flips you mid process
Yes, it would work but it is strictly a defense. We don't see a lot of heavyweights shooting singles down to the mat so you may not have the opportunity to use it. Thanks for checking us out!
Would your opponent really stick to the single leg like that? It seems like he could just let go of the leg and establish control when your back touches the mat.
technically he has a single leg so it isn't locked hands. refs (if they know what they are doing) will only call locked hands if the person on top has control and is locking their hands around the waist/legs to stall. (this rule does not apply to pinning combinations though.)
Obi looks like he allow you get this move. Looks like he instinctively wanted to grab your ankle, but didn't. Just curious if trapping the ankle is a good counter.
If you mean sitting back on your ankles to prevent an opponent from grabbing them it can work if your head is between the legs and you can lift him up. Still you have to drive forward and extend up and your ankles can be exposed. Yes Obi allowed me to grab the ankle because this is a demonstration!
As a former two Time all American wrestler in high school back in the late 60s and 70s in the C.I.F. Southern section of California I feel I have a valid opinion on Mr. Kolat. I have never seen a more capable coach as an objective observer. Most coaches at the high school and collegiate levels are dumb and ignorant compared to him. Many coaches get their jobs because they know somebody or had a half ass career as an athlete. I learned on my own and seeking out advice from other successful wrestlers not coaches.
I wonder if I do these kind of moves I would get first because the tournament in Pocahontas I got fourth witch I should've gotten third, the stupid people or refs took a point or points away from me I should've had 5 points. And I did a nice move on somebody I toss them over my shoulders and I landed on them and after or before that I forfit because somebody nailed me right in the head it hurt for a couple of days but now I'm fine.
@1lostinspace if he gets to your hips on the first shot rolling will still work cause he wont have an arm to stop you...if he pressures down on the leg your rolling with you just keep rolling...if hes johnny brick shithouse and just sits there you throw the leg past (here to your left) and then just roll into his other (right) leg and finish on the other side
+이민환 Yes you need to drill it thousands of times to feel comfortable in scramble situations. If you are willing to put in the work to master it anyone can do it.
In jiu-jitsu this would be a killer transition to a leg lock.

Yes man. Heel hook city
Yep

There's so many great wrestling techniques that would lead to submissions. Great to have the wrestling in there to supplement BJJ
This is a classic defense in Funk style wrestling. Ben Askren exploited the hell out of this his whole career. A complete folkstyle classic.
Ben “Funky” Askren
We learned this today, I'm already comfortable running it. I LOVE it.
Read a lot of comments & let me tell you, all moves are low percentage if you don't master the move. If you drill the move at least 50 times per practice, you'll master it.
all these people saying it is risky and ben askren built his career on it!!!!!
The only one bb. No but vi no go kid
Did he invint it ?
Apparently no. Gerry Abbas and his friends did.

Lol 😂
I'm a very lanky and funky wrestler and I can guarantee that if you work on it and use it the right way this is a great move
Till someone ankle locks you
So your guaranteeing it will work for people like u, cool
Do you think this technique could be used to escape bottom side control in BJJ/ Submission Grappling???
Me to

Thank you so much. Honestly, I use your videos to learn new moves and have my coaches help me with them. It makes me such a good wrestler. Thank you!

Cryptic Smoking
Cryptic Smoking.
That's really sick. This is why some wrestlers are so much greater than others.
Juicy knee bar or ankle lock submission from this transition !
Regardless of points or legality, that's an awesome move. Thanks!
Ok. After watching this a dozen times, I think I got it
i so want this man as my coach!
i've been able to incorporate this in my BJJ game. i use it when someone is coming into side control and their knee nearest to me is moving in. it works in no-gi and it's great wearing the gi.
I have to say that i have never seen these wrestling moves before, but it's awesome. why aren't these being teached at wrestling clubs
dude this is a very popular move
Karlan Meyers where I am from we rarely see this move
Karlan Meyers where I live I don’t see this move nor even have been taught to do it
Because some coaches thinks it’s was desperation move
I saw a kid do this twice in 30 seconds. Kiefer Duncan is my spirit animal.
my Wrestling team(MacArthur) just wrestled them recently and i will be wrestling them on the 16th of this month.
hey, i love all the vids and you are probably my favorite wrestler of all time. and does obi still have those shoes. i need a pair and i like those.

Yeah I have been trying it lately it is actually super effective I take back my last statement haha ryan deihl is a beast at it

I wish cary was doing this when I was wrestling, but in those days he was just getting into trouble. But, hey, my trouble was much worse
RUclips didn't exist.
sickest single leg defense i've ever seen
Just went to scramble camp great move.

I’m a mix martial arts arts and I do this
Great!
love this move.
Because most people probably expect a sprawl. With this, you can surprised them and get some points + you're in control.
pretty sick Cary.. we should swap tech sometime..
🙏
@zeke4031 agreed but it's not risky at once you get it down, it was my most productive defensive move while in college. There are variations of the funk for both the head outside single and double legs shots.
Love it. Perfect way to sucker an opponent into a tap via kneebar or footlocks.
Glad it works for you!
Damn! I'd like to see this in MMA or submission wrestling. You could take the back from there...
nice move.
this is way better than the one that i learned.
good video,
@KOLATCOM can you make a video for riding legs?
@Demaj11 Yeah it is and in a mma application its a sweet set up for an ankle lock or knee bar
I have a question idk if you will respond but what if he keeps holding onto that leg that your trying to push him off and then he flips you mid process
@arelsamil bad refs or bad wrestlers... its a legitamate move if done correctly. not my style, but it works.
Do you think this technique could be used to escape bottom side control in BJJ/ Submission Grappling???
Dang haven't seen these since doing freestyle in highschool.
This is a Folk move, in Freestyle you'd give up free easy points to your opponent doing this.
thank you!!!
I am looking for some videos focused on light weights... I wrestle 112. You got any???
is it a safe move once you get the leg ?
A lot of times when I shoot on someone they get their hands lock in between my legs, is there any ways to break their grip or counter?
Does this work in heavier weight classes, 220-285
Yes, it would work but it is strictly a defense. We don't see a lot of heavyweights shooting singles down to the mat so you may not have the opportunity to use it. Thanks for checking us out!
Very dangerous move
does this only work with single legs?
I was at regional last night and kid tried to funk roll and they got stall mate cause they both didn't let go of the leg so they just stayed there
@blackcoastprodctions you cant give your self back points when assuming control
Would your opponent really stick to the single leg like that? It seems like he could just let go of the leg and establish control when your back touches the mat.

Don’t you get exposure points when you roll?
This is from folk, not freestyle.
fantástico
Thx good
1:27 locked hands?

@cccgp1 it's not stupid, when this move is done right it's unstoppable

+이민환 Yes you need to drill it thousands of times to feel comfortable in scramble situations. If you are willing to put in the work to master it anyone can do it.
***** great to hear, thank you
wouldn't it be easier if you went for a cross-face cradle as soon as you receive control
@sheep2slaughter It would be hard considering you have his leg thought........I think....
But the second guy can also grab your leg.. yes if you don't get up fast..
won't your opponent get back points for that roll right before you pull. i don't think that there is a need for being on your back.
@wadd1186 i said the same thing but if u get someone who really knows how to do it. theres not allot you can do to stop it
@blackcoastprodctions In high school after three seconds you will get 2 near fall.
You could finish it with stepover toehold
