A few points: 1) The grip and body/head position is everything, the leg is optional. 2) Learning the set-ups to get to the tie is crucial to success and 3) the grip and finish is available from standing, underneath, FHL on the feet and on the mat (knee tap) 4) to defend, jam thumb into attack-hand armpit and break the thumb (John Smith) or learn a slide-by on the fireman’s side (Sidakov)
Once at freestyle men’s national, Dan Gable was very generous to shoot takedowns against any and all of us. He had already shot takedowns with a series of wrestlers for 25 minutes straight. I got a chance to go takedowns with Dan Gable. He took me down multiple times with single leg shots. Then he circled towards my weak side leg that was stepped back. He got angle of attack just by motion and good footwork. He faked low and I put my hand out towards his shoulder. He hit an arm drag, pulling downwards. Then he released the arm drag and I immediately under hooked. Next thing I knew, I was flying through the air. Dan Gable hit a smooth fireman’s carry. His arm drag fooled me. He had grabbed my wrist, and his drag hand grabbed my forearm just below my elbow. The arm drag was just a fake to get me to underhook when he released the fake arm drag. There was no attempt to circle behind with arm drag, instead he pulled down. And when he released the grip, I got an under hook. It was a great fireman’s carry. Dan Gable was very kind to allow us to spar with him. If you see this post, I thank you for helping us all to spar with the best. Thanks!
I pictured that entire exchange in my head. Pretty sure I've seen a wrestler from Ohio State hit that arm drag setup into the fireman's before. The Russian tie is also a good way to bait your opponent into getting an underhook
I started wrestling as a freshman, now a junior, and my best attack was always a fireman's. It's gratifying to see that a few of the things I did instinctually are also done by those in the highest levels, except for Lee's finish. I should try that one
I started trying to develop the Fireman/Dump system from your Desanto videos. I watched this today and immediately in practice hit the inside carry run feet to the outside finish for the very first time. Your videos and systems are game changing man. We all appreciate your work!
I hope your taking your knowledge and sharing then with a Local Highschool, College or at a University. I wish i would have had a coach who used film to break down my techniques. I ran a fireman's set my entire Senior year and never had a Takedown score against me in 31 matches my Senior year, but after you last couple videos, I can see many things I did right, wrong or not do then at all. I struggled with some guys that were talk and lanky. The run around the opponents feet would have solve that problem. Something I've not me is someone who spins under their arms which pinned the opponent's shoulder to the mat making it very easy to pull arm bar or chicken wing with then flat on their belly. Great series and would love to know what your doing in the wrestling community today. Fantastic job!!
He’s a very successful HS coach. Technically, he could coach D1 but I doubt he’d want to. He’s such a great teacher and communicator which lends itself nicely at the HS level. And you see it in the results as he’s building champs. Dude is legit and I would’ve loved to have access this level of content when I was wrestling. 🙏🏼
Thank you. I coached at my HS for 5 years after graduation, but I took this season off. It went really great for the school, but I want to be a head coach the next time I get back into coaching or maybe the assistant at a bigger school where I'll have more kids to coach
@@GuyFromSC No. If I get a good opportunity somewhere else I'm moving. I have a baby on the way so my wife my want to stay here with our families for the first year, but I would love to go elsewhere. Love Florida, but the wrestling scene down here just isn't good.
@@earnyourgold Woooow, congrats on the baby brother. That’s an incredible blessing. I have an insight on two positions available in SC. SC is a lot like Florida like where many of the really good kids are moving up north once they get into HS but the SE has gotten better lately. Big time names coming out of GA, SC, NC, etc. Kids are just transferring so much now to seek that top level comp.
I rewatched that video after reading this comment. Man I loved making that one. It's a shame that it only has 9k views. One of the best examples of chain wrestling & having a real system of attacks that I've seen. And you thank you
My man is exposi my whole wrestling style. Working in sit throughs and short sit through dumps helps mix up your attacks so it’s less predictable what’s coming if you do this. A lot of guys will start defending the regular fireman’s if you do it too much so when they are defending it short fireman’s with a sit through or letting go of the leg and sitting through the pocket can allow you to score more points easier.
I'm honestly not 100% sure either. I've never actually tried the Nick Lee finish so I'll have to get a feel for it. Seems like it's work well for taller wrestlers and it may be slightly less risky as well since you're shooting all the way through. My favorite finish is the lazy fireman's over the head finish and that's the one I've done a lot
I never get why fireman is so effective. You know it's coming and is easy to defend but so many just to understand they are in danger because the "have control" with a underhook. I preach to control wrist and block hips and circle to the head. My 142 lb Girl State Champion pick it up and just stuffed it after i taught it to her. the boys just never got it.
Yeah I first heard about him back when I was watching all of Jordan Burrough's old matches from college and saw that he became a MMA fighter. He was pretty good

This is the best wrestling technique channel on RUclips.
3:10 love that shuffle step to really load the opponent up and prep the penetration step. Excellent job as always man.

Been excited for this one. My son just started working on this series this season, this will really put the polish on his tech.
Hope he finds success with it. I never see anyone using it whenever I go to wrestling tournaments
Fantastic! I tell everyone who will listen about your videos! Keep up the good work!
Thanks. I really appreciate your time and great analysis.

starocci next please 🙏
I honestly don't have anything to break down about Starocci
Ah man@@earnyourgold
Could you do one for inside reach single leg or cross ankle pick to single leg coach
Can you do a break down on his hand fighting system please?
Should breakdown PJ Duke , penn state commit
Please respond but does this work for kinda taller wrestlers?
Im 5’11 wrestling 144
Yes
I don’t understand why you would do the Nick Lee Finish instead of the fireman’s. I don’t mean this as a critique. Im just confused. Plz help
The tighter you and your opponent are during a takedown, the more likely you can get back points.

Don't tie up w Bo!! Haha do u remember Gregor Gillespie? He NEVER tied up and was national champion it was brilliant and neutralized so many attacks

He beat Dustin Schlatter in the finals, right? He’d been on a two year tear at the time…

desanto 2.0? How about lee 2.0?
I suggest that anybody doing a Navy ride keep their head down or they're likely to take an "accidental" elbow to the mouth.
