John Lydon talks about Sid as his childhood friend who listened to dub records with him and was named after the Lydon family's pet hamster. While Lydon is a wanker and a blowhard (albeit a smart one), the section of _The Filth and the Fury_ where he breaks down and essentially blames himself for bringing Sid into the band and putting him into the situation that resulted in his death seems very genuine.

Glen Matlock was THE MAN and deserves loads of credit for his work in the Sex Pistols, and Sid couldn't hold a candle to him. If Sid hadn't gotten fucked on heroin or with Nancy, he might've actually been serviceable, but even then, his style was completely different Glen's. That being said, there's a live recording of the Pistols playing in Sweden in 1977 with Sid where they play most of their material, save for a few songs, and you can hear Sid playing bass. He kept the beat, played in-synch and was actually plugged in. That clip in this short was from the last Pistols show in SF, and he was pretty messed up by that point.
