- Hey everyone.
In the Summer months on the East Coast of Australia, the sea currents bring extremely warm, clean, water right in close to the shore. Off the Gold Coast specifically, the warm, quality water draws in larger pelagic species, such as several types of Marlin, Tuna, Dolphinfish (Mahi Mahi), Wahoo, and Mackerel.
Recently, we went on a holiday to the Gold Coast, and went out to target some of these fish. In this video, we ventured down to the Gravel Patch Reef, not far off of Burleigh Headland, in search of some Mackerel (mostly Spotted or Spanish Mackerel). We decided the method we would start off with was to slow troll dead Pilchards on a wire rig. Have a look at how we did!
For the rigs we used, watch Rod's (Rokkit Kit's) video (link below), and check out his channel for some related videos!

Nice video guys is this palm beach reef
Hey mate thanks for the comment! This was at a reef called Gravel Patch which is right next to Palm Beach Reef, and I have a feeling that Palm Beach Reef and Gravel Patch Reef might even join onto eachother, or at least come close to it. Thanks, Will.
Will Kitching thx for reply mate i was fishing the same day at palm reef no luck for me, if u dont mind share a bit more detail where u fish at that would be nice cheers
Is it near mermaid beach?or burleigh head
Hey mate, it's off of Burleigh Headland, the GPS marks are as follows:
S 28' 04.300
E 153' 29.300
It is a little bit deeper here than Palm Beach and Mermaid reefs, so we have never anchored here, and got them by drifting (floating Pilchards and casting metal slugs), and by trolling dead pilchards on the rigs shown in this video. We have seen boats anchored here as well though. There is never as many boats here as there is at Palm Beach and Mermaid, so it can be easier to fish. On a day where there is a lot of Mackerel around, it shouldn't be hard to get a few, but when the Mackerel aren't there in good numbers, try to find some bait schools up off the bottom (This is how we got the Mackerel in this video).
I hope this helps, and good luck! Let me know if you get any!
Cheers, Will.
