Rachel's struggle with insomnia started in grad school. She tried everything from sleep aids to strict bedtime rules and routines to improve her sleep, but nothing worked. The harder she tried to fix her sleep and get rid of sleep-related anxiety, the more difficult things became.
The turning point came when Rachel changed her approach. She stopped focusing on trying to create the perfect conditions for sleep and she stopped trying to control her thoughts and feelings.
She started being kinder to herself. She practiced making space for difficult thoughts and feelings and she practiced building skill in bringing herself back to the present moment and being more aware of the present whenever her mind started to time travel.
Rachel's story is a powerful example of how changing our approach to sleep and our response to insomnia can lead not only to significant improvements in our sleep, but also our overall quality of life.

Love how realistic the recovery stories are it certainly isnt a fast process. Im on month 5 now my anxiety is way lower around sleep and getting 6 hours most nights but i still have rough nights which bring the thoughts and feelings back and im certainly not where i want to be.

I think it's important to emphasize that developing new skills takes time and ongoing practice :)

I can't take a nap even if I'm sleepy during the day, so it gives me some pressure to sleep at night.
Why don't I feel sleepy even after being awake for 24 hours?
My physical and mental state has deteriorated and I am worried about whether I will be able to sleep at night.

The anxiety around sleep and the urge to constantly find something is just draining. Am thinking about getting on anxiety medications but I am stopping myself because I just want to let it be. Like I function during the day and am reminding myself I am ok with whatever sleep I am getting. I tried doing the cbt I training with the manual I found for veterans and I was so restrictive about it. The need to control everything really negated everything and it ultimately didn't help. Letting go and letting it happen has been what is slowly improving things.

I admire your honesty. For as long as we try to control what our experience might be telling us cannot be controlled, we are likely to continue to struggle (or at least remain stuck). It sounds as though you are finding it helpful to move away from that control agenda - that doesn't mean everything is easy now, but it sounds as though you are on a more workable path forward. I wish you all the best!

How can I live the life that I want without having the energy to do so? I feel more and more drained, I feel depressed and anxious. Tried to let go, to surrender, I can’t have a single night to recover!!!

It can be really difficult - no doubt about it! We can't always live the life we want to live, but there are often things we can do that will at least keep us moving toward the life we want to live.
When it comes to the presence of difficult thoughts and feelings like fatigue and anxiety, it sounds like you have a choice:
      1. Wait for fatigue and anxiety to be gone (or at a certain level) before doing things that will move you toward the life you want to live.
      OR
      2. Do things that will move you toward the life you want to live even when fatigue and anxiety are present and even though that might be difficult.
Since you are the expert on you, only you know which approach is going to be more workable for your situation. I hope there's something useful here and I wish you all the best.

    Hello Martin :)
I am a (sadly very neurotic) guy from germany.
    My short question:
Is it possible to get the same amount a sleep per day after years of insomnia, like it was before insomnia showed his face?
So if I slept before 7hours... now 4.... can I be optimistic to regain my old sleep pattern or is it most of the time not the case?
    Thanks!

I wish I could answer that for you, but I cannot. The body takes care of sleep duration all by itself and we cannot make a certain amount of sleep happen through effort. A slightly different way of looking at this might be to ask yourself what you would be doing differently if you were sleeping like you did in the past - because then you're probably looking at actions, and they are always within your control.

What do you do when gastric troubles won't let me sleep? I am working with doctor. I am not sure if the insomnia causes gastric. I am so stressed.

That sounds difficult. I would suggest being really kind to yourself, first and foremost. Next, I would suggest continuing to do things that are important to you, no matter how small. That way you will continue to be moving toward the life you want to live, even when all this difficult stuff is present.
