Do TYs really care about where you're from? I'm from/go to school in the midwest. Are PNW and East coast programs not gonna interview me because of that?

Hi, your video was really informative. I am a non US IMG with 2018 YOG whio recently finished step 1 and 2 but no USCE. I know its late for this yr cycle but I couldn't do any thing as my exams were postponed for almost a yr. If I don't match the next yr, I will exceed 5yrs YOG bar. Due to covid situations its not possible for me to get visas for step3 or externship. I want to residency in IM. Do you think I should apply for transitional this yr so that if I match into one I can at least get some US clinical experience and then apply IM categorical next yr? Please help.

Well transitional years are relatively competitive. I don’t think TY programs are going to accept an applicant who isn’t applying to an advanced program as well, but I’m not sure. You’ll definitely have to do some more research on that. I’d suggest applying to as many IMG friendly Internal Med programs as possible .

How do you know which TY or prelim medicine programs are "easy" or "hard?

    • @TheRealSkinImInMD

Really just reputation wise- what you’ve heard from graduated Med students or from what your classmates have heard from their own friends who are current/past residents of the program. Sometimes you can also gauge from the sample schedules the program puts on their website- ie: 6mos of elective lol

Can I apply to preliminary internal medicine this year and then apply to an advanced specialty like diagnostic radiology next year?

It is possible but not always successfully done. However, A lot of people do this when they don’t successfully match and therefore re apply again during their intern year.

There’s no difference between prelim and TY I saw “prelims” with only 4 months of IM and “TYs” with 7 months of required IM... this terminology should be changed.

Thanks for watching and subscribing 😊 I have heard of challenging TY programs with lots of IM time as well. For now, I think the general understanding is still the same with TY being expected to be easier due to less IM time (especially in the minds of a lot of program directors)
