Eddie was always one of my top favourites, even after he left Carlton(guess who I support). He was an excitement machine anytime he was in the vicinity of the ball! He always had that knack of reading the play and putting himself in the right place at the right time. His agility as a small forward and accuracy are absolutely obvious.
As for GOAT, that’s impossible to really quantify in Aussie Rules. In my mind he’s certainly at or near the top of the list. I’ve never met him, but in interviews he always seems like a great bloke too.

As an Adelaidian i watched a lot of Eddie during his tenure at the crows, sometime even in person. He was phenomenal every. Single. Game. He is one of the reasons Crows came 2nd overall in 2017.

The most was by a player named Fred Fanning in the 1940's when he kicked 18 goals in a game.
However, for a game with a good recording to watch, Lance "Buddy" Franklin kicked 13 goals in one game. You should be able to find that pretty easily on RUclips

I would say he's the best small forward to ever play the game. If someone saw only one of his freak goals, they'd say its a fluke. But he just kept on doing it. Beautiful kick on both sides of his body too.

Eddie Betts is an aboriginal/first nations player. The FN players are generally excellent players and the fact that the FN people only are 3%of the Aussie population proves that they play well above their 'weight' in footy. Shorter players are better able to get the low down balls more so than the taller ones.

Apart from his incredible footy skills, Eddie is a top bloke and don't you just love how much he enjoyed himself whilst playing?
My suggestion would be 'Dustin Martin 2017 Highlights' The single most dominant individual season I have ever seen a Player put in. Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith Medal, Premiership Player, All- Australian Player. None of these will mean anything to you at the moment, but that is the Qradrella of Achievements; to do it all in one Season is pretty much unique. I don't barrack for his Team, but gee, loved to see him play.

Definitely agree on both counts. I feel like it would be harder for someone who doesn’t follow the sport to appreciate just how good Dusty was, though. He was a freak, but there won’t be as many of these easy to understand highlights, if that makes sense. Midfield just doesn’t have as many of these kinds highlights.

Not that Fred Fanning played AFL, that was VFL. If you're going to include that, let's throw in SANFL as well...the record is then 23 goals 6 out of a team score of 26.12. Ken Farmer, 1930s. Also beats Lockett, 1419 goals. Rick Davies 152, Scott Hodges 154 in a season..

Eddie started at Carlton from 2005 - 2013, playing 184 games and kicking 290 Goals; then moved to Adelaide Crows from 2014 - 2019, playing 132 games and kicking 310 Goals. Eventually he returned to Carlton from 2020 - 2021, playing 34 games and kicking 40 Goals. He played Representative football, lining up with the Indigenous All-Stars in 2007 and 2013, then the All Stars in 2020; he lined up 7 times in the International Team from 2010 - 2017, playing against Irish Gaelic Team in both forms of football(Aussie Rules and Gaelic). After his retirement, he began the job of development coach at Geelong Football; where he helped former Crows teammate Tyson Stengle at Geelong, and helped him to become a member of the 2022 All Australian roster.

Eddie's one of the fan favourites - everyone loves him (no matter who they barrack for). Comes across as a great bloke too. For some reason he couldn't train with Adelaide (can't remember why) and just showed up at a local Amateur League club (Not even top level, I think maybe in Division 3 or 4) and asked "do you mind if I train with you guys tonight"....

  • @EmbraceThePing

I don't think you can goat as easily with AFL. It really is a team game with different players contributing in different ways, doing different things. Having said that, Eddie is a Legend.
As for legends, unfortunately most earlier players won't have a highlights reel so remember it will be over represented by newer players.
Being a Blues supporter I have to mention Craig Bradley (7 times selected for all aust team of the year), Steven Silvagni (recognized as one of the greatest fullbacks in AFL history), Greg Williams, Bruce Doull, Gary Ablett snr and Graham Farmer (acknowledged as one of the greatest rucks of all time) all from the team of the century.
Glad you are enjoying your journey, hope to see you enjoy a full game (last years final was one of the best you'll see).

He started at Carlton then went to the Crows then finished back at Carlton . This is only half of his highlights . He was good because he was small . That made him incredibly elusive and quick . His reactions were ahead of just about everyone and his ability to kick a goal , especially close in , was un matched . There are few that could pull off those goals on the opposite side of his body like that to , left or right it didnt matter to Eddie . He is also one of the most loved players because hes just such a nice guy and hes always happy.
Another GOAT to check out would be Garry Ablett ,Snr and Jnr .They were both incredible players and its not often you get a Father Son combo that could be considered to be the greatest as individuals. Others to watch would be Buddy Franklin , Dustan Martin .
We are all getting excited for the new season so your reactions are most appreciated . 👍

Eddie is a 🐐 in the context of small forwards. He’s up there with Peter Daicos and a few others.
All-time goat (in any position) is very hard, as you say. In recent times though, I’d say Gary Ablett Jnr, Chris Judd, Lance Franklin, Adam Goodes, Scott Pendlebury, Andrew McLeod, Wayne Carey, Tony Lockett, James Hird, Nathan Buckley are the best of the AFL era.

  • @phillipevans9414

Eddie Betts was a great player, but he's not the "GOAT". However, he did forge a very long and successful career, in the notoriously difficult position of "small forward", and IMHO would at least be in the conversation for "Small Forward GOAT", where ability to read the play, pace, agility and goal kicking skill are paramount. Small forward is a somewhat peripheral position in footy, where the real gun players are usually "midfielders" or "key position" (either forwards or defenders) whom have a larger impact on games and are of greater "structural significance" for the team. For some of the recent greats in these positions, check out; Lance (Buddy) Franklin, Dustin Martin, Gary Ablett jr as the standouts for the past 20 years. Really enjoying watching your journey with AFL (footy), it's a great game. Cheers!

Kicked 7 goals in the 1980 grandfinal. As a rover and small forward he was pretty handy. Most goals in a game was Fred fanning with 18 in 1947 against St kilda .

Eddie can justifiably claim to be the best " goal Kicking ' small forward, and the best at kicking the impossible freakish goals.... but their were others .
Cyril Rioli was probably as good as Eddie for kicking goals, but that wasn't Cyrils main job.
Cyrils job was to apply pressure and tackle the defenders to keep the ball locked into the forward line until his team scored .
If a scoring opportunity presented itself, then Cyril was allowed to go for it, but first he must read the game and position himself to apply pressure.
Leigh Mathews was the best small forward ever... ..so good he was also a top class Full Forward .
In his youth and at his peak, Mathews was the best ROVER ( small fast midfielder / onballer ), except he wasn't fast and wasn't so small.
Mathews was like a cannon ball , as cold as ice, and a human wrecking ball with a well earnt reputation of destroying much bigger nasty players in head on clashes.
16 stone monsters only ran into Mathews once .. ...after that they kept away from him.
Mathews probably still holds the record for the most kicks and most possession in a season.....he also came close to the most marks, and kicked the most goals, kicking more than any of the key forwards.....but he was a rover playing on the ball and around the centre.
That year he broke all the records, but hardly polled a vote for the Brownlow Medal ( MVP ), because the umpires didn't like how he used his body like a battering ram. lol
