    "The Lust Factor" is soooo true! I'm in a wheelchair due to a car accident and am very hard on watches. The constant banging of my arms/wrists as I roll all over the place took a terrible toll on any Omega, Tudor or higher end watch I owned. I finally sold them all and went with G-Shocks, exclusively. I have 4: MTGB1000, GWG1000, GW9300, and GWFA1000. They all look and work great and can take abuse at the gym, track or the firing range. I hated parting with my beloved automatics, but it was less traumatic than the horror of noticing a new crack or scratch on my much more expensive watches. Great video, as always, mate!!

      Or buying a watch cause all the youtubers say you need it to fill the list in your collection....You shouldn't have any list but what you like. For me its only solar and Auto in a field type catagory with no divers (so protreks and pilot/fieldwatches😂)...except I do like the new Bond watch. I like the color scheme...I didn't even think it was vintage looking foo patina until TGV said it was....don't care I still like it.
      And I've fallen into this trap too. I got some watches siiting in my box I don't like wearing cause I listened to the you got to have these in your collection think....not thinking if I really like it.

You can put that money towards another watch that you do like.

And that's coming from someone that has almost ALL the subscriptions for watch related channels and use to sell watches. I share your passion for casio and if we need to narrow down the list that's only few brands that worth the candle :Seiko, Citizen, Casio. TGV, as always, you have gone above and beyond! The intro was humorous and entertaining, but far more importantly, I was quite pleased with all of your list. The RUclips dealer really really hit home! I was absolute gutted one day to be watching a formerly well liked RUclips-dealer who specializes in certain types of watches state that “my watch never tells the right time - I don’t wind them - if I want to know what time it is I look at my phone”. I had made a purchase from this tuber-dealer (coining that term btw) and was sorely disappointed in the customer service. On another note, Marc, at Long Island Watch is as excellent as you portray. My son’s first real watch was acquired through Marc, and I have purchased several other pieces from him with which I am absolutely thrilled! Not the least of which is my new Seiko Flightmaster that I recently purchased from him...(as a pilot can attest....the slide rule works and is accurate, while not completely practical!). I have not purchased one of his Islander watches yet, but I appreciate how open and honest and forthright he is regarding his personal brand as well. Another brand that operates on the same wave length as Marc, but has almost zero RUclips presence is Bernhardt Watch Company. The owner, Fred Amos, takes exquisite care of all of his customers. I cannot possibly recommend him enough. My daughter’s watch, which she received for her 16th birthday, was purchased from him and he even went out of his way to have it personally engraved for a pittance of a fee. The man performed the engraving purely on trust that his minute fee would be sent AFTER DELIVERING THE PIECE! The man and his company are true diamonds in the rough. As I write this, I am even wearing one of his Binnacle Anchors! You should truly give him a good look.
    As requested...what to avoid....the easiest recommendation I have for avoiding getting burnt....I would have to say probably site such as AliBaba and Aliexpress.....millions of watches that promise the moon and are for ridiculously low prices....but from what I can discern, are most likely wastes of time and money.
    Sorry for the excessively long comment. Well done, my friend, onward and upward!!

My first watch that I bought myself a couple of years ago was an HMT Pilot watch from India (at around the price of an empty steel watch case). It had repainted dial, not-so-clean movement inside etc... It stopped a year later and I have moved on to Seiko SNK (realized that automatics without hand-wind option are not for me) then Lorus (good design, good size, I wish it was mechanical instead of quartz) but I still miss that old HMT. It got an old but still cool design with it's dark field-watch dial, thin case and domed glass that I could not find in the market even in the 3 or 4-times price-range. Sometimes all the logical reasons just get overwritten by a good design that you fell in love with :)

    You don't know how bad the frankenwatch invasion are until you get into russian/USSR watches where most listings are franken and reliable, detailed descriptions and references often don't exist.
    It's starting to happen with east-german watches too but it's still in the "do you really think you're fooling anyone?" phase.
    ...
    granted if you put another movement inside an east-german Ruhla, it might lost its period accuracy, but that would still be a performance improvement...

      To be fair, some Russian watches were basically patchwork from the factory. Remixing the parts from one brand is IMHO not the end of the world if we are talking about fun, low end pieces and it's disclosed.

    Ok, I add one point only for collectors: don't buy a watch because is a "must", all of those watches that you see repeated in collections. It's not mandatory to have the SKX, the Alpinist, the flieger, the Chinese pilot chronograph, the Bambino... just get what you really love, not what you "should" have.
    Surprised about your first point, I agree with it, I don´t even feel comfortable in a boutique, I hate that atmosphere. I can't understand people buying Casio homages; really... I think is mean, Casio is cheap, where is the necessity? Repainted dials... what an irreparable crime, watches for people that follow the vintage trend but actually hate patina and only like new things, I'm really sad about all the irrecuperable watches that are being forever spoiled with this turn of the market. Vintage watches are trendy and that is creating a lot of problems, absurd prices, bad and unnecessary restorations, frankens...

    There is one RUclips personality that is also a dealer who i truly used to enjoy because he authenticly appeared to enjoy watches for watches. Now it kinda seems as though his content is more business driven than for the sheer enjoyment of the hobby. This persons polarizing views alienate a certain demographic of his viewership which I'm certain they would disagree. They go from an enthusiast to an expert of what "value for money" looks like in 0-60. The more subs they get the more inflated their opinions become, almost commensurate. I was extremely pleased you touched on this briefly. You've never come off with any sense of arrogance or an elitist snobbery, just in my opinion a very genuine fellow who enjoys and appreciates many things which happens to include watches. Hello TGV,
    I live in Belgium and here, we have a micro-brand called "Raidillon" (form the F1 speedway of Spa-Francorchamps), these watches are Automatic chronograph with a 7750 Valjoux inside, each models are made in limited series of 55 exemplars.
    I don't know why but a lot of Raidillon watches on the second hand market between 1000€ and 1800€, the price looks good and I'm very interested by some models.
    My questions are : "Do you know this mark?" And if it's yes, "Are they really good watches? (because of all watches on the second hand market)".
    Thanks you for all, you've made a great video!

Positive thing in cheaper watches, is that you learn what you like. I had a dream of owning navitimer, Wearing seiko fligty teached me that i needed something completely different. End up buying rolex air-king instead.

    Investment watches. Here’s a sad story for you. Deleting some old photos from my phone I found one of a UK Rolex AD window from 2017. Explorer II. Milgauss ZBlue. Airking. Take your pick. But here’s the kicker. The Milgauss was discounted! Nobody interested. Fast forward three short years. No steel sports to be found anywhere. Everything wait listed. And on a well known grey market website September 2020 warranty cards available on immediately flipped Rolexes bought then sold for profit only. Nobody cares about their history. Their technology. Their heritage. Just armies of anonymous guys in raincoats buying and selling to line their pockets. That’s the state of watches in 2020.

    • @j.burgess4459
      @j.burgess4459 3 года назад +6

      You're right. Until very recently there were people travelling all around the country (even hundreds of miles from where they live!) going into numerous different Rolex ADs and going onto literally scores of waiting lists for the "hot" professional range models. Any time they got one they'd just instantly flip it! But the good news (here in the UK at least) is that almost all of the ADs finally seem to be taking serious action to filter out these dudes-in-raincoats. At my AD they now have a preferred-client model which basically demotes people on the lists if they don't live within the ADs "catchment area" (i.e. if there are other ADs which are _nearer_ to where they live.) They also prioritise people they have a trusted relationship with. A lot of the details about what tests they apply are extremely hush-hush. But I have been told it isn't just about purchase history as a crude sum, but about what kind of watches a person has. So someone who is _only_ interested in getting Rolex professional range may be less preferred than someone who has bought a couple of JLCs and then wants a Sub or GMT, for example? They are most likely prioritising people they know to be legit collectors. They are likely taking into account whether they'e seen the customer wearing the various previously purchased watches in the store weeks or months after buying, whether they've had watches serviced - that kind of thing. I guess no system is perfect, but, one way or another, they _have_ to burn the professional flippers - those bastards have basically stopped regular local customers from buying a professional range Rolex at retail price! :-0

    • @MHG790
      @MHG790 3 года назад +3

      @@jdraven0890 Absolutely not! First of all: Luxury works even in crisis because the people who buy it still have money in a recession. The other part is: People who have cash want to get rid of it in fear of inflation or currency issues. Look at gold and silver. That is the same mechanism. Or Whisky or Art...

    • @bobbydazzler1780
      @bobbydazzler1780 3 года назад +2

      BB Wolf people with cash in the bank are getting no interest and like to hoover up inventory at Rolex ADs... But... we’re in unchartered waters, the whole game could go pop at any time. Stashing multiple multi grand watches away is as dangerous a game as any other investment where the bottom could drop out of the market with millions dumping their stock into the grey market as demand drains away. Could happen. The Rolex bubble may yet implode then we’ll see the flippers running for cover.

    • @adnydrum
      @adnydrum 3 года назад

      @@j.burgess4459 Like you I'm in the UK . I can't speak for JLC or Omega but in terms of the watch brand most people desire I don't share your view of AD's becoming any more 'reasonable' in their behaviour. The entire concept of only permitting someone to *maybe* buy a Rolex after 'forming a relationship' - ie throwing a huge amount at them over time, for stuff you probably don't want - is digusting, and sharp practice. Much as I appreciate Rolex' workmanship and quality their products have become no more than a commodity which is traded, and the AD's actively continue to rig the market. Any premium/luxury brand with a shred of integrity would put a stop to all the offensive practices for which Rolex AD's are well-known. Ask yourself why - when it could easily be done - Rolex does not?
