- Hey everyone! Back with more Trailmakers and today I decided to take on the challenge of building a high-tech advance podracer capable of adapting to the terrain that it hovers on! Did I succeed? Watch the video to find out...but one thing's for sure, I had tons of fun! Let me know what you thought of the video and I hope you enjoyed watching this as much as I enjoyed experimenting with this new build :)
Thanks for watching the video! If you enjoyed it, make sure to like it, share it with your friends and give me your feedback in the comments below!

About Trailmakers: store.steampow...
Don't know if it'll work but maybe using distance sensors looking at the ground to detect when you get air could set off some gimbal jets or thrusters to cushion/slow your downward momentum. Couple that with some stabilisers to keep you flat in the air and it might solve your jump problem 🤞
That and/or some speed sensors pointing downwards attached to gimbals? That’s how I made the auto-slow for my jellyfish VTOL
I was thinking the same thing except what if you hooked the sensors into another set of hinges to make the engine pods tilt downward to force the pod racer into the ground a bit
Was thinking the same thing!
Either that or maybe always on gimbal jets that effectively neutralize like 75% of the craft weight? that way it should dramatically reduce fall speed allowing the hover pads to make up the difference?
I did that for one of my hovercrafts, with gimbals jets and proper stabilisation it's incredibly effective.
Between the 2 engine you need a crossbar (like the beam in the movie) with hinges for more stability
not anymore
I think a quick fix you could try would be to set those gimbals to a low power and have them always on. If done correctly you’ll have a racer that won’t fly, but has enough lift that it falls very slowly. You could also extend the range of that distance sensor on the front and connect it to a second more powerful gimble, that way the front will lift before it can impact. Also do the same with the main body and make it so each pod can move up or down independently by a few blocks with less resistance. The extra lift from the gimbals should simulate a stronger hover pad that allows you to give the 3 main parts more freedom to move without bouncing like it was when you started.
I really like the design Kosmo! Maybe you could do a race with these racers with all the guys?
3 suggestions.
1. Perhaps using an altitude sensor to activate downward gimbal jets to combat the jumpiness of the craft. Might work, might not, idk.
2. Adding some more flex to the arms (perhaps suspension?) and making a more gradual adjustment curve. You've currently got a 69 to 20 adjustment curve which is pretty steep (1:3.5), leading to more jumps and crashes.
3. Using 3 hover blocks in a traingle shape beneath each structure. Using hover blocks in a straight line in this game seems to always cause instability issues and lead to more crashes and an apparent lack of sufficient hovering power, but using a triangular shape, especially for smaller crafts like podracers, seems to be the ideal for resolving most stability issues. Just make sure that you set the two in the direction that's more likely to crash (so two in front one in back for the "pod jets", and two in back one in front for the "pod seat").
I think those three adjustments would do wonders for the build to make it closer to what you were hoping for and address some of the issues you were speaking about struggling with.
The whole point of videos is for the creators to have fun, show what not to do, what to do, and let everyone else see the things you have tried so it saves them time
What you really need is a mod that increases the distance that the hover pads keep you above the ground.
Great build. Maybe using aerodynamic parts would help as you would only be getting air if you are going quick, making a nice controlled glide down
I have two suggestions for your pod racer
1- take it to a good map that is made for supper fast racing.
2- add a flying mode so when u go over a hill
( If u even survive going over a hill at high speeds) u can "land" it back on the ground.
A distance sensor to see how far you are from the ground would prolly work better than a speed sensor for the gimbals. Could also use weak thrusters instead but that might be too chaotic. idk for sure just feel like that'd be the case.
I think, it only misses gimbal jets on the front, that activate with the distance sensors. It would help getting out of a nosedive and when you give the sensors like 30 meters range, they activate soon enough to have an impact. If it´s not enough, let some mini-thrusters help with dampening the impct on the ground (maybe with even own distance sensors below the pods and the drivers cab). Also angling the front hoverpad on the drivers cab like on the pods might help making it a bit more offroady ^^
Trailmakers is awesome. nice job on your pod racer Kosmo. maybe having a sensor pointed at the ground controls a gimbal jet to push down. trying to keep the pod racer always close to the ground. of course it will take much testing to determine the correct setting is it works at all.
The tilt tech is great, but I think you should lean more on previous experience. Think about how you'd make a hovering vehicle in Scrap Mechanic. You want more powerful hoverpads? You've got 'em already: gimble jets with distance sensors pointing downward. The distance you set will directly impact the *height* your craft maintains, and you can have additional jets to slow down your falling speed if you're above that height.
to help with the hard impact on landing you could try putting a less powerfull gimbal thruster or 2 in the body and instead if a speed sensor use a distance sensor that activates when it doesnt sense the ground, you could even try putting a second distance sensor and hinge in the front of your main thrusters that only senses one or two feet away as a back up if you fall straight down onto your thrusters or into a hill that your current angle cannot overcome. As for the sticking to the ground the only idea i have is just a ton of downforce and really good brakes if needed, for example pistons with friction pads that extend out and touch the ground. You could also try lowering the distance of the hoverpads from the ground because it makes them more powerfull,so in the event of a slight jump they would take it better. Love your videos, hope i could help.
If you have some far-forward distance sensors facing down rather than accelerometers, you could set it to 5 and output when above 5. Then have that pivot the air-breaks at the front and some weak upward-facing gimbles to try stop as much pod momentum as possible. That might stick it down, though it may also be irritating to be slowed down all the time.
Alternative title: Kosmo discovers that what he really needs is a pod racer that doesn’t actually leave the ground (he needs a car)
That podracer was sick! I think in trailmakers you can’t think of hovercrafts the same as cars, they are specifically for going along jagged terrain that can cause issues for cars, but not for hills and jumps which is much better suited to cars.
Only change id make personally is make the rear pod have 2 rows of 3 hover pads so it stays above the ground easier, around the height of the front pods, as that’s what kept getting hung up in the exocross map.
Finally, changing hover pad settings from 1m to 2m helps a lot (but you prolly did this already)
Couple of things I noticed which might help if you fix them:
- The engines are missing a bar between them and might be the main cause of the 'bouncing' it does at speed
- The arms that are attached to the pod are too stiff so you essentially have a very wide and stable vehicle that you're trying to flex to the shape of the terrain, consider adding more segments to it
- The large thrusters are heavy, consider adding some lift so it gets lighter with speed so it doesn't drop like a rock when it gets air
Perhaps a second sensor at the front to detect when it's starting to leave the ground could angle the pods downwards. This should help pull the nose down and make it hug the ground more.
I think downwards thrust would be the solution. When you get to high by even a couple units it triggers downwards gimbals to stick to the ground. Don't have to survive a jump if you can't jump.
I remember seeing a crazy hover vehicle in one of scrap mans best builds a while ago, it used a ton of logic to constantly stay at a fixed height parallel to the ground underneath it, if I remember right it was driving sideways around pillars and upside down on the roof. Similar system could be used for a pod racer but I have no clue how it worked.
edit: found it! hover speeder by +sebastian, it was in video called "Some Of These Hovercrafts Have No Respect For Physics!"
Kosmo, the flying purple chicken eater.
I made a pod racer with loose pods, and other than the not so good on uneven terrain and too much thrust in the pods as opposed to the body, its pretty fun
Kosmo you always have the vest timelapse music 🔥
I know it might not be "more stable, but having the engines conected more loosely like a chain link/cabel but have the engines fastened together with just hinges at either side between the engines similar to the movies
Can you Play raft mecanic again
Yes pls man 👨
Yes pls
Yes bro j now wat I Mien
Or any Scrap Mechanic Mod to be honest!
The Custom Game Mode made playing with Mods WAY easier now. You don't have to install anything anymore, just subscribe to the CG version, the updates are then automagically DLed the moment the Mod-Author coded them and Multiplayer is fun too, as only the host has to subscribe to the mod, the clients get the correct version on join
And
There
Are
So
Many

Fun
Ones
Try Sky World for Instance, its a super hardcore SM in like a Sky Block kinda way, its quite a exhilarating new game feeling!(And I have a severe fear of heights, you don't want to know how much…😨)
But if its too hard in the beginning, add some parts and blocks mods... also you might want to restart multiple worlds for your 1st run, so that RNGsus gives you a nice starter island - that might help.
@@Luziferne I'll he honest, my acrophobia's never extended to virtual heights, I am *so* sorry if yours does.
If hover pads are too weak, why not distance sensors + jets?
Had to look up exactly what a podracer is, but it looks like ones in the movie handle more like airplanes, they fly higher off the ground and roll around a center axis (just like a plane in a turn). If you are set on having engine pods follow the ground, adding some winglets, specifically them instead of wings, on hinges to perma-tilt them up 10-15 degrees would give you a neat effect of the control pod rising higher off the ground as speed increases. It will self-stabilise as well: higher it goes, less lift winglets produce.
Probably downwards + upwards gimbals driven by a distance + speed sensor combo, acting as a sort of active suspension might cut it, but it definitely would require a good fine tuning. If u wanna check it +sebastian should still have a Hover Speeder on the workshop that basically simulates a pod racer by using wings only (the thing it's insane) 👋👋👋
Gimbals only work for thrusting up fyi
@@robbiestockton9788 nah, just give a negative value were it says power, it'll push down instead.
One thing you could try is using the hover pad glitch that turns on when a sensor doesn't detect the ground or when falling.
I think this deserves a graduation from 'Noob' to 'Novice'
I would suggest reducing the side drifting to make it feel closer to a car by using more fins or thrusters triggered by certain side speed✌️✌️✌️
I loved the video of you fixing the moped but it would be awesome to see your other motorcycles and try to recreate small parts in the games like scarpmecanics or trailmakers for example a brake in real life compare to a game lol it might be hard.. or just a simple vlog of the motorcycle you have or the cars and possibly mods you want to do them
I made a pod racer though I didn’t utilize hover pads.
Edit1 1/2: vertical speed and distance sensors to up thrust or suro fins.
Love your vids right before I sleep. Keep them coming
Kosmo you are the best youtuber, and you are never in a bad mood
Now THIS is pod racing!
I'm not sure what the misconception is, that podracers have to be made with hover blocks, but I've flown enough 'alien-tech' aircraft to know that you can use gimbal jets and make them behave like hover blocks, which means they can be used as a much better alternative as they allow you to have much more freedom of control over them than hoverblocks
I once read a short Steam Guide on making a Vehicle that climbs up Cliff Sides, and it involved using a cheater trick where ya trick it into clinging onto the turf much more easily by having it equipped with a Hover Pad that's flipped upside down so it's shoving its Hover Force into the air to push down onto the ground instead of trying to push it off the ground. Potential food for thought...?
Edit: P.S. How the hell did Spellchecker look at "ots" and decide "This is fine."...? :/
Maybe a distance sensor pointing down with upwards firing thrust to glue it closer to the ground. Might work fine with the downward speed sensor as a cut-off (if down thrust wasn't enough, don't slam down harder than absolutely necessary)
You could used wing and a distant sensory
Kosmo back with the great music
Kosmo, the way I solved the jump issue was to use down-ward facing distance sensors and hook them into small adjustable fins. If the pod gets more than 1m off the ground it angles the fin to push the pod down. Idk if you remember from the movies, but the pod racers pretty much hugged the ground so I think that is lore appropriate. If you care to check out my pod racer, just heart this comment and I'll upload it and let you know guys know.
EDIT: I uploaded it anyway 'cause it sounded like I was fishing for a response from Kosmo. I wasn't. I just wanted to show off my design. XD.
It's in the hovercraft category, called
"Pod Racer Version 2"
by Moonmoon
When Kosmo got a call i thought it was my friends kkkkkkkkkkk LOL
Make a largest passenger plane in trailmakers and complete all quest in airborne map and carry all the chirpos from every island and fly majestically through the sky doing in multiplayer would be so awesome
Discord ring got me lol, thought it was my disc ringing
Hey kosmo, I loved the build, when your building could you please press the instructions button and hide that screen obscuring red car? This would be much appreciated.
Were you feeling left out when KAN and TwoFace built podracers the other day? lol Good job on your build either way. xD
Yay new vid!
Me
I just see hover pads as really squishy, bouncy wheels
I thought that discord call was me, and I posed the video 😂
You might need a lot of logic that are set to different heights with sensors underneath the whole pod and then you might have to put some downward thrust but not as strong not sure just a non player theoretical opinion much love yo
I think the solution could be pairs of glitch/normal gimbal jets to stabilize height
I wonder if you could get it to stick to the terrain better if you just gimbaled the main jets down when it got higher than its hover height
The Flaps at the front should also activate while turning for realism^^ would look cooler i think
What about just using gimbal jets and having them turn on using distance sensors to stay at a stable height above the ground and speed sensors to turn them on to cushion landings
We're good as long as you don't lose your RUclips license. I think I like your videos more than Kan's. 😂
now this is podracing
Technically the floppiness is realistic for pod racers and also there is supposed to be be an energy beam connecting the pods to the other pod aswell, at least for anakins, which is what the one you built, to be fair, it is the iconic pod racer.🤓
I mean the colors isn't the whole iconic thing, its the model. Which like the one kosmo built it has the three flaps on the two pods, so it is the model of anakins just without the energy beams connecting the pods
I said the colors before he changed the colors for the dif map
No clue if it would work, but what if you attached the hover pads via suspension like you would with wheels?
Never tried anything like this, but would suspension to connect the hover pads make any difference?
I think the steering sucks because you're using the helicopter steering on the pod itself. Try switching the steering to the actual engines, and have the pod just be dragged behind them. PLUS! The pod racers were never meant to be jumped! They're just made to go fast!
It looks great
Put a upside down Hover Block on all three pods so it won't lift off the ground
when your discord started making noise i thought it was my discord
Hey kosmo, love the vids. As an fellow rc addict, just picked up an arrma vendetta on sale for 199bks, you n kan have any crawlers?
nice!! Those are cool! We have SCX24s and I also have a TRX4 :) tryna get kAn into the 10th scale crawlers
what is it with peaple and chirpo
ok its cheating but i think it would work. but glitch hover pads so they apply upward force and put a distance encore facing down. when it gets to close for the normal hover pads to handle it the glitch ones take over and they are much stronger so they should stop you completely. make the sensors only activate after the normal ones are being overpowered so its not constant
69 is an awesome value!
Bro what 💀
Hey'o
So you know there are mods but didn’t use the complexity mod during your best builds video?
thought the call was from my discord lol
I'd build it in Main Assembly.
U know it as my birthday today 😊
My name is Sam and I’m 12 now
10:49 NOOOO I THOUGHT I HAD FREINDS!! until ipaused the video to take the "call"
have air controls
I have not played yet so i am unfamiliar with the mechanics and physics
10:50 Who else went to check their discord?
Sigh... Now this is pod-racing...
You have friends kosmo?
Aight den. hehehe.
Sorry chasing the chicken got me. This video was worth it simply for that.
why u try eat chicken? chicken not food he coins
