Oil leaking from the air filter? | Iron 1200

  • I thought this was a disaster. Fortunately, it looks worse than it really is. I used heavy-duty degreaser to wipe off the oil from my bike. I should have been checking my air filter during every oil change. It's not something I'm use to doing. But if you own a HD, you should learn that habit. You can install a catch-can if you don't like Harley-Davidson's way of filtering excess oil. I chose to keep mine stock.

Make sure you don’t overfill your oil tank. That’s why you’re getting oil everywhere. Look at getting an external breather kit. It will redirect oil away from your intake.

that's correct. i remember putting in a little over 3 quarts of oil in on my last oil change. i read somewhere that running at a high rpm will force that extra oil to come out too. which i do remember doing too bc i was playing catch up on a group ride. something in my mind just told me to look down when i was stopped at a red light. that's when i saw the oil on the pipes creating smoke. now i just need to replace the rocker box gaskets. at 20k miles, the rocker box cover has started to leak oil now. it doesnt create drops of oil though. its more of a oil residue that i can wipe off with my finger or cloth.

Your oil breather crankcase ventilation, is plugged and blowing into your air cleaner and carburetor. Your changing the air cleaner was a waste of time, as the same will happen again. On that stupid baffle just get a metal nut and drive in between the baffle and inner exhaust pipe with a screwdriver and wedge it on.

So you change the filter too or just clean up everything from the air filter !!! I just got the problem :( on my 883 Harley Davidson

you probably already cleaned it by now. you can change it or clean it. i changed mines bc they're cheap to replace. if you do clean it, make sure to recharge the filter. K&N sells a recharge kit.

You should get past the stock air cleaner and get something much more efficient, but it all adds up and can be spendy. Great videos 👊
