  • It's feeding time for our small batch of animals. Take a look at how all of these different kinds of animals all enjoy the same meal. This particular fodder biscuit is made of wheat and barley. We have a specialized poultry egg mix which also includes safflower, peas and sunflower seed. We will reintroduce that mix when the poultry are getting ready to start laying again. At the time of this video, they are going through their yearly molting cycle so they have stopped laying eggs.
The fodder biscuit in this video was measured at 14 pounds and came from 2 pounds of seed. The fodder was harvested at 7 days old.

I like this idea that all the animals are together.

This is amazing! I was considering pasture rotation for rabbits, goats, and chickens, but was unsure of the order. I never considered putting them all together!

Awesome to see that you've got that many animals together, even the rabbits, I had no idea that the rabbits would stay in there with the other animals, so awesome!!

I love your video! While I don't think I'm going to do a fodder system I really liked seeing what a variety of animals you have mixed into the same pen. I'm buying land soon and will be practicing permaculture and rotational grazing so the animals will be going through the orchard areas as well as pasture and woodland. Our plan is chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, sheep, goats, cows, horses and a donkey. Maybe a couple alpacas for fiber later on. Most of these animals will be in the same pasture together at once with the poultry roaming free except at night.

you really should break it up so that some animals don't 'hog' it all.

I'm feeding ducks and rabbits fodder like you are. Barley sprouts. It had been going great, and saved a lot. They appeared to be healthier.
But then this winter ending the ducks are slow to start laying eggs. They haven't yet. (Although I am higher elevation which means slower spring start.) I'm trying to figure out if the fodder means they will start laying eggs slower?
Did you run into anything like this?
And do you have to cut up the fodder for your ducks, or can they manage getting it on their own?

Bovine nomenclature: Cow (females who have had a calf) & heifers (females who have not had a calf) are females. Steers (castrated males) and bulls (males with all his 'parts' intact) are males. :-)

I really like your video. I've read that sprouts are actually lower in dry matter and protein content. However, they have more vitamines and less anti-nutrients. And they're digested better than grain seeds as you mentioned in the video(where did you get that information btw?). Several studies have shown that sprouting is not economical vs. grain seeds. So, I'm just wondering, from you experience, does sprouting really cut down feed cost, or do you use it as a supplementary diet? Thanks a million.

can feeding of animals be exclusive on fodder? Do they really need anything else but water and fodder?

Sorry if this has been asked. Is just 1 fodder biscuit enough for 1 whole day of food for all those animals or do you supplement the bigger animals with something else? Also are all the animals always cohabitating? Thanks!

Very interesting fodder system. Did you design the set up or did you buy it already made? Can you please provide details on how to build one or source where to buy one.

How do you convince the rabbits not to dig under the fence and escape? ;-)
How much grain do you feed every day as Fodder to this group of animals?

I have nine goats in one pen and an old 22 year old horse in another. Would 2 biscuits for the goats and 1 for the horse morning and night be enough? And how much more of hay and grain would you suggest to add to the biscuits? New to all this. Thanks You for any info. GrannySue
