@@DanishDelight77 That may require a tiny bit more explanation. @GazMASHCuts , for several years Scott and Mitch had a RUclips channel named SuperFruit. You can find it here: youtube.com/@sup3rfruit They would post things there that they didn't want cluttering up Pentatonix's official channel. They used it for a weekly vlog where they would do live feeds with fans, or play silly games, or interview people, or put on skits, or sing together, or whatever else they thought of. Eventually SuperFruit put out two albums: _"Future Friends"_ 1 and 2. GUY.EXE is the official video for the song of the same name, which was published on one of the two _"Future Friends"_ albums (sorry, I don't remember which). It's very funny.

This mix is like the ultimate "Try not to dance/sing" challenge. They used autotune on the Cher song to honor it because it was the first use of it as an artistic choice rather than to make up for a singer's lack of pitch :D

Recommending: Thank You (original, Scott on piano, Kevin on Cello, Christmas vibes) which Scott and his now husband Mark wrote during the lockdown or a dark horse not often requested: Royals. It really shows how good the group is before and how much better after the bass line comes in.

Love witnessing the birth of a new Pentaholic! The shock and awe! The sheer joy and appreciation! And you ain't seen or heard nothin' yet! With over 200 covers, over 200 xmas, an ever expanding catalog of originals, not to mention the side projects they all participate in or contribute to! You will be busy for a while. Lots of great recommendations already, I have many myself. But best to start where they did...at the "beginning" when they competed in the televised 2011 Sing-Off Competition. Twelve episodes that showcase their talent and growth as individuals and a newly formed team, ready to take on the world and tackle the music industry to its knees. Great reaction! More please!

Good reaction! My favorite is mitch. And fyi that wasn't his falsetto. He's a counter or contra tenor. Which basically is a tenor that has a natural vocal range up into soprano. That's his natural range. Svott and Kevin use falsetto which if you watch they strain for. Mitch on other hand has no strain at all hitting high notes you haven't heard yet. "The prayer" is a good one but also mitch has cover of billie eilish "your power" he does live solo. Check it out. Tbey don't use auto tune. Except here which was homage to Cher singing "believe", where she famously was one of first artists to use auto tune. Cher called it "robo-cher". Lol

Their use of Auto-tune on the Cher song was a deliberate homage to Cher. She was the first to use Auto-tune creatively in a pop song and she did it on “Life After Love”. Pentatonix are such perfectionists. Everything they do, every choice they make is deliberate and meaningful.

Thanks for joining us Pentaholics on this over a decade long journey of this amazing band! I absolutely love your joyful and enthusiastic reactions to them!
I am much older than the decade these songs were hits, but was introduced to them through my sons. I also love to stand up and dance to these. This is only one of the many wonderful things about PTX, is that their fans are all ages, from my 71 yrs and older, to my granddaughters ages , 5 yrs and up. I introduced them to the girls when they were just toddlers, and they love them.
Once again, your reactions are wonderful and a delight to watch. I do hope you will react to Bohemian Rhapsody and one of my absolute favorites , Come Along by Cosmo Sheldrake

Just an FYI, when it comes to the top 3 A Capella groups out there, PTX has over 20 million subscribers, home free around 2.5 million, and voice play has less. PTX has 3 Grammys and a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, the only A Capella group that does. They have been in a movie, pitch perfect 2. They have been on multiple shows, including agt, sesame street, and bones. Plus 2 singing competitions.

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 10 месяцев назад

_The Sing-Off_ was an a cappella competition show that ran on NBC. Bands had to audition for it, and those that made it on would give one or two performances a week throughout the season. There was a three-judge panel that would give the band their reactions after each performance; all of the judges were highly respected professional musicians. Some bands would be eliminated as the season progressed, tightening the field. After the twelfth performance viewers could call in to vote on a winner. First prize was $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic Records, a minor subsidiary of Sony, which was the sponsor of the show.
When Kirstie, Mitch, and Scott were in high school they'd formed a trio that performed at school functions and occasionally appeared on local television. They'd named it, not so imaginatively, "The Trio" (this is why pentaholics refer to these three as "the trio" to this day).
Kirstie and Scott were a year ahead of Mitch in high school, and graduated in 2010. They each went off to college during Mitch's senior year in high school. Kirstie had a full ride scholarship at the University of Oklahoma, and Scott attended the University of Southern California where he joined an award winning amateur a cappella group named SoCal VoCals. Through SoCal VoCals he met Ben Bram, who had a job as a coach on _The Sing-Off._ Scott was intrigued by the idea of The Trio going on the show. If they could win that recording contract they could make a career for themselves doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best - The Trio need never split up. So at the end of their freshman year at college Scott and Kirstie headed home to Arlington to be there for Mitch's graduation and to talk about Scott's big idea with Mitch.
Meanwhile, Mitch had been having problems at school. Mitch and Scott are both gay, and both had come out of the closet in high school, and Mitch's high voice provided the high school bullies with a pretext for some gay-bashing. Mitch may have known that it was really gay-bashing, but he seems to have internalized it as being about his voice, so when Scott presented his plan Mitch was doubtful. But Scott and Kirstie both said it would be okay, and it would get him away from the bullies, so Mitch agreed.
With his two best friends on board, it was time to put the plan in motion, so Scott called Ben to find out how to arrange an audition for The Trio. And Ben told him that the rules requred them to have at least five members in the band. The Trio needed two new members and a new name. Ben suggested that their best bet would be to add a rhythm section - a bass and a beatboxer. For a bass he suggested a guy he knew named Avi Kaplan who was an operatically trained basso profundo with an incredible range. The Trio called Avi, and he was very interested, so that was okay, but Ben had no suggestions of where to find a beatboxer. In desperation The Trio went to RUclips and typed "beatboxer" into the search box and the first video that popped up was one that was going viral that week, showing a black guy playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time. And The Trio said, "Wow! He's perfect! Let's get him!" Good idea, but how to do it?
It turns out that back then it was possible to send private messages in RUclips (this is no longer the case), so they sent Kevin a message. "We love what you're doing; congratulations on going viral. And would you be interested in flying across the country to audition for an a cappella competition show with four strangers?" Then they crossed their fingers and waited. And somewhat to their surprise Kevin actually messaged them back. "Normally I'd be right there; I've worked with a cappella groups before and I love a cappella. But right now I'm studying for my final exams for my pre-med degree from Yale."
Sigh. That sounded pretty definite. Better look for someone else. But no one else was as good as Kevin. They had pretty much convinced themselves to settle for second best when they got another message from Kevin. "Hey! Good news! I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly out." Scott picked him up at the airport. The Trio met both Avi and Kevin in person the day before their audition. Mitch had to skip his high school graduation ceremony to attend the audition.
They chose the name "Pentatonix" in honor of the pentatonic scale, a scale with five (penta) tones just as their band has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a slightly more imaginative way of saying that they're now The Quintet.
Pentatonix appeared throughout the 2011 season of _The Sing-Off_ (season 3); all of those performances are available on RUclips and they're well worth watching, preferably in order so you can see how they grew over the course of three months. Try to watch the ones that include both the introduction and the judges' comments afterwards. Some of these performances are as good as anything they've done since, and they haven't covered those songs since so the recordings from _The Sing-Off_ are the only source available.
Of course, the history of Pentatonix doesn't end there, but that's enough for now, because you'd mentioned not knowing about _The Sing-Off._ If you have trouble finding the old recordings just mention it in a reaction and someone will give you a comment full of links.

You can pull up all the Sing Off videos that Pentatonix did with the comments by the judges. You can see where they came from to where they are today! They made full use of You Tube after Sony released them from their year contract because Sony literally didn’t know what to do with them! They started off with covers of other groups but I think their first original song that made it big was “Run to You” That has been followed by many others “Light in the Hallway” written by Scott (tall blond baritone but with incredible range) for his nephew and sung by Avi, “Water” sung by Kristen (only seen as part of a 4 song mini concert clip from Pop Spring 2016), “Anchor” sung by Mitch (totally beautiful) and “Thank You” written by Scott and his SO (just married recently) kind of considered a Christmas song but really nice any time of the year! Going down the “rabbit hole” of songs covered by Pentatonix is an absolute joy! Each song listened to becomes your favorite until the next one is listened to.🥰🎉😍😁

They are annoyingly fast at arranging stuff at this point. Medleys are the most work (and honestly, least direct payoff since the amount of licensing that has to be done...). They "complain" sometimes when something takes a long time to arrange... which meant in their world "a few days"... A normal song they can bang out in a few hours by now. There is a reason that 2 of their 3 grammy wins were for arranging. Scott (blonde) has also won an emmy for his part in arranging a choir performance this year. There are lots of behind the scenes things throughout the years where you can see them "circle jam" (as they call it) to get a rough outline for the arrangement and they have had a "silent member" since the start called Ben Bram who is a spectacular arranger. A fun peek behind the scenes is their 17 minute video "Recording of Evergreen"

I love 70's porn-star Mitch! I don't know most of these songs - I'm 67 - but I don't care. You're never disappointed by PTX. Be sure to give a listen to the 2016 live Popspring concert. Or their cover of Macklemore's "Can't Hold Us" for some pretty amazing rapping. It's so fun getting to "rediscover" them with you! Thanks for sharing your reactions.

You should react to some of their K- and J-pop covers and originals. They have a BTS mashup, "Butter x Dynamite"; a medley of songs from J-pop group Perfume, "Perfume Medley"; two collaborations with J-pop group Little Glee Monster ("Dear My Friend" and "Midnight in Tokyo"); and a remix of their original "A Little Space" with members of K-pop group ATEEZ; a cover of "Pretender" by J-pop artist Satoshi Fujihara

The auto tune was a nod to Cher who was the first to make it popular.

Great to see your reaction to Superfruit and Pentatonix... you should definitely try Superfruit's Exe and Pentatonix Original video of Amazing Grace and Imagine. If you want to go back stage with them and see their recording, then I will recommend Recording of Evergreen. It is a lon video but worth every minute.

    They don't use auto tune

I dislike that ''Everytime We Touch'' was included. Song was released in 90's by Maggie Reiley but it wasn't a dance hit. Cover by Cascada in 2005/2006 was dance hit but it should not count.
    Pentatonix is awesome as always.
Autotune usage is just for Cher. Believe is one of song that did autotune right.

Haha welcome to a trip down the PTX Rabbit Hole. Now that u've peered over the edge of the hole & have started to slide down it make sure in ur PTX videos that u pause a stupid amount especially if it's a Vevo (bottom right hand corner) marked video cuz u'll get slapped up the wazoo from both Vevo & RCA for copyright & definitely have an opacity filter on.
Oh another thing to watch out for is if u see Kirstie crack a smile that's ur early warning that she, Mitch or both is about to belt the crap out of a song & hit notes that'll blow ur mind & leave u beat up & Mitch Slapped.
Case in point she cracks a smile in Amazing Grace before Mitch goes on a deep run & slaps everbody then she cracks a smirk just before she opens up & belts the crap out of the song. She does it too in Mary Did You Know where they gang up on us & she does it too in The Prayer.
There's a few other songs she does it too like Can You Feel The Love Tonight and Seasons of Love & The Little Drummer Boy to name a few.
