Hi Jim: So glad you now have your own channel! Good for you, and wonderful for us!! You’re a great teacher. Looking forward to learning from you!! Thank you!!
Wow, I didn’t know this existed. I live in a hot climate and often avoid using my oven in the summer because I don’t want to heat up the house. I’ll have to check this out. Thanks for the video!
I'm amazed. Never have viewed solar cooking before. Love the fact that there is virtually no clean up. You didn't even get sweaty. Must explore this cooking option because we bake Texas. The ribs look delicious! Thanks Jim, you're so sweet.
I will have to see if there are smaller ones being it is just me traveling. You did fantastic Moderating on Bob's live video today. The feed was flying. Thanks for the video.
Next week I unbox and test a new solar cooker that folds flat for storage. I also use a Sunflair cooker that even with the racks and cookie sheet folds up to fit in a flat shopping bag size. I will add the link to it in the description for you. I will try to get a video out on it too.
you can stack the pots in the sun oven but the bottom pot is always cooler. It makes double layer cakes hard to do. The biggest advantages to the sun oven is additional heat and deeper pots. The sport oven can see lower sun and wind is never a issue,
Hi Jin mat you at the rtr a the last two years I've been going, a Lady friend cooked me same rids in one and boy it tasted great, it folded up nicely, but I did not have the room in my small gmc van, this year I bought a 20 foot gmc rv so for sure I'll be getting one, thanks and looking forward to more on all the things you can do with solar cooking thanks
Jim you're looking good and Queenie and I could smell them ribs in Lower Alabamdama! I really like your videos cuz you explain things so well especially on solar..
Great Video on an under appreciated subject. On another subject, would you comment on out gassing by AGM batteries. I understand that as a general proposition AGMs are sealed and won't out gas; I also have read that they can out gas under high overcharging. What I would like to know is how likely and how to prevent this out gassing. Thank you for your generous giving of your time.
The sport oven is no longer being made? I want an Solar Oven that will stand up to the winds out here in the high desert. Any ideas? Places to purchase new or used? or how to secure the All American so winds don't tip it? Thanks so much for your great educational videos!
Just started watching your site after seeing you on Bob's ch with ac, got that sport cooker to and have done cakes, bread and of course ribs, great review. This is vid 3 for so onto wifi camera for rv 👍
Excellent Presentation bro!😍You aRe an awesome teacher!👍I haVe doinG been some SolaR oVen experiments with my Car Sunshade etC on my balcony as I haVe been tryinG to create a "Red Neck" experiment that iS super easy on the budget so that I can shaRe my idea foR Humanity's Benefit as I don't like to know that so many people around the WoRlD🌎🌏🌍 don't haVe access to our modern cookinG deviCes!😢Shine On and HaVe a BleSSed Day!✌😍🙏😇🌹🌞🌹☕🍵☕🍹🍻
Thank you Dan. Dark pans collect sunlight and convert it into heat. So they are a necessity with reflective cookers which only heat the pot. In the ovens in the video the whole oven gets hot as does anything in them no matter the color. Black pots will help produce more heat but that is not always a good thing. I prefer lighter colored pots when baking cakes,
Did you build them yourself id like to try to build one im on a tight budget working on paying off my debt and fixing my van and getting either a tow trailer or camper so i can hot the road once my kids are all off to college ty stay safe and god bless
Sweet potatoes in the oven are amazing! Curry Veggies, squash, rice, breads, cakes, enchiladas, tamales, ...oh wait, you just said veggies and bread. lol
Wow There are new things all the time. Thanks for keeping us informed. Can the temperature be controlled at all or is it just hot in sun and cool in shade? Can you give us an idea of the cost of one. Thanks
The two in the video are just below or just above $300. That includes pans, rakes, ect. I put a link for each in the description. You can control the heat some with the angle of the sun. Most of the time they are somewhere between 250 and 350 F. Also using different color pans can have a effect.
The easiest way to reduce clean up from cooking is to line your pan/pot with either parchment paper or a cooking bag. I use parchment paper in my fry pan and it either eliminates or vastly reduces the mess made while frying. A oven bag in the pot holding the ribs would have left no mess at all to clean up.
i have a home made one (using off and on since the 80's) you have any tips on keeping the glass from over steaming up?? some i get but mine is like rain... thanks
In solar ovens the inside temperature is like a real oven so I can put anything that fits in there, black enamel pans help create the heat but it is not always good. I make cakes in light colored pans so that the outside does not over cook before middle is done. In reflective cookers the pan creates the heat and must be black. You rarely add water except to rice and soups.
Hi Jim, I am currently looking for work and was wondering if you would recommend solar as a focus. Could you cover that in an episode or just reply here. THANKS
There are no knobs or easy way to regulate the heat. You can cool them down but the maximum heat they obtain is all you can get. To cool a bit you can turn them away from the direct sun or detune them. The sport oven's reflectors come off, you can cover the sun oven's reflectors some, use a none black pot or cover some of the black inside of the oven so that it does not absorb the light. The easiest way is to by the one that cooks at the temperatures you do.
Hay Jim, I was wondering if it is possible to put a solar panel in my class C where the window over the cab is. The over head is not a bed. It is actually 2 cabinets and in the center is where the TV is. I have been wondering if the window can be removed and a solar panel but in. Thanks
First you would have to find a panel to fit that area. Most cabover windows are not big, so it will not be a lot of watts. Then I would think a carpenter to frame in and seal the panel.
Thank you. I also want to say between this video and the RTR presentation I'm sold on the solar ovens. I wasn't able to ger up close for the demonstrations but what I heard and watched on your video they are great.
Tracking will heat the cookers up the fastest and reaches the highest temperatures. Once heated up they can be positioned so that the sun is left of center and allowed to move to the right of center before adjusting again.
@@solarboondocker4597 Thanks Jim, And out of the three ovens you have listed, Which oven would you recommend most? and do we need any special cookware? I'm not much of a cook but would be nice to have the right stuff when needed. Thanks, and as always, Thumbs UP on all of your videos.
@@RogerSayers All three of the cookers I most recommend can come in kits with the cookware. The Sport oven is my favorite because it can be used in the wind. The SunFlair is the slowest but folds up into a small package for ease of storage. The Sun oven gets the hottest and takes the deepest pans but it has to be protected from the wind or be knocked over.
@@solarboondocker4597 Thanks Jim... Points well made. I think I'll purchase the Sun Oven. I like it better because of the hotter temps and depth. I'm thinking the depth will make better room for the bigger pot, and that means more stew, soups, and a bigger roast. Heck even a fair size turkey breast for Thanksgiving dinner as I prefer white meat over dark. Anyway Thanks again Jim for your great videos and information. I hope to meet you one day be it at an RTR event or ????. I'm trying to get my Interstate 1 Load Runner car transport trailer converted so I can get out to an RTR event. @@RogerSayers You are welcome. I have done smaller whole turkeys in both the sun and the sport ovens. The largest pot I can fit in the sun oven is a 7 quart canner.

Both can be detuned if you take the time and are willing to fuss with sun angle. The SunFlair I linked is more like a crockpot because only the pot gets hot and it takes about twice as long. Other reflective cookers can be much more intense so it just depends on your cooking style.
Hey Jim. I gave this a thumbs up for a nice, well done video. But I do have a question... For those of us with plenty of solar, which I realize isn't most people, wouldn't a modern 6 qt pressure cooker be an all around better option? They're very fast, energy efficient, precise, and no need to worry about the weather.
Makes sense, although the sun for my 2290w of solar panels is free too. - What are some of the things you've found can only be cooked in a solar oven, or are best cooked in one? I've yet to find anything I can't cook well between my electric pressure cooker, convection oven, induction cook-top, or microwave. All electric running on free solar... just like the solar oven.
I would imagine if you're cooking for a small army, and you had 6 or 7 solar ovens, and the sun was shining strong for you then that would be a scenario but... how often do you do that? lol
breads, cakes, cookies, dry baked potatoes, anything that requires a long, low temperature cook to break it down. a whole turkey, just off the top of my head. Oh yeah, corned beef is amazing in a solar oven. Dry roasted but so moist and tender that it cuts with a butter knife.
I have 5 different solar ovens or cookers. For Thanksgiving I made a whole turkey, 4 dozen dinner rolls, 4 batches of corn bread, a pork shoulder ham, 4 quarts of yams and a double layer lemon cake. I also used my two burner electric stove and Microwave for other stuff with the power provided by my 1185 watts of solar. I consider that a different type of solar cooking as you do.
Makes sense. I use a bread maker and the convection oven on low for all that, and I never cook a whole turkey, though I know others do. - Wouldn't make sense for me, but I can see how it could for many others. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

One nice thing about solar cooking is the lower heat and nothing burns to the pans. Clean up is very easy
I love solar cooking in Texas. It is such a time saver during the summer and doesn't heat up the house. Great little ovens Jim!:
I enjoy and learn from all your videos. Thanks, Jim.
VERY interesting Jim. I had heard about these a few years ago, but never saw one actually being used. Great info!
I use them often enough that I hope to make it a weekly thing.
Nice, what a convenient alternative to a sauna of an RV while baking! Definitely giving this method a try, I love using the oven!

You can cook bread or anything as long as it is not fried or deep fried

Thank you for the information.
Yum!

How do you keep bugs and animals out?
They are sealed, nothing gets in, nothing gets out

I do not know what happened but I was seeing them on ebay
Solar Boondocker Thanks for the reply. I looked on ebay earlier today. I’ll keep looking. Saw you on Bob Wells channel!
How hot of a day was it when you did this? Does that make a difference?
it was in the 70's. Outside temperatures reall do not affect it much, I use them in below freezing to over 100 above.

which one is best for baking bread? Roast?
Either one for roast really. The sun oven is allowed to get hotter so it may be best for bread. Honestly I use both to make bread.
