I am from Texas. I always pulled for the Texas teams in the NBA, but when Larry Bird and those 80s Celtic teams were dominating the decade along with the Lakers, because of Larry Bird , and the beautiful team basketball concept that the Celtics employed, I was pulling for the Celtics against EVERYBODY! This includes against the Rockets in the 81, and 86 Finals... Larry and Magic literally saved the NBA. Television networks didn't even show the NBA playoffs live in those days. They would televise the games on tape delay AFTER the regular prime time The league was dying. attendance was down. There was very little interest among the average sports fan. Then Larry and Magic showed up and within just a few years professional basketball was not just relevant, it became " must - see".

Ive ;istened to all the sides of the debate over who the greatest basketball player was. I loved watching Jordan in college at NC and Wilt Chamberlain was great and so dominant, and of course there is Kareem, Kobe, Magic etc etc But when you break down all the facets of the game and look at each player there is only one player who was great in every facet of the game and that was Larry Bird. What made him super special was his head for the game. If Larry Bird is not the greatest he sure as hell is in the conversation. The man was the complete package.

I will always maintain that if Bird were Black, he would be considered the GOAT. People fans and critics would just say, you can't play basketball better than Larry Bird. He would be Pele of soccer and Jimi Hendrix of guitar heroes. But because the NBA has been dominated by Black super star players, Bird is a "top ten" player.

I was fortunate enough to be able to see Larry play in Indianapolis against the Pacers twice. I was also able to see him play in Larry’s Game a fund raiser for the Boys Club. He was the hardest working and hardest playing man I have ever seen play the game. Diving for lose balls and sacrificing his body on many occasions. I will never forget the time he went for the ball against the Pacers in Boston and broke the bones around his eye. He went to the locker room and then came back out to play and win the game. He could do things that most guards couldn’t do when passing the ball. He will be what his mother said, the Greatest Player Ever to play in the NBA. I have seen great players who could do a lot of things good but Larry did everything great. There will never be another Larry Bird.

MJ was great but he keeps on and on about Jordan did it all by himself. All he had was pippen. He did it all. Nobody on his team helped at all. Finally I posted this. Celtics without Bird 29-53. Celtics with Bird 61-21. The Bulls with Jordan 57-25. The Bulls without Jordan 55-27. You know I haven't heard from that guy since. I love this video. It shows Larry not only as the great player he was but a really nice guy too. Someone who had a lot of problems and a hard life but he never gave up. Well, I thank coach Hodges for pursuing Bird til he accepted his deal.
Larry is basketball well done, playing for the team always. The final minutes with the music of Hoosiers make me goosebumps, so much emotion and the real spirit of this beautiful sport. Team, team, team...
I was born in 1977, so I enjoyed the last years after the championships. I think those years showed the emotional part in Larry's career. Imho he was the best even those years.
Boston was competitive and his average stats the last four years, about 22 ppg, 9,,5 rpg, 7, 2 apg, 1,5 spg, 0,9 bpg, 46% fg, 37% 3g, 92% ft, are incredible playing with pain.
I have no doubt he is the best ever player and the most professional and I'll never forget him. In fact, in my NBA live mobile he is always the first player I'm looking for. It's a way of keeping his playing days alive.
Thanks Larry, there will never ever ever ever be another Larry Bird.

Basketball wasn’t just scoring and although Bird was one of the best shooters of all time with people all over him. But the reason I feel Bird was the best of all time is because of his hustle. That enabled him to get rebounds make great passes for assist etc. He was always moving without the ball. Total Basketball player

Yezlebron is bigger..more athletic.. I've seen most of the great players ..in 70s and 80s... N many films of the greats in the 50ss n 60ss.... If Larry wanted to average 40 points a game..no problem. If he wanted to lead the all time scoring list..he would have.there wasn't anything on the court he couldn't do.. that's why Larry joe bird.. was thee GOAT...

Who did not Larry own? Philadelphia 76er’s Dr. J was a fantastic rival, but like everyone, Larry came through in the clutch so many more times than anyone, Philadelphia took one title meeting Boston year after year until the finals with the Lakers. These were the glory days of basketball, Magic, Kareem, Dr. J, Then came Michael Jordan, but Larry owned them all winning more against the best and leading Boston in the clutch more than any other player I’ve seen, When someone like Bill Russell says he Larry Bird made him proud to be a Boston Celtic says it all......Larry Joe, the Legend. lucky to have been able to see him and all the greats play in this era.

@Mike I have lost the hatred and come to appreciate Larry and how great he was, but as a Laker fan, I can’t let this comment slide. Larry didn’t own Magic. They played for all the marbles 4 times counting college and Magic took 3 of them.
If there is any owning being done, it is Larry’s hide that is tacked up on the wall in Magic’s trophy room.

There are so many great players from different eras that it is just about impossible to compare but if I was going to start a team and build around that one player I'd take larry bird. I'd take him over any rookie I've ever seen play and I would take him in his prime. I've seen bird play with great talent, average talent and not so good talent. He's been a winner with all three. It's a team sport guys. Larry bird was great by himself, great with a team and a true leader

The way he described his grandmother made me think of mine. A godly, church-goin' lady who was loved by all who knew her and served everyone in the family however she could - even strangers!
Can hardly wait to see her again! I know I will because we both trusted in Jesus Christ to save us from the penalty of our sins. I hate most churches nowadays - too much politics and business, but I love the Lord and His Word, the old KIng James Bible!
I also love basketball and love to watch anything about Larry Legend!
