  • Australian Armoured Vehicles are rare breeds, and even more rare are the 1/35 scale model kits of these excellent vehicles. Here is the first part of my build series on one of the worlds rarest armoured vehicles that had a big sting in it from that amazing 76mm L23A1 gun in the Scorpion turret.

      Hi David, and welcome to the channel. Thank you for the lovely feedback and I'm sure Clayton would also be thankful for your kind thoughts.
      Clayton and I seem to share a similar philosophy when it comes to our purpose for producing videos of our builds. Whilst we have our own styles, it's obvious to viewers that we want to share exciting subjects, the techniques we use and build an online community of modellers who are passionate about the hobby. Hopefully we can keep you entertained

    Really happy when I saw that you were doing this build. Not too many Aussie kits around, and it's important that we don't forget our own military. I have the Australian M113 from Academy, so keen to see how this one compares. I'm sure that you'll weave you usual magic. Cheers.

      Cheers Chris. I understand that this kit shares some parts with the Academy kits. Not sure which but it's interesting to see how these things get around.

    Good job Stew. I have this and the older version in the stash... There was a sigh of despair when this was released because it devalued the old one in the stash by around $250! 😉😆 THere goes the retirement fund!

    • @BlackHatScaleModels
      @BlackHatScaleModels  4 месяца назад

      haha I know the feeling Clayton. I had access to buy one of those early AFV Club kits and then the release of this updated version was announced. Guess we will have to rely on those genuine 70's and 80's Tamiya kits to fund our retirements now. I better stop building them or I'll be eating tinned food at 70 haha

  • @lesthiele4921

    That turned out to be a great build, like you said, it's ashame that a company can bring out a great kit, BUT parts for are missing or are called out wrong, Tamiya are still the best kits on the market, best regards from a Kiwi living in Melbourne, Les

    • @BlackHatScaleModels
      @BlackHatScaleModels  4 месяца назад

      Yep, Tamiya are still the bench mark for well engineered kits that simply fall together they are so easy.
      I found this kit wasn't one I could switch my mind off whilst building it. The instructions had errors. Often it was as simple as saying the part I needed was E35... but I'd find they nominated the wrong spur it would be B35. Sometimes the alignment of parts isn't clear. Simple errors that I find frustrating.
      That said Les, lucky I am very familiar with the vehicle because I just pushed my way through it. It's not difficult, just frustrating I guess.
      Nice to see you here mate. I'll be down your way next month for Model Expo. Hope your going ?

    We never mounted .50 cal on MRVs. And the Jerry can holder on the rear was standard. The 2 on the turret bin cam late 80s. Just sayin!

    • @BlackHatScaleModels
      @BlackHatScaleModels  4 месяца назад

      Hi Peter, thanks for the comments mate. As I understand it, there was at least 1 prototype that had a .50 cal mounted coaxially. That came from an ex-RAEME guy who worked on the development of the MRV at Bandiana. Like so much of the history of these and other AFV's, I wish I had photo's available to prove/dis-prove such information. He also told me about a water test prior to the fitment of the flotation pods where a swimming MRV traversed its turret and rolled over. The good old days prior to WH&S hey.
      Thanks for the tip about the jerry cans. I remember a couple of MRV's at 8/13 and 4/19 that did not have the jerry's mounted to the hull on the left of the ramp. If they were standard fit then somehow those vehicles had been modified.
      The best part of this hobby is that there are so many people who have knowledge and are willing to share it. Really appreciate you reaching out. It all adds to the bank of information available. Cheers

    Really liked the reference photos at the start and the history throughout.
    I'm interested to see how you paint all the fiddly little bits while they are glued on. My approach to the more intricate bits has been to paint them first and then glue, but if there is a better way then I'm all ears.

    • @BlackHatScaleModels
      @BlackHatScaleModels  4 месяца назад +1

      Not really better... just my way of doing things. I do actually prefer to paint tools etc off the model then fix them after. But in recent times that has changed a little depending on the paint I'm using. For example, Mission Models can be tricky so I paint the tolls on the vehicle. If I'm using Tamiya, they are a little more hardy and I'll often paint tools off the vehicle.
      Sometimes it just depends on my mood haha. I actually don't think one way is better than the other. Do what you are comfortable with is my advice.

    A full interior + engine would be the crown jewel for this kit.

    • @BlackHatScaleModels
      @BlackHatScaleModels  4 месяца назад +1

      100%. There's a partial interior... fuel tank, drivers compartment, radios and harness... but the key things like turret basket, ammo racks, engine and transmission are not included. Whilst I can scratch build much of it, the turret basket and turret interior would probably mean buying a Scorpion kit to scavenge them. It's kind of like how committed am I..... mmmm, maybe a future project. Would be good as a ramp down diorama on the firing line at Pucka.

      @@BlackHatScaleModels later than that. We still had carriers in 96. A and B sqn where first to get the ASLAV. The MRV outside RHQ was/is still a runner. I knew.tim when he was in ops in RHQ. @BlackHatScaleModels na I am not into a club although I wouldn't mind comparing my work with others to get a benchmark. But it's not a about chest beating, just enjoyment as each individuals perception of what something looks like is different. I am on a TPI and service pension, gold card etc after getting banged up overseas. Living with our son and his missus full time babysitting our granddaughter here in brissy whilst they are both doing the Army thing. I do modelling as a therapy really. Aussie Armour but my project now is a merkava mk4 rolling through gaza ! Diorama.

      your attitude to model building is admirable. I like chatting to mates about what we build. I love teaching what I know and learning from whomever is willing to show me how they do stuff. Years ago (25 years ago) I was entering local competitions. It got a bit crazy so I stopped. Now I do a RUclips channel haha.
      I really enjoy the hobby from all aspects and am returning to the comps this year... mainly to see what's what and share experiences.
      Great to have you on the channel Dave. This is the best therapy I know and it's saved a lot of my ex-service mates. Please drop on by and ask questions or share your thoughts whenever you care to. I know there's a lot of ex-service people lurking on the channel
