  • News documentary from 1968 hosted by George Foster, exploring the legacy of oppression that remains over 100 years after the abolition of that peculiar intitution. In Part 1, Foster visits Charleston, SC and speaks with both descendents of slaves and slave owners. The cameras capture a sermon by Rev. Henry Butler of the Mother Emmanuel AME Church (where Denmark Vesey planned an unsuccessful slave revolt in 1822 and Dylan Roof would later kill 9 church members in 2015). In Part 2, the cameras go to Mississippi to speak with former sharecroppers and political activist FANNIE LOU HAMER. In the final segment, we travel to Chicago, where Prof. JAMES TURNER and activist CALVIN LOCKRIDGE educate young people about revolution. Ebony Magazine editor and historian LERONE BENNETT offers a poignant analogy to describe the times we are in today. From www.archive.org Assumed to be in the Public Domain.

    I'm 61 years old. My parents moved to Brooklyn NY in 1962, I was 3, my sister 2. We would go down south to visit in North Carolina (their home) and stop at a gas station and i'd say mom i have to go to the bathroom. She'd take me and when we got back to the car she said to pop...."I'm so sick of this shit down here, i dont know what to do". Just like that. I didnt know what was going on, i'm just 5 years old. I didnt find out what that was about until i was grown and asked her. She said the gas satation attendent sent us to the back of the gas station and she pull my pants down and i pissed in the woods. That was 1964 in Virginia, just before getting on The Chesapeak Bay Bridge Tunnel, on our way to Severn, North Carolina.

      God bless your parents souls. My mom worked in a factory, in the mid 60's she was big pregnant, due anytime... The white woman said "the heat from the machine making my tummy hurt" the supervisor said to my (black) mother, work at the same machine? My mother said but I have a baby in my stomach? They said all sorts but my mother said no and walked out and never went back.It was me in her tummy. These people truly saw us as a lowest form of humans and still do to this day. Both my parents are gone too and dearly missed.

      My (Black) US History from 1865 professor was born in probably the early 1950s (he was like 11-13 when JFK was killed), & he grew up in California. When he was like 8, his family drove cross the Sun Belt to visit family in the South. After the family entered TX, the gas stations they'd stop at to gas up, stretch their legs, use the restroom, get something to eat, etc. would get further & further apart. Once they finally stopped at a station, my professor, being an 8-year-old, eagerly started towards the station like usual, only for his dad, who normally NEVER physically touched his kids, to grab him by his arm to pull my professor back. My professor was very confused by his family then having to go to the back of the station, where they ate surrounded only by other Black people. His parents explained the full situation to him a few years later.

They are lying, they knew exactly what Black people were going through! They were happy to oppress them and murder them... just like the Germans knew that all those Jewish people were being murdered and just tried to cover it up when they got caught.

Those days Portugal a crimal colonial dictatorship country. Murdering millions of Africans and draining the African colonies of theirs wealth, up to the 1970s. Now, today I believe racism is the same inside just more political correct on the outside. And the theft more suffisticated.

    Another thing that is so starkly evident in this film is that the African Americans of 1968 were talking about making changes in all kinds of ways. They were sober, clear headed and knew what needed to be done and were prepared to do it! This is why drugs were unleashed on African America soon after Nixon was elected president in November 1968. The intent was to neutralize the discontent of inner city Black folks. It worked and we haven't been the same since!!

Most blacks and whites live in a bubble out of fear. If you treat people the way you want to be treated...creating and sharing the same opportunities for education, housing and jobs this country would not be crumbling before our eyes. When you stir up the wind you create a whirlwind. 400 years of physical bondage is in the past. Blacks must come together; transcend victimhood and accept responsibility for the breakdown of family. Whites must deny white superiority over blacks.These attitudes are ungodly. Return to God and morality. Hate is not the answer. Only then will America be great again.

      @Gemini530 4 года назад

      mulattoraver ... Why would you re-enact this interview with me when I have not experienced having a slave. My position is merely based on what I have read in books and stories that were told. Here, the person being interviewed was being TRUTHFUL and unfiltered. His position is what matters the most.

    • @mulattoraver
      @mulattoraver 4 года назад

      Alexander A I’m simply interested to know why our views are so different when it comes to this video. What is it you see that I don’t? I find the video upsetting, but you seem dismissive of that because of what you read. Okay. So why don’t you educate me? What should I have read?
      I wrote down the interview questions, and I see now that it would be unfair to ask you to answer them. Here they are anyway. Some of them are somewhat paraphrased.
      1. Do you think slavery is immoral?
      2. What was life like in those early days?
      3. What do you think are the differences between the races?
      4. Is it possible that the white man has something to do with the failure of the black man to assimilate?
      5. What has tended to make you more liberal?
      6. What did you think of us before you thought of us as human beings?
      The interview is a valuable historical record, but I wonder how many people still think of black people as high functioning pets.
      Maybe we could reword the questions for a modern interview. Slavery is gone but racism and oppression are still here.
      1. Do you think racism is immoral?
      2. What is life like for minorities these days?
      3. What do you think are the differences between the races?
      4. Is it possible that white privilege has something to do with the failure of the black man to escape oppression?
      5. What has tended to make you more liberal?
      6. What do you think of black people?
      The questions are rather stiff, but a modern version of the interview would be something like that.
      Anyway, my guess is that you won’t answer this comment, because it’s getting rather long and useless. It was nice talking to you though.

    • @Gemini530
      @Gemini530 4 года назад

      mulattoraver ... Our views may not even be different about how bad slavery was. The difference is, I don’t hate the present for something that happened in the past. And I also understand that people and moral standards back then were very different. But yes, let me go ahead answer your questions.
      1. Slavery is immoral
      2. Can’t answer because I did not live in those times.
      3. There are a lot of differences in races. Culture, traditions, history, values and principles, etc
      4. Yes and naturally so. There’s always majority resistance against ANY minorities in ANY country or situation. For instance, Muslim countries for years, even today, have struggled with Christians assimilating in their land.
      5. I’m more conservative than liberal.
      6. I’ve always thought of any person as a human being.
      Racism and oppression will always exist. Unfortunately, racism exists in us all. You can lie about it, but you are racist as well. Just at different levels. Oppression is a result of extreme racism that should not be tolerated and is already a crime. Now to answer your 2nd set of questions.
      1. Racism is not always immoral. Could simply be a preference or opinion or sometimes a fact.
      2. There will always be difficulties and challenges when you are part of a minority group. But the US is the best in the world when it comes to protecting their minorities and enforcing equality.
      3. Culture, traditions, history, values and principles, etc
      4. Advantage yes, privilege no. Being part of the majority group will always have its advantages over someone who is in the minority group. Always remember that the majority will always rule, never the minority.
      5. I’m more conservative than liberal
      6. I think a lot of black people are messed up with their thinking.

      Cynthia X please dont dump all the white folks into the same category. Not ALL whites are racists. Many many whites find these stories repulsive and degrading and are ashamed of the ancestors who participated in slavery. In history,there have been whites, Indians, Chinese, and others who were enslaved, its never been only about blacks being enslaved,at least as far as History is concerned. ALL races have suffered through enslavement at some point. But the thing i have trouble trying to understand is this, slavery has been over with for over 100 yrs. . But yet it seems to me that blacks are still in that "slavery days mindset" and havent let it go. Most HATE white folks for what happened to their ancestors that noone alive even remembers. Im not trying to pick a " utube keyboard warrior" battle with you or anyone else. So please dont take it that way.ok? Im not attempting to offend you or anger you ,or Heaven forbid, hurt anyones feelings. I just want to gain a better understanding of WHY grudges and hatred are still so much in todays society. I Despise the fact that ANY race has been enslaved and treated like they dont matter. History tends to repeat itself at times, i pray to our God in Heaven that never happens again . Hopefully ,before i leave this world , that these issues have been resolved and ALL races can live in PEACE & HARMONY. The song lyrics from "Heal the World" by Michael Jackson will always come to my mind when there are race issues going on. MJ was an awesome ,talented and beautiful human being that loved "everybody" the same , i wish the rest of us could. God bless you and your family. De Klerk in South Africa in 86 said about the same thing. And devised a plan to wipe us out. If things that happened in the past stayed in the past with realistic restitution then the entire conversation would be different. As it stands, it didn't. The legacy of those evils are strategically, clandestinely, and sometimes not so clandestinely being perpetuated to this day.
      People who don't appreciate conversations about it aren't considering the ones who are still living under the ugly. They're tired of hearing about it, we're tired of living it.

The scariest thing is that not much has changed since 1968 when they spoke about slavery as if it happened 10 years ago. You weren't listening to the video. The narrator specifically said those strong black people were "a minority of a minority" and in the closing scenes said that most blacks wanted "to be in the white man's parade." We've made virtually no social or political progress whatsoever. The "get along to get along" attitude alive today was alive and kicking back then. First and foremost, black people just want to have a peaceful existence in America. Standing up and fighting against white supremacy pretty much guarantees no peace. So most choose not to fight but instead choose/beg to assimilate.

    I had the privilege to know
    A graceful elderly friend named Ms Mattie who lived in Mountpleasant
    SC off Charleston. She
    Was born at the Boone
    Hall plantation .her parents
    Were slaves. Ms.Mattie
    Took me for a tour to the
    Boone Hall plantation.
    I saw rows of small brick
    Cottages were the slaves
    Lived. The floor was dirt.
    She also showed me the smoke house where the
    Slaves smocked sausage
    And leftover meat the
    Masters did not est. She
    Took me inside the big house . Apparently the
    Movie Gone with the
    Wind was filmed there.
    It is a beautiful place.
    Since I am not born in
    America I did not connect
    But I feel hurt. But Ms Mattie was always pleasant. I appreciated
    Her warm hospitality. May
    She RIP.

      Yes!! She needs more recognition, a lot of black people know nothing of her. I love the portion she spoke about our blood is drenched in the flag.. especially with all the stuff going on in the NFL today.

    We are still suffering as black people today we must unite and instead of trying to leap over each other let's work together and create businesses, property, and financial wealth

    When people say "slavery was so long ago" "I had nothing to do with it" , BUT your grandmother did. This was recorded in 68....

    • @GirladyLocks
      @GirladyLocks 4 года назад +1

      WRONG! MY grandmother ( God rest her soul ) had absolutely nothing to do with this crap. And many didn't. In fact, many died to free slaves and many were abolitionists. Quakers never EVER believed they were better than anyone else and many people just by their nature or religion didn't think so, either. Generalizing a group of people by color is racist. So don't generalize with white people, either, because the truth of the matter is that most white people were against slavery and did NOT have the mindset of these creeps in this interview. Never label a person by their color or race or religion. It's not OK for *anyone* to do that. There are no double standards.
