Another one I should mention: Pandoras tower. Although the original game does not allow for a continuation, but a different story can be handled, but with a similar concept to the original game. New protagonist, new damsel in distress, another curse, a different tower, etc. Even if someone draws a spiritual successor from this gem. Honorable Mention: Secret of evermore, the official SoM mod. The bad thing is that it was an idea of the extinct Square USA, so Square Enix probably doesn't even have the rights to the IP. Hopefully companies like limited run games will manage to rescue it and give the green light to a hypothetical sequel. Or that the IP is renewed
This is the game that got me hooked on the timing-based battle system, which lead to my interest in Shadow Hearts. I probably would have skipped Shadow Hearts if not for Legend of Dragoon.
Skies of Arcadia doesnt need a sequal it needs a remake with the mechanics almost completely unchanged. Or at least a remaster. Eternal Sonata, Jean D'Arc, and Lost Odyssey all need a port.
So this might surprise you but vanilla ware actually put out a q&a after the success of unicorn overlord and they inquired in the q&a if fans would want a sequel to unicorn overlord which I said yes to
Awesome list like always, brother. I just wanted to give my opinion that I love Vanillaware for what they do. Especially how many companies are afraid to try something new. Vanillaware is known for their quality titles and that they’re always different. I hope they stay like that and that they avoid a sequel unless they really have too and they have to split a game like Trails in the Sky 1 and 2. I wouldn’t mind a very long game like that lol but I know a lot of people will complain that it’s too long so I believe that’s the only time Vanillaware should make a sequel is if they run into a situation like that. Other than that I love their games and the reputation they’ve established of releasing a standalone game every time they make one.
No Brave Soul is an Old Japanese Adult Game on the PC with Full Voice Over and Patched in English with great Retro RPG elements. The game does not take itself seriously as it has many humors and has many settings you can select from for NG+ that you can unlock as well as easily be broken to speed through its 100 or more floor bonus dungeon? You might think Strength is important there as the MC uses a big sword but Attack and Movement Speed do a lot more and if you have weights to put on your keyboard you can easily auto-level there. It also has 2 catching Japanese songs that are a must in my opinion. If anyone is interested I have a playlist on it on my channel.
Sakaguchi actually debunked the story about Final Fantasy's name last year during the 35th anniversary interviews. He originally wanted to call it Fighting Fantasy as the gamebooks of the same name were a big part of the projects inspiration. Obviously they couldn't do that because of copyright, but they wanted to keep the FF alteration. "Final" was just the word that sounded best to them. The urban legend got started organically, and because it was more poetic that the actual story, Sakaguchi just went along with it for all those years. Go check out "Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary Special Interview | Part 1 of 2" if you want to see the whole thing. 8:25 timecode.
I'll add another one. For PS1 "Thousand Arms." Probably one of the funniest JRPGs out there. Part JRPG, Part Dating Sim, but mostly comedy. Combat system sucks but the rest of the game is really fun. One of the few anime games I would say actually works well dubbed because the whole premise of the game is cheesy, so cheesy dubbing just enhances the experience.
I'm a firm believer that Skies of Arcadia doesn't need a sequel. The game's about exploration, and you basically explore the entire world by the end of the game. Unless you go to space or do a Final Fantasy sequel where it's not the same world, there's no point.
The only reason it didn't get a sequel is because of its low sales. Otherwise a sequel would definitely happen and if it ever happens if should DEFINITELY have the same most loveable and underrated cast in JRPG history but with a more mature and serious story and tone than the original.
Vanillaware has my respect for not relying on sequels and doing new things, but a Unicorn Overlord sequel or prequel would be awesome to me because there aren't many games that utilize its unique combat style. I think it would be better if they made an entirely different game with a different title and setting to keep it fresh. I just want another game with a similar concept.
I'm looking for rpg games on the switch. Something with a level up system that feels like your unit is growing like If they use a small fire ball to start later it's a massive one. Through use. Or a direct combat one with ys like combat.
For PS1 Azure Dreams. It can be a short game if you only focus on getting through the Monster Tower, but you have your town that you can drastically upgrade and 8 people to bond with. Also 'fun' little snippet about Rogue Galaxy(Spoiler!!!!) When you do the Ghost Ship during post game on the PS4 if you save it keeps your progress. On the PS2 it doesn't
Skies of Arcadia в свой время прошел на DreamCast, спустя годы прошёл версию для GameCube но уже на Эмуляторе. Одна из любимых игр вообще, до сих пор жду продолжение или хотя бы ремастер\ремейк
Astral chain is definitely most likely getting another game. Don’t know if it will be a direct sequel but Nintendo bought the ip. No way they are going to do nothing with it. In fact, it’s been rumored more then once that another astral chain game is coming. Just have no idea when 😂.
I recently watched an old interview with Gene Siskel interviewing Steven Spielberg. He asked if he was ever going to make an ET sequel. Spielberg said no, the story is done. They went off on their way and that is it. Nothing more to say.
When the games are this good, you end up wanting a sequel so there can be more of it... but you never know if that might end badly or even tarnish the original. Vanillaware is very impressive for sticking to that philosophy when it seems like every other company is relying on yearly iteration franchises or endless remakes. Would love a Unicorn Overlord 2 though.
Sky of arcadia was great game. But I don't blame sega for not listening. Because they released it twice and no one brought it. so, why release it a third time. But Lost Odyssey on the other hand is a different case, we don't need a sequel we need ports... especially for Switch, playstation and PC in that order.
They released SoA twice on consoles which were commercial failures, I wonder why it didn't sell well ? As much as I wouldn't blame Sega too much for not wanting to release a real Shining Force or a Dragon Force (although), since these are niche games, as much as for Skies of Arcadia and Story of Thor, I will always be among the first to yell at them. Yoh, who would buy a console for any of these games (remake or sequel)... as long as they are not games full of micro transactions :(.
I feel like several popular RPG's have already shown they can be a sequel without being a direct story follow up sequel and be fine. Final Fantasy as a series only has a few direct sequels and you don't have to play them before the next game. Dragon Quest, Elder Scrolls, Tales of games, and more are the same. And saying it can't be different characters is like saying you couldn't leave FF8 behind to have FF9 which would mean no Vivi and those are fighting words...
Pity Rogue Galaxy "HD" in PS4/PS5 is far from HD quality. Makes it unplayable for me. Wish they could fix that or make a better port next time. Skies of Arcadia and Lost Oddysey are prime candidates for a good REMAKE! Radiata Stories and Radiant Historia are good candidate for remaster in current or next gen.
Chrono Cross exists and Another Eden is basically a remake of Chrono Trigger by the creator but not by Square. Xenogears transformed into Xenosaga and into Xenoblade. So it's not like there isn't a sequel for lack of trying. There just isn't an official sequel but the ideas are expanded upon in different games by the same creators.
Lost Oddyssey is a weird case, because is widely available, you can just buy it for the Xbox one or Series degitally because is the retro compatible, so it really doesn't need a re release,. but also the game feels really dated if you compare it to modern JRPG so it would benefit from a remake, but i really don't think Microsoft would do it, but hey crazier thing had happended like the return of Perfect Dark which i believe was super dead.
I know there's many RPGs to list that do not have sequels or prequels but -- How can you not mention the one and only; The Legend Of Dragoon!? That game is STUCK on PS1, it was re-released digitally but, never updated graphically or anything. >.
1:01 Maybe because Valkyria Chronicles / Skies of Arcadia / (original) Sakura Wars dev team (AM1+AM7 R&D) simply don't exist now in Sega. No developer = no games. The only one way it's outsourcing, but this usually ends as a low budget disaster.
I agree Rogue Galaxy doesn't need a sequel and Eternal Sonata probably doesn't. I would like to see one for Scarlet Nexus but don't know how it would be done. It was such a good game and underrated in my opinion.
Time stamps:
0:16 #10 - Skies of Arcadia
1:33 #9 - Radiata Stories
2:49 #8 - The Last Story
4:00 #7 - Sands of Destruction
5:20 #6 - Rogue Galaxy
7:00 #5 - Eternal Sonata
8:12 #4 - Radiant Historia
9:23 #3 - Jeanne D'Arc
10:47 #2 - Lost Odyssey
12:17 #1 Vanillaware
MVP❤, thanks
Another one I should mention: Pandoras tower.

The Legend of Dragoon, obviously. But that game really should have gotten a sequel, because so many people were ready for more.
This is the game that got me hooked on the timing-based battle system, which lead to my interest in Shadow Hearts. I probably would have skipped Shadow Hearts if not for Legend of Dragoon.
Ahh yeah. I love this game

I'm surprised the legend of dragoon isn't on this list.
Maybe he thought it was too obvious. I can't find a better explanation. I hope he makes another similar video.
Yaaayyy. Finally my suggestion has been made into a video. Great collection Man! 👍👍👍
So this might surprise you but vanilla ware actually put out a q&a after the success of unicorn overlord and they inquired in the q&a if fans would want a sequel to unicorn overlord which I said yes to
If not a remake for Radiata Stories to clean up the battle system then at least a remaster or even a port… I would be happy lol
This game is so incredibly good, it makes me want to kick random things to see what falls out.
Threads of Fate anyone?😢
I own an Xbox 360 just to play Lost Odyssey. It is the only 360 game I've ever bought. So worth it.
Know digital devil saga is 2 games but damn thats a perfect series.
I wish Alundra never had a sequel 😪

With that companies do to games the first time around somethings are *BEST* left untouched.

The ost is very good. It just a game i hold dearly because of the memory i have with my sisters
@@renren5660I love that. I will play it today on your recommendation.
Another great one Erick you're quite steady in my recommendations lol.
I'm a firm believer that Skies of Arcadia doesn't need a sequel.
The game's about exploration, and you basically explore the entire world by the end of the game. Unless you go to space or do a Final Fantasy sequel where it's not the same world, there's no point.
Now, does it need a spiritual successor? YES. I desire another sky ship Age of Exploration RPG.
@@SuperLlama42 Agreed, but it would be neat to see more of say, finding out about the supposed Black Moon and the like
The only reason it didn't get a sequel is because of its low sales.

@@erikahalloway2637 either or would be great. Baten Kaitoa got a remaster recently
Lost Odyssey still looks awesome. A game that doesn't need remastering - just more platforms! Never played it.
In Octopath Traveler you can basically recruit all NPCs to fight besides you.
Would love to see a remake or remaster of Skies of Arcadia but it does not need a sequel
Sand of Destruction was an interesting game that I unfortunately never finished. I only ever knew about it due to the anime from years ago.
Vanillaware has my respect for not relying on sequels and doing new things, but a Unicorn Overlord sequel or prequel would be awesome to me because there aren't many games that utilize its unique combat style. maybe the grandia series?
astral chain
WitchSpring R, Tokyo Xanadu, Gothic Classic (non JRPG), Outward (non JRPG), NEO: The World Ends with You (aka NEO: TWEWY)
For PS1 Azure Dreams. It can be a short game if you only focus on getting through the Monster Tower, but you have your town that you can drastically upgrade and 8 people to bond with.

What a great list and a great video!
radiata stories was a fun and amazing grind. i miss that game.
I still refuse to believe that legaia 2 was a sequel. Legend of legaia stands on it's own...
Damn, not great then ay? Ok I'll skip 1 game from my endless abyss hahaha
Radiant Historia is just perfect
Skies of Arcadia в свой время прошел на DreamCast, спустя годы прошёл версию для GameCube но уже на Эмуляторе. Одна из любимых игр вообще, до сих пор жду продолжение или хотя бы ремастер\ремейк

I’d be happy if The Last Story got a remaster in modern consoles.
Rogue galaxy, radiant historia - These games need re-releases for new platforms. Great games.
Rogue Galaxy is the only one on this list that I have played, that's a great game
so many that i always wanted to play

Unicorn Overlord NEEDS a sequel its too good to be left alone
Some really great games!
The Last Remnant and Pandora's Tower😢
Stella Glow is one of those JRPG’s deserving of a sequel.
It’s not like that game’s predecessor ‘Luminous arc’ didn’t get any sequels….oh wait…
The development team of Sands of Destruction has disbanded, iirc
My main issues with Rogue Galaxy is the poor ending and the farming. That much farming sucks AF!
please no more jeandarc sequel,
I've spent more time feeding the frog weapons than playing the game lmao
Infinite Undiscovery!!!!
Wasn't a spiritual successor of skies of arcadia in development?

Considering how long JRPGs tend to be..........
Hey don’t give anyone ideas. All they go do is mess it up
Those games may not need sequels, but many of them sure do need Emulators so newer gamers can experience them.
Destin Expressway
I always loved radianta stories, a remaster would be amazing and the graphics don’t even need to be touched up because the game just looks so good
No sequels, so prequels then😂. The First Story please!
