Thanks for sharing this video. I have a question for you. I had an ackie for about 6 months then he passed. I had bought him from a reptile show and he was awesome for the short time i had him. Let me hold him pet him whatever i wanted to do he was cool about it. Now i bought another one thinking i would get the same kind of lizard but not the case. This one which i have for a year will not just let me hold him, the most i can do is pet him. I didnt try to actually pick him up because i know he wont approve of it.. what advice can you give me I really would like to be able to handle him like my first one. Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Ackies are a severely and criminally underrated reptile. The videos and info on them are also so sparse. It’s nice to see another rather larger scale reptile RUclipsr cover them and bring them to the spotlight. While I’d hate to see them come to the big box pet trade, I’d love for more RUclipsrs to cover them and give them the attention they deserve

I just got my ackie last Friday! Immediately realized that the 40gal that I set up was not going to cut it so I’m setting up my zen habitat 4x2x2 :-)

Your video very well put together with great information. There is a big but for me though I want to address. You have bought 3 baby Ackies from a breeder at a show together. There is very high chance those 3 same age hatchlings are siblings. But you are hoping to be able to breed them together if you have opposite sexs with standing of course. My issue is I believe alot of people who get reptiles, amphibians or even arthropods will often try get at same time from same place.. I just fear this can and will weaken the gene pool for others down the line with of course genetic problems and set backs.

Just ordered a 4x4x2 from zen to give mine plenty of room to dig and climb. Might expand it to double up the size down the road if I decide to co-gab / pair them up

Im going to be getting an ackie soon. I was going to go for an argus but i have three small kids and that might have some issues so i chose the happy meal monitor. I love monitors so much. They really are like little raptors, so smart and curious. My tegu just chills like a potato lol. Like the hair man very Danny Phantom.

I got my Ackie when I paid for a Tristis back in 2020 but the place I ordered from had left the order page on the website unchanged even though they ran out of Tristis and I didn't find out until a few days before shipping. I was planning on getting an Ackie anyway and they had one left so when they offered him instead I figured why not. I'm still waiting for a Tristis eventually but I love my Ackie to bits.
He reminds me a lot of birds rather than other lizards. The way he interacts with and inspects his surroundings and the kind of things he enjoys doing. His little grey eyes and his head bobbing and tilting seems like those of corvids. So I use advice for giving birds enrichment as inspiration for things he might enjoy.
He also, strangely, reminds me a lot of my pet hamsters and mice from when I was a kid. So I bought him small mammal things for his enclosure and none of them have been a let down.
So yeah, to enrich small monitors? Small mammal and bird toys and hides all work a charm. Benny especially liked his wooden rat hide box full of old odd socks before my Children's Python stole it. Now I'll have to buy him another one since it's hers now. But he doesn't mind the empty tea bag and coffee pod boxes until then.
He also goes absolutely crazy for beef (ground/minced or gravy) and will do all sorts of things to get it. Way more effective training treat than insects and also good for when he's feeling a bit sick and won't eat. Benny ALWAYS has room for a little bit of watered down beef gravy in a bottlecap. He'll drink it dry.

It's interesting to see that they aren't immediately hopping up on you. Out of the 4 ackies that I've bought, 3 were fairly skittish as babies and juveniles. However, one was as friendly as an emerald tree skink right from the start when I got him at 2 weeks old. About half the babies I've produced with him have been similarly friendly, so I suppose there's a good chance it's genetic. I currently have eggs cooking from him and an unrelated female, so we'll see if it's recessive, dominant, or something else.

Thank you for talking about co-habing. I was wondering about that. I never seem to see anyone with less than two, and I only want one. I was worried that having only one would be bad for it, and you have solved that for me!

I’ve been thinking about getting an Ackie for a long time. I have zero experience with monitors and that’s what’s holding me back. But I’m continuing my research and when I’m comfortable I’ll definitely get one. So I’m looking forward to further videos of yours, featuring these beautiful Ackies!!🦎❤️🦎

Monitor lizards are possibly the coolest and my favourite of all lizards. If only more species were reasonable to keep as pets. These are a dream species but rather complex and need huge enclosures.

They are so easy to take care of especially with like a 30 gallon tank or larger all you do is go and feed and watch how amazing they are gives some fruits and vegetables once in a while but not that often but those guys are vicious littyeah vicious little godzilla animals

    • @acoustixcs9950

They do not eat fruits and vegetables, they are almost exclusively insectivores with the addition of other proteins like egg/chicken/small rodents/small lizards such as anoles. Their bodies are not built to digest fruits or vegetables
