      Smart
      Happyness

      And awesomeness , because you woudnt want to watch him unless he was stinking awesome

    • @xpandor_6914
      @xpandor_6914 4 года назад +19

      Its gonna come down to our 5 categories, lets start with handleability:
      Clint gets a 1.5 out of 5 for handleability because he is a person and you shouldnt
      handle people that much, he does not get 0 though because i bet he wouldnt reject
      a hug from a fan
      Our next category is care:
      for care we give Clint a 2 out of 5, people are very expensive to care for because
      of bills, a house/rent, food, entertainment, and more. All of this can be very
      expemsive for the unprepared novice human caretaker
      For hardiness, our next category:
      We give Clint 4 out of 5, this is because since humans are warm-blooded
      temperature is not an issue for them, but they should not be kept at
      extreme temperature for long.
      Next is Availability:
      For availability we give Clint a 0 out of 5, this horrible score is because
      there is only one Clint out of 7 billion people and he is not available for sale
      For upfront costs, our next category:
      we give Clint a 0 out of 5 because humans are very expensive to care for
      as said before.
      In total we give Clint a 1.5 out of 5, in general people arent that great as pets;
      Have a nice day!

    Ackies are an easy favorite for us. I have worked with reptiles over 25 years now and had many species in that time. A lot of information you gave here is applicable and some not so much. The enclosure and Powersun specifically are not what I'd suggest and I don't use coconut coir with anything. They aren't cheap. That much is true and we typically sell out what we decide to part with super quickly.. like spoken for before they even meet their first bug!(yes, we breed reds and yellows) We aren't the cheapest breeder out there but guaranteed you get what you pay for in quality. We selectively breed them so their colors and patterns are quite vibrant. Stop by and see for yourself.(our videos aren't fantastic but click through to our Facebook and you'll see what I mean) Good effort. Go ackies!

      Honestly, a smaller male might work in that but larger is definitely better. If using a 40G breeder we usually suggest covering all lid area where the light isn't coming through with something to hold in heat and moisture. More is always better and they will use every inch provided. Check out our care sheet for my take on keeping. Always do more research but consider the source. Do they keep them or make them? How's the quality? etc.. can be said of any species. www.reptiletalk.net/ridgetail-monitor/

      Extreme Exotics hello there dear friend yes rat snakes and bullsnake makes perfect snakes for starters about bullsnakw they are very big and builded heavy for not being a constrictor tho they may look menacing cuz of the scale they have in theire eyes they are docile as fuck they come in many cool morphs they have such a vast hunger they constently eat so it might be a bit hard when you wanna handle them and take them out of viv cuz they think you feeding them but once out he is more docile than a little cat they also have a strong hissing sound trust me it sounds like ripping a tire lmaoo tho its nothing they dont bite i suggest you really get a bullsnake they are big and heavy build just like most pythons tho mostly they grow from 6 to 8 feet so not retic or burmese type of size as i said they love to eat tho are smart animals and awesome hope i helped as for rat snakes you have so much choices to choose from that is up to you if you want to ask for a certain ratsnake feel free to ask

    I have a Surinam Horned Frog (I named him Jabba) and he is so much fun to have, especially when he eats...I didn’t think I’d ever see a frog eat a mouse, but he continues to amaze me! Plus he’s so easy to take care of too, not needing too much space since all he really does is sit in 1 spot. The only thing I’m unsure about is how to go about handling him...I know generally you aren’t supposed to handle amphibians, but I really want to try handling him. Is it safe for me to handle him? Will it hurt him in any way?

    An ackie monitor is the lizard I want most (never seen any for sale where I am though) I like all monitors, but the big ones I am a bit too wary of the damage they could do to me. On a slightly related note I often dreamt (literally, not in terms of desire) that I had a pet komodo dragon growing up, not sure why as I was never really into reptiles as a child and probably only saw them a couple of time on tv... go figure.

    Thank you so much for making this amazing video. Our local reptile store sells ackie monitors. I am saving up to buy one this upcoming summer of 2023. The local reptile store owner knows breeders who have little ackies every summer. I can't wait!!!
    Komodo dragons have always been one of my favorite animals. I work at a local petland in thier fish/reptile department. My name tag is Komodo Dragon Kayla. 🐉(since you pick out an animal that starts with the first letter of your name!) lol 😆 so an ackie is basically the closest thing I'll have to one of my favorite animals of all time... the komodo dragon!
    PS: after watching videos on the komodo dragon we went to the zoo next day just so I could see them in person! Lol
    Anyways sorry for the long comment. I just love anything to do with monitor lizards. Haha Thanks again for the awesome videos as always and stay rad!!! 👌✌️

  • @mattm7798
    @mattm7798 Год назад +2

    To note, an ackie will need a large enclosure...prepare to spend between $500-$1500 on the enclosure. The ackie itself will likely cost less than the enclosure. Luckily, they seem to breed well so there is rarely a time where you can't find one from a good breeder.
    The only "knock" on ackies are they do need a fairly large enclosure for their size. Other than that, they may simply be the best pet lizard period all things considered.
    I love you Clint but the cage you have linked in the description is NOT big enough for an adult. Min size for 1 adult is 4x2x2 feet(120 gallons), but bigger is always better with monitors.

    • @rhysme423
      @rhysme423 Год назад +1

      Is 120 gallons (4x2x2) a comfortable size it will enjoy? There is a place I have so it can run around without restrictions so will it do well in the grand scheme of things?

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 Год назад

      @@rhysme423 "Comfortable"...debatable. If you have 3 sided ledge to extend the surface area that will help alot. These guys are ACTIVE. My 8 month old uses every square inch of his 6x3x3 with background ledges.
      That's not to say 6x3x3 is the minimum. Ackies will make you think any size enclosure is too small because of how active they are. If the most you can afford is a 4x2x2 which beyond that is where the price really starts to take off dramatically, a single ackie can do pretty well in one but it's not optimal. The trick will be having enough burrowing substrate(which stays damp at the bottom), and a good thermal gradient.
      I want to encourage more people to keep ackies as I think they are among the best pet lizards but they do need more space than their size would suggest.
      If you can wait another few months and save up for at least a 4x2x3 or 5x3x3, I would. Ackies aren't going anywhere. They are very popular and available all the time.
      One further piece of advice is if handling is part of why you want an ackie, ask the seller specifically what the temperment is. Even skittish ackies can be worked with but it is 10x easier to start with a bold and or calm ackie than have to work with them for 6 months to get them to not run at the sight of you. Also if you see an ackie being sold for really cheap, there is a reason why...be cautious.

    • @rhysme423
      @rhysme423 Год назад

      @@mattm7798 hmmm ok! I’m deciding whether to wait and save for the very expensive ackie (with enclosure that is) and a Pygmy mulga… I have found good space for mulga’s in terrariums for sale. But as an adult I’m going to keep both of them anyway.
      Edit: I have decided on an ackie, they are more recommended and far more common, the tank I’m looking at is a 5x3x3 for 1600 or so dollars (I’m in Australia that makes things different) and though it will take me a long long time I hope my parents can help me get the enclosure

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 Год назад

      @@rhysme423 Ah, you're in Australia, that changes things a bit. Not sure what enclosure options are available down under. Yeah, if this is your first monitor, the gilleni can be tempting because some of them can be bold but ive never heard them described as calm. And most of the other odatria don't share the ackie temperment(which really sucks because they are a great size for pets).
      There is another dwarf monitor we don't have in the US because Australia has way too strict export laws: v. hamersleyensis . I don't know much about them but heard they have better temperaments than other dwarfs not including ackies. It is native to Australia so check it out.
      So a tip with your parents helping: Make a deal with them. Get good grades or earn something for them to help you. It shows them you're serious and if they at least tolerate reprtiles, all the more reaosn when you do get the monitor, you confirm with the seller it's calm and tame. Again, Ackies are very common(at least in the states) so don't settle. They are so interactive, it's like have a cat with scales(maybe a bit of an exaggeration but close)

    Hi Clint! Awesome videos, I subscribed! I have a question though…do Ackies require high humidity to survive? My Savannah Monitor died a few years ago because he was housed improperly in a glass aquarium and as a result of prolonged low humidity, he developed gout and I had to put him down. I actually build a custom 8x4x4 enclosure but after a year of being in glass aquariums, irreversible damage was done :( just wondering if the same holds true for these guys. Thanks!

    Getting any monitor lizard should come with this question: would I be a good owner for a bird of prey? Because that is the equivalent to a monitor lizard. Could the average household give proper care to the pigeon-sized American Kestrel? Probably, if you took the time to do your homework and be completely set up beforehand, because that’s the bird I’d compare an ackie to. As you start getting into the bigger monitors it becomes comparable to getting a peregrine falcon/red-tail hawk/golden eagle/Andean condor…none of which are appropriate for somebody who has limited-to-no experience with a big, active predator that can really hurt you if it became so inclined to.
