My grandfather was very open about his 27 years of service in his beloved Corps not because he was proud of being a 3 war combat vet but to try and make sure I didn’t become 1. He was 17 at Guadalcanal 18 on Gloucester and 19 on Peleliu 20 on Okinawa. He stated to me crossing that airfield was the most helpless he ever felt due to there being absolutely 0 cover. similar to Eugene’s company K 3/5 who took 64% casualties my grandfathers took 67% throughout the battle of Pelelui which at this point in the show has only just begun.

Messed up part about the water situation was that the oil barrels that Eugene and the new guys were scrubbing in the last episode were reused to transport the water for the marines during the assault. The water was all contaminated no amount of washing and scrubbing is going to make water drinkable after its been used to carry oil. That's why they had no water.

I think the majority of veterans appreciate it when civilians watch these types of war shows. People need to understand. If people understand, we can have sober and rational discussions about war and, and about when and if we should go to war.

16:26 According to the book this was taken from, the first thing they tried was sticking him with morphine. They don’t know if the needle broke off or if he had too much adrenaline to be calmed, but they had to quiet him. The intent behind the shovel was to hit him with the flat, but it was dark and chaotic, so they accidentally ended up hitting him with the edge.

As a veteran of 40 years, I take no offense to your reaction videos on wartime shows. In fact, I feel you do us a big favor by calling attention to the horror and ugliness of wartime. You do great job in your appreciation of the surrounding aspects of wartime that many never even give a second thought to. Your empathy and appreciation of the sacrifices many made is appreciated by this serviceman of 5 Peacekeeping missions (Cyprus, Egypt, Sinai/Gaza, Bosnia and Afghanistan).

It was bad enough that there were little to no natural fresh water sources on Peleliu and heat that regularly soared over 100 degrees F. What made it worse was that Marines’ water supplies that they arrived with were contaminated because some dimwit (or group of dimwits) decided that the best way to transport the drinkable water was in empty 55 gallon oil/gasoline drums. The drums were not cleaned out before this, so any water that was put in them was instantly rendered undrinkable because of rust and petroleum contamination. The water was instantly vomited up by anyone that did drink it. It got so bad that when some of the ships offshore learned of the problem they, on their own initiative, began sending cases of fruit and tomato juice to the front lines. That solved the problem, short term. And needless to say, the idiotic mistake of putting drinking water in contaminated fuel drums was never repeated.
There’s a documentary out there called “Peleliu 1944, Horror in the Pacific” that goes into why the Battle of Peleliu was so difficult, including the water and temperature issues. It’s worth watching, but not until after you’ve finished this series.

I started smoking when I was in because it kept me from being homesick. The smell reminded me of my dad from my childhood. Later on it helped (at least in my mind) relieve stress. It's kind of the one little thing you find a little joy out of being in that environment. Similar to a hot cup of coffee. I recently quit after 6 years of smoking. HE also stands for high explosive, not heavy explosive. FO in this context means a forward observer. Usually used to call for fire or to mark target coordinates for fire in the future.

5:23 If you remember in episode 8 of Band of Brothers when Lipton started smoking, and Winters said, “I didn’t figure you for a smoking man?!” and Lipton replied, “Me neither.” Smoking is supposed to relax you, so I think there’s a fatalistic view about serving in the military that when it’s possible that you can die at any minute, what’s the point of worrying about lung cancer in 20 years?!

I was always reminded of the hard to pronounce Pacific battle locations while visiting Camp Pendleton Marine base in California. Many of their streets are named in honor of Marine war heroes and battles. When they did get water many of the Marines got sick from it. They used empty fuel oil drums to transport the water to the Island but, in their haste, didn't flush them out good enough and the water was contaminated.

Smoking helps ease their mental trauma, and also gives them something to always do. Inhale, exhale, watch the smoke drift away.. Many veterans turn to some form of addiction, weather it be drinking, smoking, drugs ect due to their time.
Cigarette's also give them an energy boost and a boost to alertness due to the nicotine and other properties in the cigarettes. it helps keep them on their toes with no water, food and running on days of no sleep.

You might enjoy the movie called Midway. It's a war movie about the battle of Midway Island during WWII. No where near as brutal as this one. It's more of a Naval Battle with strategy. It's also factual. There are two versions of this movie. One dine in the 1970s, and another done in the 20teens. I'd recommend the most recent version in the 20teend. Thanks!

Yes, the English language is difficult with so many terms and slangs etc. However, knowing multiple languages is a challenge too because you may say something in one language but speak another to someone else without even realizing. For me it’s Spanish, English, Japanese, learning Tagalog.
    16:23
In war, it’s either one person has to go or everyone in the unit/squadron/company and many more go. When people go crazy like this, it’s a hard choice to make but if they won’t stay quiet and they compromise the position for everyone, it has to be done. Now do I agree with it, no but I understand because it’s either the enemy goes home and me 6 ft. under or they do. It’s a very complicated and hard situation to deal with.
    16:40
Why give someone morphine when that could be given to someone else who is wounded. Remember supplies are limited and can’t be spread around like candy. Knocking him out unconscious probably would work.
    18:23
That is probably the best way to explain a location calling it “Hell on earth” which is not far from the truth I believe.
Yes, digesting these types of series is hard to take it and it’s not always easy. You’re giving your own opinions on anything and we or at least I respect your opinions. It won’t stop me from watching all your reactions. Nothing you share is negative so don’t worry. You show heart and compassion for what’s going on and that’s very respectful.

Other types of artillery ammunition are HEI = High Explosive Incendiary, AP = Armor Piercing, and APFSDS = Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot. There are also artillery shells for illumination at night (flares), for making smoke, for starting fires (Napalm), and there used to be artillery ammunition filled with poison gas chemicals.

As it happens they actually do "need to aim" but not precisely. I'm not military but I've looked at some infantry field manuals and the mechanics of firing on a field get pretty involved. They go into a lot of detail on angles and regions and ways to spread fire. It's true you'd end up killing people no matter what you did, but militaries have done all sorts of work figuring out the best ways to spread fire to kill as many people as possible.

The fighting was brutal in the Pacific, Japanese followed the bushido code. Bushido regarded surrender as cowardly. Each soldier was indoctrinated to accept that it was the greatest honor to die for the Emperor and it was cowardly to surrender to the enemy.
Those who had surrendered to the Japanese, regardless of how courageously or honorably they had fought, merited nothing but contempt. Horrendous acts were excused since they involved the killing of men who had forfeited all rights to be treated with dignity or respect.

The whole Palau campaign should have been bypassed. Admiral Halsey knew Japanese air power had been decimated and posed little or no threat to the upcoming campaign in the Philippines. Gen. MacArthur convinced the Joint Chiefs of military and Pacific Navy Command that he needed Peleliu taken before he could land in the Philippines. The Battle for Peleliu began September 15 and Peleliu was secured Nov. 27. MacArthur landed in the Philippines on Oct. 20, a full 6 weeks before Peleliu was secured. Peleliu cost the lives of over 1800 Marines and 8500 wounded plus the lives of 12,000 Japanese. All for nothing.

This series is very, very dark. It's no accident it didn't do as well financially as BoB. The fighting is brutal, the landscape is hostile, the weather is miserable. It IS hard to watch because there is no romance to it. It's the flip side of Bob: dehumanized and savage. Even the interactions between the Marines is harsh. But I really believe it's a more honest portrayal of that time and place than the entertainment industry had ever attempted before.

The scale of murder that is war is hard to comprehend, in 3 years of conflict across 6,000 miles of the pacific the americans lost 111,000 men killed, sounds a lot, but compare it to other conflicts ... first day of the somme during world war 1, 60,000 british casualties, in the air over europe during 5 years of fighting 250,000 dead, Verdun during world war 1 over a six month period almost one million men killed, stalingrad over a period of just a few months 1.5 million dead ... but these loses are nothing compared to the Mongolian expansion in the 13th century where it is estimated that over a 60 year period 30% of the worlds population were killed .... we are a brutal species and we need politics to make sure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past, but all to often as seen in gaza right now, politics fail us and we return to being brutal tribal animals
