    I'm unemployable so I don't count for the busy lifestyle person but....
    You covered most of the short term tips.
    I think batch cooking is the biggest time saver.
    I can make a big pot of stew, have one bowl full for supper and put the rest in bottles for future convenience meals. That can be done with most foods. Making a large batch doesn't take much longer, if any, than making a one meal batch.
    for couples, remember, working for a living is expensive!!!! IMO If one of the couple can stay out of the work force and be a homemaker, the money saved can be as much as the money gained from the second income.

    Meal planning is the #1 things that helps me to stay within my budget and prepare good, healthy meals. Some times I hate doing it but it’s always worth it.

    I LOVE that you added at the end that we shouldn't feel guilty for buying 'cheater' ingredients and that no one is going to kick us out of the homesteading club. Haha, So true! And a message I need to be reminded of every so often! ♥
    I like to prep at least bread at the end of every day to soak/rise overnight. I

    I use recipes I know and love and I make my own mixes. I have a roll mix in jars I can just dump in a bread machine, with the warm water, yeast and butter. Then hit the dough button and back to whatever I need to get done. I also have pancake mixes for a super quick last minute meal and some fun brownie mixes and such. This helps so much.

    One of my favorite tips and ultimately favorite dishes....is “No Waste Layered Soup.” Whenever you have anything leftover, start a quart jar and add it....then freeze. Do this with every veggie, meat, starch, broth or gravy: corn, peas, chicken grease/broth after baking, etc., freezing each and every time. Once that jar is full, start another. The look is like layered “sand art!” When you have two or three full, frozen jars, thaw and begin your No Waste Layered Soup. You can then add whatever you have in your fridge/garden: celery, carrots, potatoes, onions. I always, always add canned tomatoes. Season with salt, pepper, etc. For a real kick, add a couple splashes of barbecue sauce. You can also add water to that almost empty ketchup bottle and toss that in. My mom, born in 1917, taught me this....and she made the best soup ever.....and I like to think I’ve followed the trend! 🍲

      I do something similar using freezer bags and make specific kinds of soup in different bags for example i save leftover taco meat and corn for taco soup. Leftover potatoes are saved for potato soup. Then when the bags are mostly full i throw in in other ingredients like canned tomatoes or leftover salsa and a can of beans.
      I have a beef stew i started this week with part of a roast and baked potatoes that ended up way too tough when i cooked it because it was a busy day and i didn`t get it started early enough.

      Sounds like it would taste similar to what my grandma calls ‘refrigerator soup’. As if refrigerator soup ever tastes the same twice. 😉

      I save all meat cooking liquids in the freezer in jars. When I have a couple quarts I make a giant pot of gravy then freeze it in small serving. My husband likes gravy and I don't want to cook it every time.

    I actually cooked a decent meal tonight. My RA has been so painful recently, I have not felt like cooking much. I try to have a plan,but often find myself doing quick and easy rather than a big meal. We are in our 70s, eat less and that makes cooking a lot different than cooking for seven.
    Jill, I really enjoyed your cooking videos so much. And I learned some new things too.

    Thanks for more great ideas! I also struggle with some crazy chronic pain which forces me to plan ahead or eat too much frozen pizza. My favorite meal prep tips? I plan a week, but not necessarily by day. Five meals with at least one massive leftover possibility and one easy, 15 minutes or less, no stand prep. Also, in summer I "free range" my kiddos for breakfast in the garden. Armed with their spray bottles they gather whatever suits their fancy. Raspberries, carrots, and greens are a common breakfast with a cheese or yogurt snack to balance things a bit. 😉They LOVE scavenging for their favorites, and as a bonus, a bit less for me to can up.

    Love this so much! I realized one day when I'd planned hamburgers, that I never bought buns. But I love to bake bread, so I went looking for a quick bun recipe online. Took me 30 minutes start to finish to make them, and it would have taken AT LEAST that amount of time to go buy them (not to mention, the ingredient list is vastly different)! Just another instance of Homemade for the Win!

    Yes, all these! I also set aside at least one day, once a week or every two weeks to be a "big bake day". And I bake what we will be using and freeze some extras, but that way I have a chance to focus on getting done food that takes a little longer to do.

    Love your style! I function the same way... most days. Nothing worse than realizing it’s 5pm and I haven’t planned for dinner. Sourdough pancakes or pizza crust is a life saver!

    It helps me when I prep meat as I go. Like ground beef-add beans and taco seasoning as it cooks freeze it or can it so you already are a step ahead. You can do this with chicken or pork as well.
    I am a moody cook so instead of making a food meal plan like most do, I write on my blackboard things I know that are on hand and easy that I’ve prepped for. I set an alarm on my phone so when it goes off I check the board, decide from my options, and cook that.

    My Mom ( I was adopted by my grandparents) told me stories of how her mother and grandmother would take one entire day and devote to baking, another to laundry, etc. So I adopted part of that. I devote one of my days off to baking . I absolutely love this!

    I freeze halved jalapenos with seeds removed. Then can add to salsas,beans etc.
    Where I open tomato sauce and can use all I freeze in a baggy and break off what I need.

    Good tips! One of my fave prep things to do is to get a huge bag of onions, peel and chop them, and put them in snack bags that hold one cup each and freeze them. Then, when it's time to cook, I just get them out and put them right in the pan, still frozen, and move onward. Another idea I like to do is, when I need shredded chicken, I bake some boneless, skinless chicken breasts, then throw them right in my Kitchenaid mixer with the mixing paddle on it and turn it on slow. Shredded chicken in a minute!!

    Planning ahead but remaining flexible! And I I don’t beat myself up for “cheater” ingredients ... with 8 kids in our family, (and almost three of them teens) I can’t just “whip up” a batch of tortillas or chips from scratch- I would literally just cook from sun up til sun down. So I major on the majors and try to buy quality for what I don’t make. Love your cookbook! The sourdough brownies were a big hit with my crew.

    I agree about the plan. It just is so difficult to come up with a dinner idea when you are tired. I check the weather and our calendar and plan a weeks meals. It doesn't mean I'm locked in. I can adjust as needed.

    I am fortunate to work from home so I break down the meal components and make different parts before work, at lunch and after work. I am a very beginner homesteader so I don't have animals or anything yet. I am starting my first garden as we speak and can't wait to start cooking with food I have grown myself.

    Cooking extra meats, pre prepping veggies needed I can easily grab, and making double of thinfs lije waffles or pancakes when possible helps a lot.

    I am the EXACT same way. I plan my menu one week at a time. I can tell you on Monday what we're eating on Friday. Not only does this alleviate stress, but it SAVES MONEY. I find it difficult to cook for 2 people - I have stuff left over. So I might use some cheese in a recipe on Monday and then use the rest in a recipe on Saturday. By writing my menu down (old school!), I can look and see that I need to take something out of the freezer days ahead. I work at home, so like you, I might prepare something in the morning that we will need for dinner. I also cook extra so we have leftovers for lunch. But I do get to a point when I say, "If I eat another leftover, I am going to scream." Then we head to the local diner for lunch. :-)

    I really enjoyed this video! I like to cook from scratch as often as I can. I usually make our go-to meals during the week and I’ll try out new recipes on the weekends when I have more time to experiment. I also make bread and I like to do bigger batches of meals on the weekends, so we have leftovers for the weeks when we are busier. I work outside the home, but my fiancé works from home so he usually has the leftovers for lunch and I bring easy lunches like fruit, yogurt, sandwiches, etc.

    I love the cookbook. Having a plan and a few quick go to meals always takes the frustration of getting a meal on the table when you are running late. In my case because I was busy playing in the dirt lol.

    I used to be a past master and cooking everything for an hour. My favorite was poaching a whole chicken. Big old pot of boiling water (and any stray veg you want to throw in for flavor). Lower the chicken in and bring it back up to the boil. Then put the lid on and turn off the fire. For me it was right after work and I took off for my walk. Perfectly cooked chicken. Pulled the meat off the bone and put everything I wasn't going to eat/use back in the pot and cooked it the remainder of the evening....nice broth, that and all sorts of chicken meat for the week. I'm a lover of leftovers too and can eat the same thing for every meal until it's gone! lol, not everyone can get away with that.

    With only 2 of us here, When I make a recipe, we do always have leftovers ! Love making and freezing meals for lunch or a busy day in the garden ! Canning soups, beans, tomatoes and pasta sauce, meats, veggies and fruits is an addiction for me. Love going shopping in my pantry ! Have a Fun Day, Jill !

    I need to get back to planning! I end up defrosting ground beef in a frying pan with a lid to make quick ground beef or through a whole frozen chicken in the instant pot for 35-45 minutes to shred it and make something quick. Or this time of year egg something.. quiche, frittata, or just fried for breakfast dinner.

      Sorry-- I misspoke in the video! You should not can in an Instant Pot-- they are not rated for that-- you should use a regular pressure canning for canning. My apologies! I didn't catch my mistake until after the video was up!

    We do a lot of similar things in our kitchen as well. My biggest move is definitely making a ton of stew or chili or something like that in our crockpot. Then sticking a bunch in tupperwares and popping them in the freezer once every few weeks.
    I won't lie, there are days when me and my fella both come home from work exhausted and all we want to do is sit on the couch and do nothing. On those nights its such a life savor to just pop something complete and wholesome from the freezer into a pot to heat on the stove and leaving it alone until it smells nice haha.
    The other big one in our kitchen is if we know we won't have a lot of time after work we'll just make sure to have chicken breast defrosted by the time we get home. That way we just have to pop it in the oven in a dish with some salt, pepper, & butter (although i've been adding duck grease I saved from a duck I roasted instead of butter lately and wow is it good! haha). Then all we need to do is throw some veggies in a pan for a few minutes or wash some greens for a salad. Quick, easy, homecooked.

    Hello, this is a great. I have been trying to do things more home made because of health issues and just confirming to do things ahead or make it and freeze is so helpful. You said something about the instant pot that i have a question. Now I have asked a few other people about canning in the instant pot and they said no it does not work as well. But you said that you canned in the instant pot. Does it work the same way as having a pressure caner? My kids wanted to get me a instant pot to can in because it was less than a pressure caner and I told them not to. I just want to make sure that the instant pot will do the same thing as a pressure caner. Thank you for sharing, God bless, Stay safe and have a wonderful day.

    I've been resisting the instapot fad so far, but this almost convinces me. lol. I'm not a big appliance gadget type person, preferring to do it the "old way", but this does look time saving!

    My wife and have been married 43 years. Growing up, my wife did the meal planning thing, usually a week at a time. We've continued that our whole married life. Usually, there's a little flexibility to switch meals or pull something else out.

    Bulk purchases are great if you do not have the space to raise your own. We bulk purchase as we are still carving our space in the high desert to grow foods. We do have goats but have not bred yet so milk, butter and cheeses still come from the store. Hoping to earn enough to get her bred soon! We mostly eat at home along with using some very old cookbooks from the family. Breaks up the usual from our supplies.

    We have lunches on rotate also. Both are vegetarian so only dinner needs meat.
    We have lots of oats or grits, both savory versions, not sweet. I try not to have sweet breakfasts. This is huge. And often we do greens at breakfast, so theres an extra veg svg for the day. My kids are hungriest at breakfast so greens go down easier lol They do like them a little tho. Rotate your greens too.
    We eat grits or oats prob 5 days a week, smoothies 1x and straight eggs 1x. Eggs in all porridges. Lots of eggs, theyre almost custardy lol

    Before Covid, we had weekly pizza lunches with a friend. The “get togethers” are via the phone now & I “make” homemade pizza every week. I make up a large batch of pizza sauce & freeze it in half pint jars. I also make up a batch of pizza dough that I quarter & saran wrap individually & freeze in a ziplock. I also batch out & freeze sliced mozzarella. 4 weeks worth of pizza that can be batch defrosted each week, the day before. I roll put the dough a half hour before lunch & “bake” it on the stovetop....it’s very hot in NJ as I write this; I ain’t turning on the stove til September lol

    I’ve heard you mention a couple time about making homemade cream of chicken or mushroom soup to add to recipes, do you have a recipe for it? And can it be canned so I can make a lot ahead of time?

      It's easy. Stir 1/4 cup starch or flour in a pan with a few cups of chicken broth. Stir till it thickens and boils like gravy.
      Never actually made mushroom soup but I think it's the same with a couple handfuls chopped mushrooms thrown in.

    I'm interested in your book, however we are a gluten free family (not by choice). Do you have a fair bit of gluten free recipes?

      God made gluten. It's a good thing. Some modern wheat varieties are hybrids and provide more gluten than God intended. You could try some natural Italian wheat.
      Secondly, many people think they are gluten intolerant and it's just the phytic acid from not fermenting the wheat.
      Thirdly, and in our case, when we thought our child was gluten intolerant, we found it was just the glyphosphate. We started using organic wheat from Amazon and her encopresis went away immediately.
      God gives us bread to sustain us. Gluten is not bad... But the love of money has caused growers to produce hyvrid wheat that lasts longer and is easier to produce, at the risk of our health.

    I do love using my crock pot to get a great homemade meal done by dinner time when life tends to get in my way ... I am thinking a lot about possibly getting an instapot, too!!       Michele Meacham I have had my Instant Pot for a few years & use it very often. I have never regretted the purchase. The price keeps going down, so invest in the biggest one with the most options that you can afford. Amazon has great prices on them, but make sure you do price comparisons. Amazon doesn’t always have the best prices.

    I completely APPLAUD your organizational skills!! If there were more people who could organize this way, there would be far less hunger because the very skills you discuss here are skills that could make SNAP benefits last not only the entire month, but into the next month and see food accumulation.     Wait, what! Pressure canning in the instant pot?!!! I need to know how to do this with chicken stock, etc..... details? links?

      Sorry-- I misspoke in the video! You should not can in an Instant Pot-- they are not rated for that-- you should use a regular pressure canning for canning. My apologies! I didn't catch my mistake until after the video was up!

      No problem.....But, there is a new Instapot MAX that allows it,,,supposedly, so I am going to check that out. It would be wonderful to have a one function piece of equipment, especially because my Tiny house is almost complete and I will need to save space.

    I love your videos! And I love the homesteading lifestyle. What flour did you use in your buns? They look white. Also, did you do anything differently when using Sourdough? Do you ever use Einkorn wheat flour?

      These are made with unbleached AP flour. I do use Einkorn as well-- I talk about that a bunch in my cooking course. :)

    If you are just going to cook it in the slow cooker, you don't need to sear that roast. Less work. Less clean up.

      It turns out more tender if it's seared first.

      @@xanadunadine1970 Naw...If you cook it in low wet heat for a long period of time, it will be fork tender in any event. You only need to sear meat that gets cooked fast.

    I have a lot of things home canned and dehydrated for meals. For example if I want to make chili, I have the chili beans, tomato sauce, salsa, and the ground beef all canned in jars. So all I have to do is open them, pour in a pan and heat up. Same for if I make beef stew everything is jars. Also do dehydrated meals in a jar. Add water and if you want meat in it, there again open a jar.

    When my late husband's Mom and Dad would have us over for dinner, they had a system of filling up the sink or a large pot in the sink of soapy water, (silverware always in the soapy water in a measuring cup), while cooking and the kids were expected to bring their finished plates to the kitchen counter. The Mom and Dad worked like a team cooking and loading the dishwasher and it cut down on time of clean up.

    I cook most of my meals--because I know what is in my food! I do cheat and use Jar Salsa or gravy envelopes. I work 10 hours a day. I appreciate she does that and is a full-time home Mom.

    Oh, please please please PLEASE stop using the instant pot for canning! Please!!! It is NOT recommended to use for canning. It is an electric pressure COOKER and in testing by the NCHFP, they noted that it doesn't hold the temperature constant for the proper amount of time needed to kill botulism spores which may be lurking in your jars. Please use a stovetop canner for your canning, don't cut corners with canning. It's not worth you or your children potentially getting sick from it!

      @@theprairiehomestead That's good. I panicked when I heard canning. It's not safe to can in these yet so many people do and don't understand their food may end up unsafe to eat if it didn't hold temperature long enough to kill any botulism spores that may be in the jars. :)
