It's possible without the internet non of this would be remembered anymore. All the VHS machines are broken, the cd players are broken, damn, even iPods are no more. magnificent guitarist, the one and only Andy Summers..the one and only of the kind...and he is superbly excellent, in recording studio and onstage... not a 'conventional' musician, it's a dream for a band to have him/guitarist like him
I saw them in 1984 in Atlantic City, and then again 2007 at the same venue! Andy Summers is so under rated it makes me sick! The most talented trio period!
I wouldn't say "underrated". I mean, he's the guitar player in the most successful three-piece in history. Kinda hard to be underrated. Underpaid, definitely (Sting got all the royalties when P. Diddy copped the Every Breath You Take riff).
@@showbox2084 two brilliant albums. Amongst musicians he is not underrated by any means but he never really got his due for the riffs he came up with the Police in my opinion. Win the day
Unusual to just see Andy but I like it. And he’s playing his famous Telecaster. I like all the intricate textures he plays! He does arpeggios and rhythmic notes and all kind of effects. And for him it looks easy. And Stew is playing well behind him! 😎👏🏻🎸
Little? :-) The thinng is that he has his very personal way of filling up the space without the proverbial (and tired) scale run. Just think that aside from some pedal note played by an invisible player, the rest of the comp is just Andy.
@@Keepgoing42 Sorry for the year long delayed reply. I was busy dancing to Klark Kent B-sides. So yeah, there's nothing wrong with Sting on the pedal. It was good here. Obnoxious though during the Newcastle 1982 concert.
Actually Andy started off playing jazz in his teens, then went into rock during the 60's as well as studying classical guitar for 3 years. It was his combination of all these genres that made the Police sound. He took Sting's songs and added his unique style of guitar playing and the rest is history
Stewart looked like such a natural athlete, just look at his build, his stamina on stage was incredible. I reckon he would have been great at sports had he not picked up the drums
Summers and Johnny Marr were guitarists who created a sonic tapestry under the lead vocal. Two of my all time faves. But listen to Steve Cropper's guitar for "Dock of the Bay" (which he co-write with Otis). You'll see who the father of them all is.
@@willinguyen1 That's the funniest scene of "It May Get Loud", where Edge shows how little he's actually playing on "Elevation" (I think it is). But that's a talent, too.
George Harrison was also in this line of players. The song is first and do what the song need. Their parts end up being an integral part of the song, not merely comping.
I'm currently learning this song on guitar and there's no better lesson than this video. I've been pausing, going back and forth looking at Andy's chords and fingers. Simply the best. Ps: Copeland a beast as usual.
This is a neat song. I can't say Andy Summers is THE greatest guitarist, but... What I consider the mark of a great guitar player is how they can bond what they compose into a song to make it unique to that song, and no other. When you hear the first few bars, you know immediately what song it is. He does a great job. Songs like "Mississippi Queen," "Gimmie Three Steps," "Layla," and others have the same trait. That's why Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani, and Wylde never have huge hits. They don't bond.
Hey idiot, Sting's insistence of a melodic pop sound to sell the band worldwide makes Sting the genius of them all, and without him, Andy and Stewart would be another two unheard of musicians in a basket with hundreds of other extremely talented drummers and guitarists who are not recognized in the mainstream.

Andy Summers, Robert Fripp and Greg Lake were childhood guitar mates, they went to the same guitar teacher. You can see that by the way they play;different music styles and applications, but they 3 keep the hands on and pluck the guitar in the same way
I'm a guitarist and absolutely agree Andy is essential and underappreciated to the sound, but that said: IMHO its Stewart's drums that really define the Police sound. If you listen to Andy with other drummers, he morphs a bit and it loses its original Police sound, whereas Stewart always has that distinctive tone.
Awesome. Andy's original sound and technique is legendary. Stewart, sporting the jazz-grip for snare. He always does this, but you never see "rock drummers" do this...ever. Obviously shows a sign of a percussionist and not just a time-keeper.

Absolutely agree, Carl . . . Andy is the very definition of the post-punk textural guitarist- . Perfect, smart, intelligent, and minimalist.
A Sting once said Andy knew expensive chords.

Just ask yourself how many memorable guitar riffs Dominic Miller has come up with in his 30 year career with Sting. I can't think of a single one.

Stewart Copeland was also a key component in the band's sound. The Police were a tight trio of great musicians. They ALL were creators of their sound.
He's definitely not underrated. He is hugely influential.

All three are great musicians, and each had good solo career. But it's within this trio that they are best defined.
