My buddy bought 3 dozen refurbished Pro Vs mint condition. We went out to our club at 7:30 in the evening found a hole with no one around and started hitting these down a wide fairway. The results would've made Phil Niekro and Hoyt Wilhelm jealous!!
If they were 5A mint from Lost Golf Balls then they weren't refurbished. They were just cleaned. The refurbished balls have a stamp on them and they are a different category.
Yeah, I've bought them, who hasn't. I didn't really notice that much difference with the refinished Pro V1's I used, but I've learned not to doubt MGS. Love the video series and keep up the great work you do for all of us golf nuts out here !
I used the My golf Spy ball comparrison app and played the Snell MTB black but the price with shipping and tax was a little high although they played well for me. After watching your video a few weeks back about swing speeds and the best ball for slower speeds of which I am the senior poster boy I play the Vice Pro Plus and am happy with the cost and performance. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting for us.
I bought refurbished ProV1's about 2 years ago and I could definitely tell a difference as stated in this video. Thanks for this video MGS as I will never buy refurbished golf balls again.
Thank you for confirming suspicions. Yes, I've bought one of the boxes shown at the beginning. They are tempting due to the low price and 'new' look vs. 'used' balls that come marked/scratched and probably cost more. Good to put them out of your mind right from the start so you don't get sucked in.
I've bought 100 refurbed Pro V1's and still using them. I don't have an official handicap and I don't play tournaments, but my stats on Shot Scope seem to suggest I'm about 12-15 hcp. If someone is a brand new golfer and they are looking to get sensible cost golf balls that they have no fear of losing, I would suggest buying these balls. Once they are better and/or have money to spend, by all means go buy the full price stuff if you want. I'll be excited to see how much better you score... Ultimately it all boils down to skill and pro's will still break par with these balls. I'm not claiming they are brilliant and perfect balls or that everyone should be using them, but I'm also not going to blame them when I hit a poor shot. In fact I love it when I see the reactions of some of my playing partners when they see how badly scuffed/beaten my golf ball is and I can still make pars and the odd birdie here or there.
Never bought refurbished golf balls, and they end up in the shag bag for chipping practice in the back yard. Refurbished Golf clubs are a different story, gamed a Callaway refurb for 3 years. Love ya'lls golf content.

I'm glad you recommended the LGB 5A mint balls. I've bought from them numerous times. The 4A balls can be marked, but I've never had a scuffed one. Last year I bought 11 dozen Srixon Z-Star balls from WalMart for $24.95/dzn. They were previous year's balls but brand new. I've seen Bridgestone Tour B balls at WalMart for $34.95/dzn as well.
I would love to see a side by side comparisons between new Pro V's, Kirklands random "FOUND" balls. Most of us who love your channel, are very average golfers and we all have balls in our bag that we have found in the woods during rounds and we all have balls plucked from lakes or bought from the big tubs at used sporting goods stores. I would love to know how much performance we sacrifice by going cheap and how much the elements actually affect the balls.
I have not - but have bought some Titleists and Srixona from Lost Golf Balls. Have found a few “refinished/refurbished” balls on the course. They wound up as shag bag balls for the backyard.

I have never bought refurbished golf balls until I found a new sealed box of pro v1 for $4.99 "3 dozen" that was last month, this week I found 2 dozen prov1x new in sealed package for $2.00. Never plan on using them but couldn't pass them up for the price. These both were at thrift stores in my area southern AZ. Enjoy the vids and info provided.
Just bought 2 dozen online. Crushed an 8 iron on line and it came up about 10 yards short. Now I know why. Thank you for the clarification. I can properly club myself until the reloads are. Never again. I will go back to my spend more on balls and I lose fewer thinking.
I don't lose balls often. As a result, I often end up playing the same ball for 36 or more holes. It really seems they lose performance at some point. Would be great to see you guys do a test as to how a ball deteriorates at different swing speeds. A standard round might be 14 Driver hits, 4 hybrid/fairway metal, 30 irons, 10 wedges... assuming putts aren't wearing the ball out... When should I chuck the ball into the shag bag? I've never bought a used ball... try everything but always seem to go back to ProV1x...

Good video, kinda obvious the refurbed would be compromised and lose distance. I just don’t understand the part about club head speed. How fast I’m striking the ball shouldn’t be changed by the ball itself. It would be nice to see how much the direction is affected also, because the slower swing golfers might not be put off over 3 yards, but hitting a good shot, but not knowing it because of a bad ball would really frustrate the beginner golfer.
I buy pro v! All the time (refurbished), simply because I cant afford new balls, I’m 77 and play bogey golf and I definitely prefer pro V1 over “softer balls” for seniors
Curious, have you tried the Srixons? Around my area, they are always on sale at up to 50% off at different times of the season. The Q Star Tour and Z Stars both work well for me and better than Reloads.
I've never bought them, but I've found out been given plenty. A lot of the refurbished balls pulled out of the water have peeling paint. Those always go straight to the extras bin that I give away to whoever wants them.
heck, i can see a difference in Pro VI after just 18 holes of play. They're great balls, but like all the urethane balls, they will absorb some damage. If you don't have time to practice getting that check-spin action around the greens the high-end balls can give you, you may as well stick with a cheaper surlyn ball. I don't know what the cover is on the Titleist Velocity or the Titleist Tru-feel, but those balls are tough and they'll last longer than you can keep them in play.

Some of the local courses I frequent with my buddies are not in t he best condition though, and I have found some cheaper, but acceptable alternatives. New premium balls are best, that’s a given. But, this tells me that if you’re a machine, then there’s only a 1% - 3% difference between new and refurb. Since I’m not a machine and don’t have anything remotely resembling a consistent swing, then I probably won’t see the difference. That’s why I play balls that my friend picks up from his yard on a local club fairway! I used to only play new, premium balls, but I’m not good enough to see a difference anymore, so I play the cheapest ball I can stand, that I can afford to lose. What might be interesting would be to do a cost per yard comparison. I bet used/refurb/range balls would easily win.
Imagine waiting two or four weeks to play a round on a perfect day and using wack refurbished golf balls. Life is too short, y'all. Go play your best. Or play your personal best.

Never bought them but I'll use balls I found in the woods or water with great success! True story... got an ace with a slightly older ProV I found a few holes earlier still in my pocket. If it went 3 yards further then it may have been a nice birdie instead!

Yes, I've tried refurbished balls a couple of times. What I found -- not surprisingly - is that their quality is uneven. Some played like new and others probably sat at the bottom of a pond for a while.
Refurbished golf balls are very popular here in Spain. However, as always, it can be put down to a lack of information and knowledge. A lot of people need to know more about the DTC companies if a limited budget is a concern. Personally, I play Snell blacks and couldn't be happier.
For affordable golf balls I really like the Titleist velocity and the maxfli straightfli. For premium quality not price I really like the vice brand. But I feel the straightfli and velocity are best for more inconsistent ball strikers since they offer a very straight and forgiving trajectory.
would love to see a similar test run on used golf balls not refinished from places like lost golf balls and rock bottom to see if there is a performance loss and the actual cost rating similar to other ball tests. Also how do the Chromesoft and TP-5 practice balls sold new compare to the regular balls.
Thanks for the information it was very useful, but it would also have been helpful if you could have provided robot data on the balls flight, to show how much, if any, the surface imperfections or re-load golf balls impacted accuracy, consistency, height or spin. Also you cut some of the balls in half in the video, but did not explain exactly what you discovered about the balls core / interior by doing that?
Dangit. 3 doz this year, high swing speed all the time. Bought a new rangefinder to try to fix my variability on approaches. I haven't been confident all year long because of these and my cap went up considerably.
i've bought and used them a couple of times, main thing I notice is that they scuff much easier, especially in sand... that new paint just comes right off
Is there a difference between the refurbished (reload) and the 5A Mint Refinished? Found Balls were named as a culprit and I actually do buy from them (2022 Tour B XS - 5A Pristine). Maybe I should stop?
Bought a box of these to use with Trackman during the winter so I didn't wear out good TP5's. After a couple trips (maybe 400 or so strikes) several of these simply split in half. Not cracked or cut. Literally split in half.
I pick them out of the creek after they've been in there who knows how long and through how many winters. Losing a ton of yardage but hey, they're free! The fun starts when I find a new Pro V in the rough and pick up 30 yards. lol As far as buying NEW balls I tell my golfing buddies this: There are only TWO kinds of balls, balls that are lost and balls that are about to become lost. Think about it!
Never have. There are decent balls out there that don't cost that much. Callaway Super Soft is a good ball at a good price. Also, how fast does a strong player swing an 8 Iron??
If you shoot 90’s or higher like me due to being bad off the tee, use a cheaper ball off the tee and then switch to good quality balls on approach shots and around/on the green. You’ll save lots of money and save strokes closer to the green. Not many people shooting 90+ are playing competitively anyways.
Have you guys tested golf balls with personalized logos? Would the extra paint on one side cause unwanted side spin? I recall a test you did where the paint was slightly different on one side and it produced major side spin, would the personalization do the same? Should I avoid putting my dogs face on a bunch of Vice Pros? Do the Vice balls with the crazy paint drip affect flight?
I used to be a big fan of refurbished balls but after watching this unbiased video...I don't think so anymore. I'll just buy good old used balls instead.
Play em all the time and then switch to new for competitions. Been doing this for nearly 15yrs. My findings don't match these. Guess I've gotten luckier with quality. 275-285 off tee all day with either kind. Irons I do account and club down fractionally. I'll keep this up realizing there is a difference and keep enjoying the savings season over season.
Interesting but if I know I'm going to lose a few yards why not buy them and go up a club when playing a shot? Except for the driver, of course. What I would be very interested in is if you lose accuracy with the refurbished balls due to the refurbishment covering up or introducing imperfections. It's all very well losing 8 yards in distance but ending up 8 yards in the rough can be much more punishing.
In over 20 years of golfing I've never purchased refurbished golf balls. My Dad used to love them. I would rather buy a cheaper new ball like a Callaway Super Soft than a refurbished Titleist.
I think they are ok for a shag bag, but never ever would I play them. I bought a dozen Titleist reloads at Target and half of them had visible scuffs and one even had a cactus needle stuck in it.
I used refurbished pro v's... not much difference. I did notice the cover would get chewed up after a few wedge shots. Other than that, couldn't tell any difference in performance.
What was the effect on spin from the extra layer of paint on the refurbs? It sucks to lose yards but if you can’t hold a green (if you can hit one) then why buy the refurbs???
I buy them all the time. I have been golfing for just under a year and for me to spend $75 on a dozen balls is crazy. I would probably have to give up a few rounds a year to be able to buy Pro V1. Maybe when I get better icon afford to do this. Thanks for the tip.

You can buy Chrome Soft, TP5 and TP5X practice balls for $29.99 for reputable places. Brand new and USGA conforming. They just have a color blemish.

Maxfli tour CG are half price of ProV1 and they are awesome. Choose those over refurbished.

Yes, I've tried refurbished balls a couple of times. What I found -- not surprisingly - is that their quality is uneven. Some played like new and others probably sat at the bottom of a pond for a while.
Refurbished golf balls are very popular here in Spain. However, as always, it can be put down to a lack of information and knowledge. A lot of people need to know more about the DTC companies if a limited budget is a concern. Personally, I play Snell blacks and couldn't be happier.
For affordable golf balls I really like the Titleist velocity and the maxfli straightfli. For premium quality not price I really like the vice brand. But I feel the straightfli and velocity are best for more inconsistent ball strikers since they offer a very straight and forgiving trajectory.
would love to see a similar test run on used golf balls not refinished from places like lost golf balls and rock bottom to see if there is a performance loss and the actual cost rating similar to other ball tests. Also how do the Chromesoft and TP-5 practice balls sold new compare to the regular balls.

Thanks for the information it was very useful, but it would also have been helpful if you could have provided robot data on the balls flight, to show how much, if any, the surface imperfections or re-load golf balls impacted accuracy, consistency, height or spin. Also you cut some of the balls in half in the video, but did not explain exactly what you discovered about the balls core / interior by doing that?
Dangit. 3 doz this year, high swing speed all the time. Bought a new rangefinder to try to fix my variability on approaches. I haven't been confident all year long because of these and my cap went up considerably.
i've bought and used them a couple of times, main thing I notice is that they scuff much easier, especially in sand... that new paint just comes right off
I have used reload golf balls, noticed a slight difference in distance, but mostly in the feel.
Is there a difference between the refurbished (reload) and the 5A Mint Refinished? Found Balls were named as a culprit and I actually do buy from them (2022 Tour B XS - 5A Pristine). Maybe I should stop?
Bought a box of these to use with Trackman during the winter so I didn't wear out good TP5's. After a couple trips (maybe 400 or so strikes) several of these simply split in half. Not cracked or cut. Literally split in half.

I pick them out of the creek after they've been in there who knows how long and through how many winters. Losing a ton of yardage but hey, they're free! The fun starts when I find a new Pro V in the rough and pick up 30 yards. lol
As far as buying NEW balls I tell my golfing buddies this: There are only TWO kinds of balls, balls that are lost and balls that are about to become lost. Think about it!
What was the flight and offline vs the new balls? Refinishing changes the outer cover and should affect ball flight too, right?

If you shoot 90’s or higher like me due to being bad off the tee, use a cheaper ball off the tee and then switch to good quality balls on approach shots and around/on the green. You’ll save lots of money and save strokes closer to the green. Not many people shooting 90+ are playing competitively anyways.

Have you guys tested golf balls with personalized logos? Would the extra paint on one side cause unwanted side spin?
I recall a test you did where the paint was slightly different on one side and it produced major side spin, would the personalization do the same?

I use Kirkland. And love them.
Play em all the time and then switch to new for competitions. Been doing this for nearly 15yrs. My findings don't match these. Guess I've gotten luckier with quality. 275-285 off tee all day with either kind. Irons I do account and club down fractionally.
I'll keep this up realizing there is a difference and keep enjoying the savings season over season.
But I do like the MGS studies. Not disagreeing. Just haven't found it to add up to enough difference to justify the cost difference.
I use pond balls all the time. I don't see a problem but I always inspect them first.
Interesting but if I know I'm going to lose a few yards why not buy them and go up a club when playing a shot? Except for the driver, of course. What I would be very interested in is if you lose accuracy with the refurbished balls due to the refurbishment covering up or introducing imperfections. It's all very well losing 8 yards in distance but ending up 8 yards in the rough can be much more punishing.
In over 20 years of golfing I've never purchased refurbished golf balls. My Dad used to love them. I would rather buy a cheaper new ball like a Callaway Super Soft than a refurbished Titleist.
I think they are ok for a shag bag, but never ever would I play them. I bought a dozen Titleist reloads at Target and half of them had visible scuffs and one even had a cactus needle stuck in it.
Love the box of chocolate comparison. I've played them when found on casual rounds or short Par 3 courses. Though I'll never buy them. NEVER.

I used refurbished pro v's... not much difference. I did notice the cover would get chewed up after a few wedge shots. Other than that, couldn't tell any difference in performance.
I have found some refurbs in the woods and creeks......I'll bet he'd really pan a recycled refurb
What was the effect on spin from the extra layer of paint on the refurbs? It sucks to lose yards but if you can’t hold a green (if you can hit one) then why buy the refurbs???
I had good luck with Bridgestone refurbished balls.
I buy them all the time. I have been golfing for just under a year and for me to spend $75 on a dozen balls is crazy. I would probably have to give up a few rounds a year to be able to buy Pro V1.

Play Snell/Kirkland/vice, great balls but not nearly as expensive as pro V's. I played all of those before I moved up to the srixon z star recently
