Truck Camping in a Rainstorm / Campfire Cooking in Heavy Rain

  • This was my first Boondocking trip of 2023! The weather is finally getting nice, and the roads are open in the Chippewa National Forest. I knew going into the weekend that a rainstorm would be passing through, but I didn't expect it to last as long as it did. By Sunday morning I was worried that I wasn't going to make it out of the forest. My fears almost came true when I took the shoulder to avoid a downed tree. My rear driver tire sunk into the mud and I was being sucked into ditch. Thankfully the truck camper held course and made it out of the forest to camp another day. I want to thank everyone who takes the time to follow along on my weekend adventures. I appreciate you! I'll see you again next week.

    In winter I prefer to drain the water lines, then keep a little heat going in the camper during cold snaps. Usually about 50-55 will do.
    I really hate to let it freeze solid overnight, then the sun pop up on it in the morning. I also keep 4 bottles of gas... never want to run out.

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  6 месяцев назад

      I hear you. That would be nice. In Minnesota, we have cold snaps where the high temps reach -20 and lows -45. It's an expensive task to keep heat on. When I go camping in those cold snaps, I go through a 20-pound tank of propane every day. Thankfully, we have had a mild winter . I only have a few videos of it being 20 to 30 degrees below this year.

      I've had a few strange experiences in the north woods. Recently, near Hill City and Northome. First, I had two small pebbles thrown at me while walking through a field. I just finished flying the drone, so I know I was completely alone. Another time, I heard two whooping calls that I've never heard before. It wasn't loud. Instead, It was a super low frequency that made my insides vibrate. They were both strange experiences. I've lived up here my entire life and have been exploring these forests ever since I could drive a four-wheeler. I've never felt uncomfortable in the woods, even when unexplainable things happen. Now, walking through Walmart, I've seen and experienced situations that made me uncomfortable. Lol

      Or, I'll be honest, I'm a forgetful person. Sometimes, I get home from work on Friday night, and I jump into the camper so I can start the video right away. (I'm always pressed for time) I have driven 3 hours before realizing I left the laptop and camera at home. I'm sure the long-time viewers can attest that I'm not a professional outdoorsman, sportsman, RV channel, or RUclipsr. @@KennyOfAllTrades Way to go, Kenny! I thought you were looking slim and trim! I'm doing alternate day fasting along with Keto, staying under 20 carbs on eating days. Like you, I eat a lot of meat, cheese, etc., and veggies, too, lost 25 pounds in two months and I'm definitely older than you. I'm going to have to go back through your earlier videos and search out those Mandi keto recipes that looked so wonderful!

    Great video Kenny! Need to get a Mopeka LP tank sensor. You won’t go empty again, unless you forget to check. That is why I made a checklist for when I leave the house, I have one for leaving an overnight Campground and I have one for coming back home for the last time. Though that will change in 6 yrs when I retire. I will go full time, no wife in tow, just visits. I have those same problems with beavers, just not the same context I am sure. LOL!

      😆 I'll definitely look into the sensors. I'm on the same retirement plan as you. I got 7 years before I could pull off of the pension. Until then, I live for the weekends. After two years of camping every weekend, you would think i wouldn't be forgetting the small things. Maybe this RUclips channel will take off, and I won't keep this crazy schedule. I don't know if I can do 7 more years of working a Monday through Friday Job and recording a travel video every weekend. My plan is to live in the camper full-time as well. Thanks for watching Todd.

    Do you have a portable power station? (I thought you had shown us one you had trialed before, but maybe I’m confusing you with another vlog I follow, in which case I apologize.) You noted you were running low on propane. If I recall you have a good sized inverter, wasn’t it like a 3,000W? Could you have used the generator (or maybe one of those portable power stations) to run some electric appliances intermittently… to have helped with the being short on propane situation? Our AF990 has the option to run the fridge off 12v, shorepower, or propane. Does yours also have a 3 way fridge? Just thinking of how you might have been able to stretch your propane out a bit….

      All great questions. I received a power station in the mail a month ago. I've been using it since, but I have not mentioned the name in the videos. I'll do a special camping gear review video once I know the product works well. I do have a three thousand watt converter. It is powered off my truck's alternators. I also have the predator generator up front. In a pinch, I could have used those. Thanks for watching!

    Just to let you know I drilled a hole in the top cover on my happyjacks and I have a rubber plug for them and I squeeze Lucas oil stabilizer Dino type not synthetic it’s to thin. But just squeeze some in and run your jacks back up and gear box and that line screw and it oils everything. People always say that it’s so sealed it won’t you lift screws and put a paper plate under each leg and it will have some oil so that tells be it greases gear box and leg screws. Just a thing I learned when I took them all apart to clean and lube when I first got it second hand because when the guy I bought it from thinks duck tape can fix it all what a joke .

      Very good question. Life is full of uncertainty. I wish I could give you perfect advice, but there are so many variables with every situation. I don't worry about what might happen, but i do think about it. It's good to prepare yourself. And if something does happen, I am positive I will come out on top. You can help prepare yourself for different situations by running through sceneries in your head. Then do some drills, see how fast you can get on the road if needed. Look around your camper or van to see what is readily available to defend yourself with. And don't put yourself in sticky situations. If you get somewhere and it doesn't feel right, you should probably leave. Listen to your spidy sences when they tell you something dont feel right.

One nice thing is that the viewers get to see the changes in the seasons as they happen. I've been out in blizzards, -45 degrees temperatures, and summer heat waves. I wish I had more time to make the videos and o wish RUclips didn't put such an emphasis on consistent uploads.

      @KennyOfAllTrades  Год назад

      Thank you! I watch a lot of RUclips as well. I have definitely noticed what you are talking about. I think traveling has become harder in the last few years. A lot of public lands are getting closed down from overuse and garbage left behind. The National Parks have banned all recording without a costly application and permit process. The cost of owning a van or RV has surpassed the cost of renting a hotel room for a road trip. A lot of the RV channels I used to watch are now living in off grid properties. Because free life on the open road is not as easy as it was even 5 or 6 years ago. RUclips has also changed how they share the money from advertising. It's hard to make a full-time living on RUclips without Patron, RUclips Store affiliate links, Amazon affiliate, and sponsorship from big companies. That's why 99% of RUclipsrs are doing integrated commercials in their videos. The game has changed.
      Thankfully for me I still have a full-time job. (although I hate it) Getting in the woods on Saturdays and Sundays is the only thing keeping me from turning into a soulless working drone. Don't get me wrong, I have BIG dreams of quitting my job and doing RUclips full-time. I have a hard time asking people to support the channel. That's why, after two years, I still don't have Patron. I've never included an affiliate link in any of my videos. I don't have a PO Box for viewers to send me stuff. I've never asked for any to like or subscribe to the channel. I'm a horrible salesman.
      Sorry for venting.....I had a crap day at work.

    Great video! Since you keep the generator out front, why not keep and electric heater as a back up, or one of those small self contained propane fueled heaters? Just enough to get the chill off could make a nice difference inside. I could see a setup like yours in my future.
