Songwriting contests are very popular in the music industry, and they attract many budding songwriters because they often have high-profile judges and prize packages that sound lucrative. But, most of them charge an admission fee. Is it worth the cost, time, and hassle to enter these contests? Do they really work to help launch songwriting careers? In this video, Logan explains his thoughts about songwriting contests and whether or not they are a good idea to pursue and try to win.

Oh, and I did several contests including the John Lennon one. I never won anything and felt they were mostly money grabs. The one I got something out of was The Great American Songwriting Contest. Didn’t win anything but they at least send you a review of your song based on specific criteria for a good song. To me, their comments seemed spot on. I don’t do contests anymore because I’m a relic and not marketable but for younger writers it will be helpful to know exactly why you weren’t selected and what to work on for future songs. Just my experience and opinion, of course.

Everyone thinks their songs are good. I did, too. Like you said, it’s all subjective. I was fortunate enough to have Brad Davis (guitarist for Marty Stuart, Boxmasters etc.) mix/master/coach me on an indie cd. I was excited about one particular song and was telling him I thought it had legs. He was very kind but he told me this story: When he was starting out in Nashville he expressed the same thing about one of his songs to a well known producer. The producer smiled and said “son, if you wear your songs on your sleeve like that, you’ll never make it in this business.”
Obviously, his point was that it doesn’t matter what you think of your own songs. I’ll never forget that.
When the cd was finished and released, his advice proved out. The song I thought was the most lame and cliched was the one that people overwhelmingly liked the best. I’m not a pro so I still write songs based on what I like but anyone who is pursuing a career would do well to consider that and not get hurt if your favorite tune doesn’t resonate with others.

For me yes I've been 2x on a remix competition and once in a songwriting contest. I got to finals in JLSC. So with 30$ buy in 1000$ worth of prizes to me certainly was worth it. It's my song Love Lost wich got to finals.

What is the best way to get my songs to a publisher?
Perhaps try working as a staff writer at a music publishing firm? That way, you can build some rapport there while also being able to get your songs out there because the publisher can link you up with their wide network of contacts including artists, producers, TV shows, commercials, the list goes on.

No. It's where your creativeness gets stolen. Contest's exist to harvest the naive.
How high is the chance to be a successfully international songwriter, when you are from Switzerland?
Location isn’t as much an issue anymore. Also, the definition of successful can mean a ton of different things too. If Success means making a living writing music then yes there are plenty of opportunities to do that from anywhere in the world.

I don't think a commitee should decide whether my song is good or not.... it can be really demotivating... but on the other hand, some constructive critics can do good :)
It seems like it's the people who win are already in the industry and know people. The idea that it finds unknown songwriters with amazing talent is wrong.

Contests? Say what?
No is the answer. Actually it's fuck no. Same with band competitions. What you need to do with these kind of things is to second-guess other peoples preferences and then change your style to fit what you think they will like. At that point, you've lost your artistic integrity, all for a few bucks. And at the same time, you'll probably misjudge what other people are looking for anyway. It's a lose-lose. Stay well away.
