  • We recently returned from our latest adventure to South Korea and have plenty to share!
Welcome to Gyeongju, a city on the southeastern coast of South Korea, popularly known for its historic landmarks that date back to 900 AD, a time when the ancient Silla kingdom ruled the area. Gyeongju boasts a beautiful landscape, charming architecture, and a rich Korean history where more is still to be discovered to this day through ongoing excavation projects. Join us as we discover the top 10 attractions and sites in Gyeongju, as well as three optional places, where you’ll learn lots about Korean history and be able to step back in time.
    Top 10 places to see:
    1. Daereungwon Tomb Complex
    2. Cheomseongdae Observatory
    3. Gyeongju Historical Site
    4. Local Confucian School and Traditional Hanok Village
    5. Woljeonggyo Bridge
    6. Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond
    7. The Gyeongju National Museum
    8. Bulguksa Temple
    9. Bunhwangsa Temple and Hwangnyongsa Shrine District
    10. Hwangridan-gil Trendy Strip
Three other places that might be of interest to you, which we didn’t have time to make it to are:
    1. Gyeongju East Palace Garden & Bomun Tourist Complex - This is the area around Bomun Lake and is a little outside of the main part of Gyeongju, which you can get to by bus. If you’ve seen the classic cherry blossom tree pictures in the spring, this is the place. We went in the beginning of March which wasn’t quite the right season so we skipped this area all together. There are also a lot of resorts, malls and even an amusement park built around this lake so this is a warning that it can get a bit touristy.
    2. Poseokjeong Pavillion - This is a site of remains from the Silla era where there was once a royal pavilion. The site is a bit south of the main Gyeongju area, so we didn’t go there due to timing.
    3. Seokguram Grotto - This is a place we really wish we would have had time to visit. Located in close proximity to the Bulguksa Temple, this site is a Hermitage which is a religious retreat site. It overlooks the Sea of Japan and is just a bit further than the Bulguksa Temple by bus. If you have a bit more time than we did, make sure to check this place out. We were sad that we didn’t have time.
