I would have been a goddess back in certain times with my thicc thighs and pale skin! Great video, hilarious and educational! I knew about the drops of bella donna in the eyes, white lead make up, and the use of egg white to "tighten" skin but I'm sure there are many more deadly and nasty techniques that were employed by the nobles and such. I also heard about a ragged-edged spoon/tool that was used to scrape off the top layers of skin for rejuvenation? Hello infection, welcome to mah face!
Other recipes of lipstick and blush were healthier, but one of them was gross. The ingredients of one recipe were: dried poppy petals turned into powder and a little bit of cooking oil; you mixed them together and you had a red paste to use as a lipstick and/or blush. The second recipe also has oil as an ingredient, but the other was dead dried cochineal (a bright red insect) turned into powder. The process was the same: you mixed the ingredients to get a bright red paste. Agnes Sorel (1422-1450), the drop-dead beautiful mistress of French King Charles VII, used powder from dried poppy leaves to dab her lips with, and she moistened it with her tongue to colour her lips.
Belladonna is also known as night shade (?) and it's in the poison garden in Alnwick Gardens in Northumberland (would recommend visiting sometime, I was there in March just before lock down and it was oddly quiet). It's a pretty plant but honestly not worth beauty for. I have bad eyes and the thought of someone willingly messing with them makes me ill.
Another French king mistress, Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566), who was also drop-dead beautiful, used to drink a potion with melted gold in it. She died partly because of gold poisoning (as gold is a heavy metal as well!).
I’m an RN and I’ve cared for patients who have ingested Bella Donna. They’d make a mixture of a flower containing Bella Donna and kool-aid. It would cause severe hallucinations, violent behaviors and heart arrhythmias. And yes...it can absolutely kill you.
