  • Well, it was requested so here it is! This is the Porter Yoshida Tanker Daypack in the “flesh”.. It’s a bit of a mysterious bag in the land of Bagnerdia but one that is very much real! In this video, I take a bit of a dive into the bag, show its features, talk about why you probably shouldn’t buy it and about why I LOVE IT!
As always, if you have any questions, shoot me a comment, email, or Instagram DM!

Not Porter Yoshida. The brand is called Porter, the maker is called Yoshida Kaban. The collection is Tanker :)

Awesome review, apt title! Tanker pieces are indeed beasts.
I've had the pleasure of owning a handful of Porter items over the years, all purchased in Japan. Your review is spot-in in that those YKK zippers get better over the months/years, as do the fabrics. I've had a Tanker black & orange messenger bag for nearly 20 years and it looks and wears like the day I bought it, except it's now even shinier. Porter design is kind of unapologetic w/r/t lack of pockets, no dedicated laptop sleeves, etc. But the build & material quality are simply insane. Every moment over the decades you use a Porter item is sheer bliss.
BTW with how cheap the yen is right now, it's a great time to purchase Porter! I just grabbed a Tanker long wallet for less than 100 USD.

nice review.. I own Porter "Things" series backpack that have dedicated laptop compartment. Its a solid construction, very good quality. One cons this is not the pack that you can throw and toss like goruck, tad, etc. The fabric they use (balistic soft touch feel, idk what is that) is a very prone to scratch, so you need to treat it with careful, and for the person that doesnt like maintenance like me, its a drawback.

I think this really depends on which Porter you have. They have so many product lines with different materials so it really makes a difference which you mean. I have a Porter sling from the Tanker series that's 15 years old and been tossed around more than any TAD or Goruck bag I own and still looks like new ;)

Porter design session: Ok, so should we use these amazing materials for apparel or a bag?
    Porter business: *Yes.*
Interesting bag. I like how you think through your accessories too. Would love it if you linked to the other gear in the video description but it’s all good.
The Grey Ghost Gear insert is interesting. I use a Cargo Works Admin Pouch Pro mounted to the inside of my GR1 MOLLE but I like how modular your GGG is. I’d probably use the Greyman Tactical rigid MOLLE panel which I have GR1 padded pocket, Zulu Nylon Gear Mega Admin Pouch, and ITS Tactical Tallboy IFAK.
I don’t think this bag is for me as I’m more about function than form. The Porter bag seems to be more of an exhibition bag than a do-all bag to me but to each their own.

Great comment. The Porter is a bit of a weird bag. Weird in a good way but still weird. I think it feels more useable in person than it looks in a video like this. It's definitely big for my daily carry and I think the zippers for sure would drive most people mad before they had a chance to actually like the bag. I will definitely try and link the other gear in the description! Pure laziness, ha.
The GGG insert looks cool. I find myself liking tactical style stuff a little more for organization these days. One of my favourite daily carry bags is the DA Dust and I tend to miss that bag more than others when using other bags for these videos.
The Porter is definitely functional, just, it takes time to get there and definitely kind of forces your hand to set up your daily in a certain way. My most used bags tend to be the GR1 / RF Chief for daily carry stuff and they feel less cumbersome in use, for sure. One thing that drives me nuts about the Porter is I can't unzip the main compartment with one hand from my drivers seat if I have to grab my wallet or something. I will say, it's great for minimal travel and think it shines most there.
One pouch I'm really eyeing these days is the Helikon Tex Urban Admin Pouch for my GR1s. Havent' gotten one yet but have been close during the last couple sessions of retail therapy ;)

Thinking of buying one these as my everyday work backpack. Could anybody tell me whether you can fit an 16inch macbook pro in the main compartment? Also great video, really good overview. It's a lovely looking backpack.

Tried these on constantly while i was in Japan. Agree on the touchable material. It's luxurious feel and they're just well made.
but Porter bags in actual use feel a bit...finicky? so i didn't get one in the end and went with an AS2OV in similar price range.

    • @jtinseoul7041
      @jtinseoul7041  3 года назад +2

I think the AS2OV is a great choice, too. I don't really find the Porter that finicky anymore but a lot of that might be to do with the fact I tend to forgive a lot of its.. quirks because it just looks and feels so nice.

No worries, I've been back and forth on this a lot. You aren't the only one! It's a bit of laziness as well. The current setup I have only really allows for this angle so I could flip it in post but it looks awkward because it's like not exactly point of view. Anyway, I'll keep on improving ;)
