I follow uk politics from time to time. Comparing it to irish politics and i liked tony benn. We need people like that over here we have nothing but a bunch of deadbeats.
Your voted wouldn’t have done nothing, people like tony will never become pm because it goes against everything the real bosses of this world stand for.
Mr Moore left out possibly the most important part of his life history, he had a hereditary peerage, a vast inheritance but wasn't allowed to be an mp because of this. he renounced his claim and gave up a life of ease to stand up for the disenfranchised. the last true hero of politics in our country.
Oswald Mosley done the same. Yes he became a fascist, but he was a great labour mp before that. An aristocrat like Tony benn who stood up for the working class and led many strikes. Both were heroes even if they became polar opposites.
I see a man with passion for the people, not by the people! A real man with a passion for the pursuit of happiness!!! May the heavens bless you, your family, and your country.
I wish we had politicians in the U.S. like him. Perhaps we do but their words are drowned out by those bought off by the corporations. I love his comment in another interview with Michael Moore where he says that government does not want a healthy, well educated contituency. He adds with a chuckle that it would be too hard to control. With the U.S. being 39th in the performance of our health care system and seriously lagging in education, the U.S. Government has nothing to worry about.
You've really got to hand it to Benn. He says what he believes, sticks to his guns, comes through on promises and never towed the party line if he didn't believe it. Doesn't matter what you think of his policies, but you have to give him respect for showing more honesty than the current upper and lower houses combined.
brilliant man, what a shame the uk doesn't have more voices like him in politics and that there is no strong left in the country, just two parties tories and labor which are idenitical twins, and there in lies a system to tough to break.
It is a shame that there are no politicians with the same sense of just, moral conviction that would stand by those principles over popularity. A British institution he is and no mistake!
@theporksicle My father and grandfather told me of those times. They worked hard and were poor, they basically got little health care. Hence my grandfather was the only one of his siblings to survive infancy. I would fight for the NHS, but not the capitalist establishment that runs this country and would like to sell it off.
what you do is everone in a hospital catchment areas have equal shares. that means they can control how much profit they want to get out of it versus quality of care. those shares would belong to every abode in the catchment area, so if you move to a new town, the people who move into your house gets your old shares, and the new house you move into, you get the previous ocupiers shares in the local hospital.
mbb05jb I've worked in both the nationalised and private sectors. I would say that efficiency-wise there was little to choose. Accountability-wise, there was a great deal of difference.
I could turn that argument on its head, why should I pay for a war for which I am not in agreement? Or for the transport links that I don't use but are essential to multi-nationals to run a profitable business? But I won't because the answer is simple we are all individuals but we are all inter-dependent .
In 1963 the law was changed by the Peerage Act to permit hereditary peers to disclaim their peerages for life. This was notably used by a number of peers who wished to become members of the British House of Commons, including the Viscount Stansgate (Tony Benn), Benn was a Lord but gave it up!
The linguistics of the word 'customer' are interesting, I agree with him. I suppose the argument in favour of calling people on trains customers not passengers is that they have paid to be on there, a fare dodger is still a passenger but not a customer.
If Michael Moore wants to increase public funded health, he should promote laws the improve health: 1. Ban soda machines from schools. 2. Allow local authorities to tax junk food. 3. Add PE to the NCLB act. 4. Ban child-targeted advertisement.
A state can avoid being controlled by big money. Take Vermont as an example; their governors have voted no to megaprojects, huge buildings, federal prisons, large dumps, etc.
Things u state r not what he is talking about on here. Y not engage with his position n take 1 of your own. Personally I think he makes some very cogent arguments. I witnessed the man get overcome when reciting a famous quote from a freedom fighter ''our revenge will be the laughter of our children''. rather akin 2 bertrand russells 'we must care for a world we will not see' :-)
It's not a case of us having to adapt, it's a case of the mantra "Free-market good, socialised bad" that most of our politicians bleat these days. Each is good in it's proper place. If I want to purchase a pair of socks or a motor car then the free market is the place to do it. When it comes to the basics, there has to be social provision plus the free market. When it comes to life or death, then it's a duty for all of us. By life or death I mean, health, law, defence, emergency services et
@TheAntinode Are you saying that after WWii or indeed after ww1 those millions of working class people who had to fight should have just quietly gone back to their slums until the next time they where needed for cannon fodder?
@massiveants I don't think he's talking about religious beliefs in general or that he's preaching about Jesus and Christianity. He's talking about Jesus as an inspirational figure and a symbol for goodwill to all mankind.
The war of independence was justified; there is no justification to pay taxes to a government over which you have no control. The point I make is that many good things have been achieved with social action. The NHS was born because people noticed how well we did things during the war when we did things together, they did not want to go back to the way things were and they felt they had earned it, UHC here is as non-controversial as watching a ball game. Even Thatcher dared not touch it.
@basch2020 That's one way to look at it, but if I interpret Marx's works correctly...he envisioned what he called "pure communism," in which the government, and in essence the state itself disappeared entirely. Either way, Tony Benn is a true socialist. It would be nice to see more like him.
The "State" known in democratic countries as "the people" choose by democratic means to make laws and by default law enforcement. Trying to ensure that they "the people" are individually free as possible try to balance those freedoms with the need to ensure civilised norms for ALL citizens. For those who cannot or will not except those "civilised norms" and refuse to except their responsibilities to society they are free to leave they are not forced to stay. They are not forced to do anything.
@massiveants You have to look at history, Benn does. He is a spiritual man and his political beliefs spring from it. However, he is also a keen on history, especially political history, his writing drips with it. He is one of a long line of socialists in this country that can be dated back not just to the non-conformists of the 19th century but even back to the revolution of the 17th century. They sprang from their interpretation of the New Testament.
@mgore90 if we didnt pay, they wouldnt be manipulated by the government, and there is no reason they should be manipulated by the people.. the other channels certainly arent.. personally i think that it would make very little difference in terms of content if we didnt pay the fee.. the government we have today was not voted by anyone, not 1 person in the UK voted for a coalition government.
@supasye don't usually outright lie, as Sky News and ITN News do, if you can even call them news. And aside from the news, BBC 4 and Radio 4 are great, as are 'big budget' documentaries shown on One and Two, they wouldn't exist without the BBC. Having grown up in a working class family, where there's no ethos of learning and both my parents left school before 16. I have the BBC to thank for getting me interested in the pursuit of knowledge for it own sake and for being at university.
"Everyone would love to employ someone in £70,000 of debt because they won't cause any trouble" class!
Well I have caused a lot of trouble and I still have a job hehe
I've seen this extra more times than Sicko itself. It made so much sense, and I became a Socialist because of Tony. This man made me understand.
I could listen to Benn all day.

+kenny rushby He had a great mind god I miss him RIP Tony XXX
We have lost a great champion of socialism, democracy and an advocate of dignity for ordinary people.
I follow uk politics from time to time. Comparing it to irish politics and i liked tony benn. We need people like that over here we have nothing but a bunch of deadbeats.
I wish I could have voted for Tony Benn!!! RIP the most amazing man!! Politics really needs people who are like this today!!!!
Your voted wouldn’t have done nothing, people like tony will never become pm because it goes against everything the real bosses of this world stand for.

Tony had such a lovely voice
This is a man of profound integrity. His intelligence & persuasive arguments blows-away the morally challenged.
An admirable man, representing the true spirit of old Labour.
he retired from parliament so he could focus more on politics lol that really made me laugh :)
I wish we had politicians in the U.S. like him. Perhaps we do but their words are drowned out by those bought off by the corporations. I love his comment in another interview with Michael Moore where he says that government does not want a healthy, well educated contituency. I would die for the NHS before I died for my country
Tony Benn! Thankyou for your righteous perspectives! Xoxo
You've really got to hand it to Benn. He says what he believes, sticks to his guns, comes through on promises and never towed the party line if he didn't believe it.
Doesn't matter what you think of his policies, but you have to give him respect for showing more honesty than the current upper and lower houses combined.
RIP Tony Benn. You will be missed.
George Galloway was right when he said to Tony Benn "Your the best prime minister England never had" haha!

My recommendation, not that anyone asked for it, is to play Brian Eno's 'An Ending (Ascent)' whilst watching this.

Tony Benn IS a good man, he is still alive....
@theporksicle My father and grandfather told me of those times. They worked hard and were poor, they basically got little health care. @CoreyTowson , he is the best prime minister we never had
Tony: "The government should fear the people. The people should not fear the government".
EVERY so called "leader" in this world should listen to this clip.
Tony Benn is my candidate for President of the Planet Earth . . . too bad he's too old for the rigors of the job!!!
dead now I think
the man is still sharp !
a political giant, compare todays labour party, its a shadow of its former self
we need this guy as adviser to our government.. we would be alot better off
I've never thought I could see Jesus in a non-religious way. Incredible.
American's can keep their M16's and SUV's and we'll keep our NHS and BBC!

@TheTrav1985
person first, party second. he was a member before it all became the corporate evil it is today!
Wow! Why aren't political views like this more wide spread? (Seems so obvious when practically explained like this)
The linguistics of the word 'customer' are interesting, I agree with him. I suppose the argument in favour of calling people on trains customers not passengers is that they have paid to be on there, a fare dodger is still a passenger but not a customer.
I would not trust an insurance company to mend a bump in my car, let alone rely on them to pay for life-saving treatment for my son.
Fair comment! But WHO exactly IS running this country right now? Answers on a postcard, please.
If Michael Moore wants to increase public funded health, he should promote laws the improve health:

Labour: for the many, not the few.
Were are the LABOUR mp`s like Tony all imposed on constituencies by Central office. They don`t ROCK THE BOAT except expenses.
It's not banging your head against a brick wall. If your work for socialism helps just a single person from falling into poverty, it was worth it.
It's not a case of us having to adapt, it's a case of the mantra "Free-market good, socialised bad" that most of our politicians bleat these days. Each is good in it's proper place. @massiveants

It’s a movie called Sicko by Michael Moore
